My sister-in-law found this hotel through Condé Nast or the like and wanted to go enough that we…read moredecided on Cornwall instead of Wales for our weekend in the UK with her. The hotel is old and classic, but modernized enough to be thoroughly comfortable. We got a room facing the pitch and putt out front, complete with double bed and built in bunks through a travel website for the last weekend in August. The room was large and well-appointed with comfortable beds and crisp linens. The sink taps were separate for hot and cold, and the shower either ran borderline-burning hot or cold. There was very little air flow in the room unless the window was open. The hotel was classically decorated. I loved the "library" on the 1st floor with its book wallpaper, LEGO model of the hotel, and modern dog lounger. There's a large double stair case, with seating at each level, much needed since the elevator isn't terribly fast. The lounge area, which we were told used to be the ballroom, had a seating area at each window to enjoy the views. There was a patio outside with a glass windbreak for the same purpose. There's a spa area downstairs, and there's a booklet full of treatments available. We didn't try to book any, but we did enjoy the pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and aromatherapy showers. While in the sauna, another guest informed us that they were booked for 48 hours solid anyway. Just having access to the aromatherapy showers was a lovely treat after a day of hiking in the coastal air. We ate our evening meals in the lounge area, not having seating at the Terrace (the casual restaurant), not having brought proper dress for the formal dining room, and enjoying the comfy chairs and couches. The full Terrace menu was available. The first night we quite enjoyed the mussels, rocket salad, fresh herbed mozzarella balls, the soup of the day, and the 5 Super Food salad (which changes daily, but always features 5 super foods, so you get the key nutrients in one sitting). Everything was tasty, especially that salad. The second evening, we split the vegetarian platter and the small version of the super food salad. We were quite full the second evening from enjoying cheese and crackers (which we bought at the Sainsbury's in town) while watching the sunset from one of the brick alcoves built into the seaside hill below the hotel. There about 2 dozen alcoves of brick or stone built along the side facing the beach or the coast, though only a couple had chairs. I would think they would've been quite crowded at a different point in the season, since they afforded such lovely views and provided just enough a windbreak. They're incredibly dog friendly and kid friendly. There were dogs and kids running around everywhere the whole weekend. Many folks brought their dogs and kids into the lounge area while they dined. Obviously, you go for the views, but the hotel was a lovely enough experience on its own to make it worth the trip.

Sorry - the hotel was great in many ways. The breakfast buffet was fantastic, the beds were…read morecomfortable and overall the service was pretty good. The views were great. However, the shower cannot keep one temperature - complaints among three rooms that my family members were in. That is ridiculous - its 2012 and we are in a developed country. At midnight the alarm on my clock went off. Again, the room maid should be checking that during every cleaning between guests to make sure that doesn't happen. I asked someone to come up in fix it. They sent someone up who hadn't touched one before and was new. After three or four minutes I asked him if he knew what he was doing and he said he didn't ......... I asked him to leave and just unplugged it. My cousin had her wedding here and it went perfectly. I would give it five stars on that.

The Scarlet hotel claims to be a place of Serenity and Calm; well that certainly hasn't been my…read morerecent customer service experience!! I would recommend if you or any member of your family are suffering from an advanced/ terminal CANCER diagnosis or any other serious illness , then DO NOT think about booking this hotel! I purchased a spa voucher costing £250 for my parents as a Christmas present which they went ahead and booked a room for the night in June 2025 total payment of £474 (deposit £250) to accompany their spa present. In April of this year my dad got diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer ( now terminal) which he has now just begun chemotherapy, making him extremely immunocomprimised and therefore unable to go for his visit to the Scarlet. He has already been so sick much to the distress of us all as any family having gone through this would understand. I then decided to call the hotel to discuss the situation to be told : A) I would have to pay an extenstion for the voucher if it was not used by June B) After talking to one of the collagues at the Scarlet for 20-25 minutes , her going back three times to her Manager to discuss the circumstances and telling me : 1) I couldn't deal with the room booking as it was my sick dad that had made the booking and therefore he would have to email them to authorize permission for me to deal with the booking 2) When he made the booking he was informed that the booking wasn't refundable and it wouldn't be company policy to be able to do a refund in any circumstance for the 50 % deposit that is being held by the hotel and that if they wanted to reschedule the visit of their stay ot would have to be done within the next 6 months, despite having informed them that my dad has to go through 6 sessions of chemotherapy every 3 weeks for the next 6 months... and who knows at this point whether he'll even be alive after this time never mind going to a spa when this 'future booking needs to be made!' So in total that is currently £500 that the hotel has and they want me to pay further for an extension for the voucher!! This has been a truly distressing and disgraceful experience with the Scarlet hotel clearly having absolutely NO consideration for what families/ people might be going through at such an extremely difficult time, all for the interest of making financial profit , it really is TRULY saddening :-(

The hotel 'investigated' but concluded it wasn't their fault as no one else reported being sick. They have offered zero compensation. We pointed out it would only take one person to have touched something and not washed their hands for only us to be sick but they said as they couldn't check if this had happened they would not compensate for it. The food in general was not of the quality I would expect from a hotel of this standard. We had a hot tub booking and Rhassoul spa experience both of which started well after the prebooked time. No one let us know they were running late or offered any apology. Beautiful location but recommend you stay elsewhere.

Old Custom House Hotel & Pescadou - Bar area.

Old Custom House Hotel & Pescadou

The Old Custom House is a large, attractive pub & restaurant in Padstow Harbour, part of a chain…read moreand affiliated (as so many in the area) with St. Austell Brewery. The historic building is in perfect shape, and the décor inviting and family-friendly. There are two areas, one close to the bar and a room mostly for dining at the back. Sadly, it offered no dedicated seating in front of the building, which is a shame considering the splendid view. The menu is straightforward and streamlined; during my week in Cornwall I've encountered the very same menu at least five times, at pubs in Padstow, St. Ives and Falmouth. On the upside, you know what you'll get. My pick at The Old Custom House was their rump steak with chips, onion rings, a flat mushroom, and tomato. You can add a prawn skewer for UKP 4, which I did and later regretted, it's not worth the "upgrade". The steak itself arrived medium rare as ordered: average quality meat but decently prepared. Okay for the price. The range of real ales and lagers was good, of course there's a focus on St. Austell ales. I tried different beers and they were all fresh and well-kept. The bar staff were reasonably friendly, but seemed in quite a hurry - not surprising considering the fact that Padstow is a touristy place and that the pub was nearly packed during (late) lunchtime. Queues at the bar (there is a separate till for ordering food) can get longer, and longer. The dish itself arrived within reasonable time. As expected, beer prices are rather elevated at such a place, so expect more than UKP 4 for a pint. All in all it's one of the best options though along the Padstow "harbour front".

The minute that we all arrived numerous staff were on hand to take our coats and ensure that the table area was to our liking, from there our waiter somehow managed to be exceptional and not get a single thing wrong the whole night. Drinks were prompt, food was outstanding and we never had dirty plates or empty cups for long. The seafood pot in the creamy mustard sauce (name fails me now..) was AMAZING, definitely the best meal I have ever had. To top that off there was a Thai mussels starter that was out of this world. A few gentleman at the table had steaks and they were cooked to perfection which is sometimes hit or miss at seafood restaurants. Needless to say, this was perfect for our very special occasion and despite being a bit loud, the staff was very gracious and the surrounding parties were also kind and understanding, one of which sent us over drinks. Such a great experience and I recommend to anyone in Padstow looking for a high class dining experience. Our waiter was from Canada of all places and was OUTSTANDING, so if you get him, you are in very good hands.

They are very accommodating. They don't normally serve lunch and when we arrived we were hungry. They suggested to go the Mermaid Inn that was still serving lunch. We were offered dinner for £15 per person. We decided to have dinner out. We forgot towels for the beach. I asked reception and they loaned us one, it saved us money from having to go out and buy towels. The rooms were always cleaned, towels we replaced. Bed was comfortable. I requested a room with an ocean view and we were given one of the best views in the hotel, it might have been the best. If you leave your windows open at night you can hear the waves crash, it is very calm and relaxing to go to sleep too. An ocean breeze to cool your room is always nice. Breakfast is a tradition English break fast, it is included with the price of the room. Breakfast was nice, sausages cooked to perfection, egg wasn't over cooked and the bacon was nice. The only downer is I found a large hair in my mushrooms, I didn't complain, I didn't want to embarrass the owners, so I quietly took it out and just didn't eat my mushrooms. I noticed the hair came off of the cook because I saw him entering the hotel wearing an apron and the squiggly black hair came from his head. They provide nice tea, coffee and hot cocoa in the room and it is replaced with a new stock daily. Overall enjoyed my stay at the Kenton Hotel. Look forward to my next stay with them. Another plus is I booked by accident the wrong dates and through booking.com. I was told through booking.com that I was not able to get a refund, booking.com called the hotel and asked if they would refund me. They did refund me because I had just made the booking. I ended up re-booking with the correct dates. This is a fair hotel and I will make sure I give them my money next time I am in Cornwall.
