This review is just for the cafe - we didn't stay in this hotel's one and only room :)…read more It was on a very hot, stressful Sunday that we biked our way to Hotel Droog (pronounced Drog) to check out the store and cafe -- with a marathon on, the entire city was a mess of sweaty bicycle traffic jams. Inside the store (on the ground floor), it was quiet and air conditioned (ahhh, that's better). We headed upstairs to get a coffee and I felt instantly more relaxed. The space is open, clean and comforting, and of course dotted with their design classics like the Rag Chair, the Lounge of Layers, Slow Glow Lamp and House light. The windows were open, with views of the canal and there's that lovely bridge quite unlike the ones criss crossing the entire city's canals, complete with a few dozen love locks. Music was modern but chilled out, background noise that played a part without making itself known or trying too hard. Coffee was excellent and came with a small piece of cinnamon almond treat. They also serve cakes and salads and light lunch items. This is less hotel and more event space - with a large gallery space attached to the cafe, a "library" which is actually a private meeting room that can be booked and of course the single room available to stay in. The space also features a lovely central garden whimsically decorated with sculptures and mirrors for a subdued Alice in Wonderland effect. I can't overemphasize how just ... nice ... this visit was. Sort of effortlessly impressive and pleasant. If you love modern design and lovely chilled out spaces for conversation and coffee, this is your spot. It's wonderful, free museum of Dutch contemporary design and perfectly untouched by tourists. Some might call it a hidden gem ;)

To start with they charge "tourist tax regardless of where you're from or if you're in Rotterdam for work like I was. The photos are misleading, the rooms are sparse, outdated, uncomfortable with paper-thin windows that let all the noise in from the street. I know it's a hostel but in an area with a lot of nightlife, PLEASE get some better soundproofing. I never slept despite having earplugs in all night every night. It's made worse by a total lack of information and rules being enforced. Guests were bringing people in from the street at all hours to just fuck around and be loud throughout the building, and several of my roommates were on their phones through the night, and staff refused or ignored any attempts to get a quieter room or tell them to stfu. Cleanliness was awful, the showers look like something out of the gulag, and the fellow travellers, even for a cheap hostel, were so gross - one dude literally scratched his ass in the bed next to me, sniffed it, then wiped the brown on his sheet, and rolled over. WTF?! Seriously hoping for a refund on booking 26031 but I doubt they will acknowledge any negative feedback let alone fix it. Didn't try much of the food. It looked fine from what I saw others have but I had my own stuff.

I did not request the sick person leave; I just wanted to switch rooms. Instead, the owner\manager decided to tell me to leave the hostel rather than the sick person keeping people up and spreading sickness or let me move rooms like I requested. I was the only guest there over 40 and I have been to enough hostels to know this was an excuse to age discriminate. If they don't want people over 40; they should just be honest about it and post it.

She then took a plunger to the shower and managed to plunge out a huge black hairball looking thing. She was very apologetic. My disappointment comes from management not addressing this with us at all. I just felt like, as a company, they should have tried to do something to rectify the situation. "Organic, Padded-Cell Chic"…read more Just a short tram ride away from the train station, this clean and green hotel is the perfect answer for those who don't want to spend $300 a night, but who also don't want to stay in a hostel. Get directions to your room from the front desk as the hotel is a labyrinth. "Take the stairs, go down the hallway, ride the elevator to the third floor, jump down the rabbit hole, wiggle your way through the undergound passageway, step inside the time machine and see where it takes you." I think that's what we had to do to find our room. Don't let the narrow hallways and intimidating, black room doors fool you! It may look like you're about to enter a padded cell, and your room might actually be about the size of one, but it will be cute, comfortable, and modern inside. Take note that there are no hair dryers, and the lights only work if your room key card is inserted into the slot in the box on the wall when you first enter your room. For those not familiar with this practice, it is good to know before you get there (they don't tell you at the front desk). Make use of the friendly front desk staff--they are more than helpful and can provide you with maps and tips to navigate the city.

Either way, they certainly live up to their reputation for bougieness. We would've ordered an entire three course meal. However, we came here for one thing only- their charcuterie plate. Meats. Cheeses. Bread. That's all we really wanted, and it was fantastic. Their prosciutto was extremely tasty and the selection of cheeses to match were fab. We got a sense that the wait staff were a bit annoyed that we only ordered their €30 charcuterie board, but hey, they're known for such and I will attest that it was good. I have immense gratitude for that!! Because of that I was able to relax my mind and enjoy the remainder of my stay. The decor and overall aesthetic is amazing. It's located PERFECTLY between the canals, eateries, shops, etc. It's really an awesome central location for walking distance to practically anywhere in the area. I like to get out and explore on foot as much (or as less) as possible, and this hotel easily provided that luxury. My room was nice. I liked the sunken-in structure. I did not like the small television with static on every channel. There was no option to switch the language to english, but I'm not too bothered by that - I understand. Especially it being more 'boutique' than a chain hotel. The heat, while it worked, it took a very long time to get warmth in the room. There was no wall setting, only an actual radiator, which housekeeping had to show me how to properly and safely turn it on/off. I got the hang of it quickly. The bed was comfortable, not too fond of the bathroom, but I think that's more of a Europe thing. Eh. I would probably stay here again, but not in the same room. Amazing location!!!
