Referred to A&E by GP. Following a bad fall with a knock to the head that knocked me out. I was advised I needed a CT scan and Xray. 14 hours in A&E. Saw a triage nurse within 15 minutes. No follow up care since. No query as to my symptoms worsening or improving. Hospital Nurses and Dr amazing but the emergency department is no longer fit for purpose. Its too small, over crowded and cramped. People on trolleys packed in like sardines. Dr and nurses constantly shuffling trolleys jus to make contact and get to side of a patient to examine them. People in A&E tying up beds in A&E because they cant be admitted to wards, during the night. Knock on effect. A&E staff have no space to work with patients out in waiting rooms Also think the computer system is inadequate and outdated. Im witnessing to many Dr spending far too much time sitting at computers instead of carrying out primary care function. Whichvis seeing and evaluating patients. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, phone charger, food and water with you. So you can lie down on floor while you wait. It will be more vomfotable than chairs provided and some seating is outdoors in a tent that was temporarily erected to deal with covid but is now in everyday use. read more

I had a consultation with a Gastroenterologist there, and oh my god, there 'Professor' Stephen Patchett is the most arrogant 'Doctor' I ever come across, he said evertyhing is my head, that I should seek help in a psiquiatric hospital, no empathy whatsoever, imaging if he is a 'professor', I can't imagine his students, all of them becoming a doctor just like him to only get big money. Dropped into shop in Beaumont hospital for a bottle of water. The guy serving seemed to have lost all his manners in a prior life. There was neither a price given nor a thank you. Bizarre that a person like this would be allowed work in a hospital environment. read more

Filthy dirty awful dump, i had a broken leg and couldnt get to the bathroom on my own, they ignored repeated pleas for assistance saying there were no wheelchairs available. I had not been given crutches at that point and had no choice but to pee into a blanket and drop it to the floor. another time i had to hobble over to a swivel chair and push myself down to the toilets when i came out there was a bunch of " nurses " sitting around laughing at me.!!! But still, none of them helped me to get back to the bed. I was given NOTHING to eat or drink for 24hrs and they wouldnt even allow me to get to the vending machines as there were no wheelchairs available. They said they were considering surgery on my leg to put pins in my shinbone but then just gave me this compression boot as they said they dont do casts anymore.They then gave me a used filthy dirty old pair of crutches. luckily a friend of mine showed up and I got the hell out of this nightmarish place. Theres more, i could go on and on. 9 months later and my leg still hasnt healed properly, still on crutches, still in pain everyday. I am extremely reluctant to go back to this place but i have no choice probably. I will be talking to solicitors. Shame on this government and the apathetic morons who manage this disgraceful dump. read more

Nobody likes hospitals. They're filled with disease, ailing loved ones and general feelings of misery. Beaumont as a result is a really really crappy hospital because not only does it feature all these intensely unpleasant things, it also has some really awful facilities. I spent much of last Summer visiting a relative here, and I loathe this big grey depressing slab of brick. The canteen is over-priced and closes far too early, not to mention the staff and food looking very unappealing. I would look angry too if I had to work there every day. The shop has very little on offer and will try to fleece you before you can ask for a bunch of grapes. I won't comment on the medical staff as there is no way I could judge that aspect of the hospital without qualification. I would try my best to avoid Beaumont if at all possible, but if a Dublin resident it's inevitable that visiting this particular hole is something you'll have to go through at some stage. I'm eating food and not vomiting! And no thanks to 14 hours of hell at Beaumount hospital! This was one of the most horrific experiences I've ever had. Here, I'll run down down the list a bit for you: We roll in (I'm in a wheel chair taken from the ambulance) and the hospital is over crowded with people sitting in chairs down hallways with IV bags. After my first assessment with a nurse I'm taken to sit in my very own chair. At this point I'm waiting for. ....30min? A nurse comes over to say she is going to give me some meds, what kind I don't know. So she preps the IV needles. I'm having a panic attack because I've been having one since the airport so the idea of a needle in my arm isn't cool. She doesn't seem to care, barely speaks to me and trys to put the needle it in but it hurts like hell and something wasn't right. I tried to tell her that and then said something like 'fuck that hurts' and she said " it's supposed to hurt, that's how this works" at which point I told her to take it out. My husband was also asking for it to be stopped because it was clearly hurting too much. Keep in mind I'm hyperventilating and can't stop shaking and she could care less. She pulled the needle out and said she won't be cursed at while squeezing the shit out of my arm with a cotton ball. I told her to let go off my fucking arm and asked if she knew what a panic attack was. Obviously that pissed her off and she continued to lecture us on how to treat nurse staff while I'm receiving the most unprofessional 'emergency' care in a hallway in a shit plastic chair with 40 other people. 30 minuets later another nurse comes over and inserted the IV with no problem and this is when my 14 hour wait in the chair begins. By this point I've vomited 10 times and can't even keep water down. The paramedics informed me that the tingling sensation all over my body is from extreme dehydration and because of my panic attack I am probably going into shock. So one would assume I need fluids but of course they don't come. As you can imagine I'm not doing so well, and from my husband's recollections I've become unresponsive and started falling out of my chair. He had to yell several times for help and they finally came over (this I remember) to yell in my face. Oh and they gave me fluids! Yas, all all I needed to do was pass out! We can fast forward 6 hours; my back hurts because I have some lower back & hip issues and and no human is supposed to sit in a tiny plastic chair for this long. I try to stand up but it just made me sick to my stomach. I told them I was in pain and they gave me Tylenol. Tylenol 6 hours later after they knew I had had a fever and was freezing. And we all know Tylenol can't even touch nerve pain in your hip and legs. Time goes by, I haven't seen a doctor and pain pain pain pain pain. Did I mention my stomach also hurt like crazy? This is when they tell my husband he needs to leave. 10.5 hours in my husband comes back to watch my bags so I can go to the bathroom. A few minutes after I get back the nurse comes over to scold us like children. I asked why he had to leave when everyone else had family with them. She got in my face and said other people were more sick and needed them. I said "and I don't?" She said " no. " At which point I was in tears again much like the entire visit. At one point that same nurse said I should have just boarded my plane and went home. It was really satisfying to tell her I had a gallbladder stone after I saw the doc 13 hours later. She just looked at me and said "oh." There is a lot I missed and more horrific stuff but I think this sums it up. read more

Recently I had to take a relative to the A&E at Beaumont Hospital. We went on a Sunday morning, and as I hoped, the A&E dept was not too busy. We were in and out in four hours. The staff we met: Receptionist, Triage Nurse, Doctor and Radiographer were courteous, kind and professional. Subsequently my relative went back to see the Dressings Sister and the physiotherapist. I was working so couldn't accompany her. She told me afterwards that everyone was "really lovely" to her (She's 86). Today we went back and again the staff we met were kind and helpful. Some observations: At no time during the two visits when I accompanied my relative did I see a single health care professional wash or gel their hands. That includes when my relative's dressing was taken down and redressed on at least four occasions. No wonder HIQA said in its report of 23 July 2013: "There was complete non adherence with standard precautions best practice. Advisory signage instructing correct hand hygiene procedures was not displayed at all sinks designated for hand hygiene. Overall hand hygiene practices observed in Beaumont Hospital were poor as outlined in the statistics below. This was brought to the attention of hospital management during the monitoring assessment." In the A&E gel dispensers were plentiful as were hand wash sinks, soap and paper towels. It seems you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink. When sitting in the waiting area in the A&E we were breathing in secondary smoke courtesy of the smokers outside the door to A&E. The hospital grounds are covered in very large signs declaring the site a "non-smoking campus". There signs and other smaller ones are everywhere, and everywhere people are smoking!! And of course no one is telling anyone to stop. Research clearly shows that secondary smoke causes disease and premature deaths in adults and children and that there is no such thing as a safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. I had a knee replacement done and was let home on the mon with my blood pressure all over the place so went to my own doc on the fri as I felt unwell she rang Beaumont hospital a &e to tell them I was coming in for bloods waiting for 6 hrs I was called in for bloods to b told I have another 2hr wait for results 3 hrs later I was called to see a doc he said I had to have X-ray on my chest which was not bothering me then called in to b told he wouldn't b looking after me he was handing me over to the medical team at this stage I was waiting 10hrs so I waited and waited no one came near me my partner had to ask a nurse for pain relief for my knee as by this time I was in a lot of pain with my knee in any 3 hrs he had to ask for more relief still no doc 6 in the morning we asked how many more was in front of me 3 she said the day staff came in then we heard the nurse say about me don't worry about this patient she is only orpidic at 9.45 a doc can and told me go home every thing was fine and that gp can b scare mongers I off I went the next day I was passing a lot of clots went to the doc who wanted to send me back a&e I couldn't go back after 16 hrs in there the day before two wks later with my own doc help I am making a good recovery all that time in beautmont with out a cup of tea something has to b done maureen 7 read more

Here right now for complications from tonsillitis that resulted in me coughing up blood. Staff have been nothing but patient, attentive, pleasant and effective. Luckily it was 5am on a Tuesday morn and the A&E dept is not too crowded. One nurse and two doctors give me painkillers and antibiotics thru an IV as my throat is too swollen to swallow anything. I had to wait a little while for the actual procedure to rectify my swollen tonsil, but the wait was pleasant as I had a comfy chair to sit on and was content from the painkillers. They will keep me overnight for observation and it does not seem like a dreaded event - they've already fed me twice, given me more medicine, and visitors' hour is coming. The negative reviews here dont seem to realise the pressure the staff here are ordinarily under. Our public health system is in crisis, these people are intentionally underpaid and overworked. Every member of staff her from the doctor who drained my tonsil, to the porter that led my fevered self to the operation room, to the dinner lady who gave me mashed potatoes, to the nurse that moved me from a chair to a bed, to the carer on duty who's simply asking everyone's names and asking how they are, have my absolute respect and adoration. They break their backs to fix mine (so to speak). Maybe i just got here on a good day! read more
