Turns out it…read moreis a giant nature park along the river, but it's privately owned/managed, which I have never really experienced with a park before. The owners basically donated this area to the public to use. It's actually really cool. There are a bunch of waterfalls here which were the most enjoyable part for me personally. I sat for a while on a hilly slope in the shade and just enjoyed the sound of the water. There's also a walking trail that is not too long and definitely doable that has some bridges and nice spots where you can see and hear the water. They had ample clean restrooms and a lot of information about the area posted on boards that you could read. As I was headed to the bathroom I saw a woman picking something and eating it. That was another thing that was a new experience for me. After I used the restroom I walked over to where she was and I saw that there were wild strawberries growing. It felt strange, but I decided to pick one myself and eat it. When in Rome right? It actually wasn't ready yet and it was a bit sour but it was a new experience for me to forage on public use land. They also had a place for viewing salmon and I was excited for that because I love to go to my local fish hatchery but unfortunately we came in the wrong season and everything was dried up and empty. I definitely would have enjoyed that section of the park if it had been the right time of year and I think it's a cool experience that everyone should have. Overall this is a very good road trip stop or place to check out if you're in the area. I definitely learned a lot and I was able to just relax and appreciate the beauty of nature for a while.

I've been wanting to come to this park for several years and I'm so glad I finally did! It is as alluring on foot as it was by passing by it in the car!

The forest is an hour away from this building. You can type in the name into any map and choose one of the entrances. The way we went was through a back road passing several homes in the flat valley that's surrounded by mountains and woods. It will lead you to the welcome sign, then you'll pass a camp ground. There are less people going this way, so the hikes might only have 1/2 a dozen people on it. You will see many trails options, and they will all be gorgeous! The Skokomish Lower South Fork Trail is a great one. It has a very small gravel parking area, and it is a 6 mile hike in total. You'll go in 3 miles to Brown Creek, and then back 3 miles. I would say it's a semi strenuous hike. There's some down hill, and uphill, but mostly its level. Bring plenty of water, SPF, and snacks. Also stop at the restroom just before heading up the gravel road to the beginning of the trail. You'll pass a few little ice cold babbling brooks that will be very easy to walk across without getting your feet wet.

There is a paved trail for biking or rollerblading or just plain ole walking. There are also several "off the beaten path" trails so you can kind of venture off into the more wooded area. It's not too overgrown with foliage though, so you'd have a hard time getting lost or injured (unless you're not paying attention). All the trails lead back to the paved trail so you have zero chance of getting lost and the back end of the park is fenced, as it faces a street, so it's so small you cannot get lost. Seriously. As mentioned, there is access to the lake. I think it's Hicks Lake, but I'm only going off the street name. You can feed the ducks or maybe go swimming. There obviously is no lifeguard and I'm not even sure you can go swimming here. Do your own research. After you're done swimming (if it's allowed), which I'm not sure how toxic the water is, you can come up the hill a bit and picnic on one of the two picnic tables. There are no pavilions or covered tables so it may not be the best when it's raining or if you're hosting a big party. You might want to try the Woodland Creek Community Park since they also have a community center for like if you're doing a wedding or something. http://www.yelp.com/biz/woodland-creek-community-park-lacey The parking area is small as well with maybe no more than 10 spots that are not angled. The general feel of this park is just enough to make you sit right after a short stroll. Hold your pee as there are no bathrooms, or just pee in the water or woods (don't hate). The park is well kept and there have trash cans and doggie doo bags. It's not as lengthy as I would like. I like to have at least 2 or 3 miles so I can burn off some energy. That's one reason I like Grandview Chambers Bay Bike and Hike Trail . Now that is a park! http://www.yelp.com/biz/grandview-chambers-bay-bike-and-hike-trail-university-place. It's nestled between the roads that lead in and out of downtown Olympia. The fountain shoots water jets up from the pavement at different intervals so it keeps you guessing where the water will come from. I believe I've seen signage that they do treat the water so it's sanitary as well. It stops the water jets every couple of minutes to keep up with the filtration. One thing I love about this park is that there is a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds that come to play in the fountain or make use of the park benches. Young couples, hipsters, older married couples, families, all the single ladies, non-binary folks, and even people in business suits. It's not just a cool fountain that lights up at night, it's a place for people to commune and I think that's great since downtown Olympia often gives off that vibe. So, If you don't feel like going over to the plaza in front of the Children's museum to get wet during the summer, head over to the Heritage Park Fountain right across the street from Capitol Lake Park.
