This is not the touristy side of Ghent where they try to please mass-production tastes while also fleecing the aspiring Belgian beer fan. This is a superb selection of superb brews at really nice prices, and portion sizes are ample. This is a world-class beer bar. The service is respectful, but if you show some warmth, the warmth is returned. The place is hard to find if you take public transportation - - I almost passed by thinking it was closed till seeing the entrance tucked around the back from across the canal. The atmosphere is sleek in spots, sweet funky in other spots, and the written beer list is augmented by a chalk board with recent arrivals. Go here if you are not into tourist hype, but just want to choose from a great selection of Belgian beers at prices that put the rest of world-class beer bars to shame (in other words: a Belgian beer bar of your price/selection dreams). There's an Indonesian take out-place a couple blocks east if you want to cap it all off nicely.

I am sorry to say this place disappointed us in almost every way. I could not check in because…read morethere's no cell signal here. But we stopped by for a beer and a bite. My husband thought this place might have an awesome beer list and might have some live music, but it had neither. He sat on the patio while I wandered around the Christmas market. I assumed he'd start drinking without me and took my time wandering around the market. I was shocked when I returned 30 minutes later to find him still sitting outside not drinking anything. The woman had come outside several times he said but basically ignored him. We went inside to get served and the service was a bit brusque. She was impatient and clearly annoyed. We ordered beers (the Framboise was killer on tap - way fresher than in the U.S.) and a plate of olives and cheese. She insisted we pay immediately and never checked back on us again. We cannot be certain but something we ate this night made us both violently ill and the olives and cheese are pretty far up there on my list of suspects. The place was dank and dirty. I'm sure it's cool when there is music playing but I did not enjoy the atmosphere at all. And sadly that makes this my only one-star rating of our entire European trip. :-(
