My wife and I vacationed here for our honeymoon, and we were absolutely thrilled with The Ryelands. Lyn is personable and very professional. She exudes a genuine concern and care for her guests. The rooms are fantastically comfortable, and extremely well situated within walking distance of "downtown" Grasmere. Our room, the Silver Howe, has a lovely view with an ever so faint glimpse of Grasmere Lake. The "negative" aspects of this property are actually what makes it wonderful as well. The flat screen television is VERY small with a limited channel selection, and is not easily visible while lying down on the bed (it should be mounted on the wall for better viewing). This is actually a positive, since one shouldn't expect to spend much time in the room, and time would be better spent reading Wordsworth than watching a rerun of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" The staircase leading up to the bedrooms is moderately steep and narrow--a daunting gauntlet for large suitcases or obese rear ends. And don't expect to wheel a suitcase or anything up the gravel driveway to the property. It makes a lovely crunching sound as you walk, but it's impossible to drag anything with wheels smaller than a moving dolly or hand truck. Still, the property is utterly gorgeous. The owners/operators are personable, helpful and inviting. Their breakfasts are delicious. The towels are surprisingly soft, and smell of soothing lavender. It's easy to get "caught up" in the romantic feel of Grasmere from The Ryelands. I HIGHLY recommend The Ryelands over ANY other property in Grasmere, including the famous Wordsworth Hotel. I would award The Ryelands a 5-star rating if: 1. The flat screen television was wall-mounted and maybe connected to a simple DVD player. It's a seemingly silly request, but it's what I would expect from a 5-star establishment. 2. Breakfast service ends slightly too early (around 9 or 10 AM). I would expect a 5-star establishment to provide a simple, continental breakfast option for guests who choose to dine after those hours. 3. The downstairs office uses a secured wireless internet connection, but no access is provided for guests. I would expect a 5-star establishment to provide or charge for in-room internet access. With the relatively low cost of wireless-N routers, I do not believe this to be an unreasonable request.

English breakfast was cooked to order every morning with no shortage of cereal, fruit and toast. Jill was accommodating even when we wanted to leave our bags in the hall on our check day. The rooms are tastefully decorated and has all the comforts you're likely to need. There is a TV/DVD in the room (plus the ability to hire out DVD's from an extensive list - free of charge!), tea/coffee making facilities and the ensuite shower is to a high standard. The shared lounge is comfortable and holds plenty of information regarding local things to see and do as well as local places to eat. Their breakfast range is wonderful and really did set us up for the day! They cater for special diets (i.e. Vegetarian) and are flexible with the breakfast choices. The B&B may be on a main road, but their triple glazing in the rooms mean you hear very little car noise. the views from the front and back are stunning. This was my first visit to the Lake District and Dunmail House and our stay there added to a wonderful experience. They are very walker friendly and you can access some wonderful walks from there. Ambleside, Keswick, Windermere, Coniston and Grizedale forest are all short drives away. Highly Recommended!

First off, beautiful facility, new, modern, yet tastefully fits into the neighborhood and expertly run by a young gentleman whose name I'm sad to say I didn't write down. Great wireless connection, comfortable lounging area. Here's the deal: you arrive at these places after walking for 6-8 hours so someone that says, "Here, your shoes look wet, let me put them in the back yard in direct sun so they dry out. I'll watch for rain (which it does frequently) and if it threatens I'll bring them in." Wow... score. Killer traditional English breakfast, a great packed lunch, friendly and professional staff. These are things you don't get in all of these small towns you pass through so a welcome stay. Chesnut Villa should be moving to the top of the list of B&Bs for the tens of thousands of hikers that pass through the city on their way from coast to coast. Not much Yelp activity in Grasmere so let me say it plainly and loudly: this place rocks. If I do this walk again I will specifically request to stay here. That good.

My only criticism of this facility was no shower gel/conditioner was provided but a nice pink hand soap was. Full Breakfast was nice & served on burn your hand plates, together with cereal, orange juice & all the toast you could eat. Parking is provided at the front & is just 2 mins from the town centre. Mike & Joan where perfect hosts as where the other staff we came into contact with in this warm & cosy establishment. Price is the same as all the others in street. I would use this place again.

This was one of the most delightful accommodation I had for my entire trip. Yvette and Norman were very welcoming. I was practically made to feel not like a paying guest, but rather as part of their family. Rooms are very reasonably priced, very clean and tidy. Breakfast is included, and includes an assortment of cereal, various fruit, juice, a full English breakfast, with eggs done any way you prefer. Yvette is a chef by training, and this shows with the quality of the cooked food. They have 2 adorable cocker spaniels. When first entering, they will bark. But once you're in, they're the most gentle, loving dogs one can imagine. Their favorite pastime appears to be having a had placed on them for petting. The location of the B&B is perfect. Only a few blocks away from the center of town and the train station, it is located on a quiet side street. There is actually a fair amount to do in Carlisle, most notably the Cathedral, Castle, and the Tullie House Museum, all located within a short walk of Langleigh House. Carlisle also has a nice assortment of good restaurants. I am looking forward to my next visit here.
