Having heard rave reviews from friends, I decided it was about time I gave this place a go. The menu states being influenced by the French and the Mediterranean. However, the starters consisted of a mish mash of combinations that they thought worked eg thai fish cakes, gravalax (Swedish) , dishes served with raita??
I persisted and ordered the gravalax. This was perfect, the cucumber with the correct amount of acidity. My partner also enjoyed the chicken livers but stated they were nothing out of the ordinary. My next course was the duck. I specified for this to be medium (not that the waiter asked) and it came back obliterated. It was so overdone that it couldn't be eaten. This was definitely disappointing. It always is when you know you could have made it better at home. The blueberry sauce was cumbersome.
My partner enjoyed his steak. That was medium how he asked. I don't quite know why they ignored my instruction. Desserts are passable but nothing to highlight.
Service generally was a disappointment. When I questioned that my duck was not medium, the waiter was argumentative. It was only when his older counterpart came along that there was some form of an apology. Also, when the waiter stepped outside for a quick cigarette break, when he entered, the gust of air and smoke went all over us.
I know this is a restaurant in Enfield but for the price that this restaurant is charging (I've eaten for less at a Michelin star restaurant), food is poor value for money and the service has much to learn! The Beautiful South comes across like it's a white tablecloth restaurant but it is far from that. There are no tablecloths. It needs to decide what it wants to be and then fix the cracks in the ceiling! read more
