It may not be the first place that comes to mind when holiday shopping but I had the idea of gifting a series of flowers that align with birth months, anniversaries and special memories as gifts. Think of it as 'art' that lives in your yard. But that's about all I had figured out. Luckily, the folks at Bates took care of the rest. First things first, the place is large. It's not overwhelmingly so (so, not Opryland) but it's big enough that if you don't know what you're doing or what you're looking for, you're going to be the Sims character who just spins. Not being shy about my lack of clues, I walked up to the desk and said what I was trying to do/buy and I didn't know what else to do after that. After being complimented about my thoughtfulness, I was tag-teamed: I was given directions to find a specific person to talk to about flowers and another about shrubbery. Given that you will actually be walking through distinct areas/zones, I was given landmarks to note. I appreciated all of this. I was a fish out of water and every instruction was a sign of kindness. I found my first contact (who had been given a heads up by walkie talkie) and she was awesome. She was so awesome that I just went all in with flowers and forgot the shrubs. She explained zones, planting times, soil, perennials vs annuals, etc. I took notes (seriously). And then she started walking me through the selection. Bates.Has.Everything. They do. Don't ask. Just trust. And a side effect of having everything is fair pricing. They have everything and they have a lot of it so you aren't on the hook to spend a lot due to scarcity. I left the nursery with a bit of an education, plants that mean something to the recipients and continue to adorn yards, money in my pocket for other gifts, and a good feeling from shopping local and supporting a business that's been around for almost 100 years. There are so many cool businesses to discover on Yelp outside of food and drink. Dig in, explore and patronize what makes your metro unique.

By this policy, they can easily send the wrong plant AGAIN and still charge me for shipping. No thank you. Their refund policy: All sales are final. No returns. No refunds. They hold to this policy come hell or high water, and will not take any accountability for their mistakes. Per the email exchange, Patsy explained to me that they were aware of what plant was sent, and proceeded to send it anyway. Patsy Black is rude and incredibly unreasonable. Pray for that woman.

We continued to drive up the long road & found another sign that said open till 5pm. Once we got to the office we were scolded for showing up when they were closing. We explained we had driven about 12 miles out of our way to visit them as we have a new build & need lots of landscaping plants /trees/shrubs & we had checked their website for their hours. The lady said she changes it but it goes back to 5pm & she's doesn't know why. We were told we should have turned around at the gate since it said closed at 4. We then told them they had another sign that said open till 5. They didn't care & if we'd turned around at the gate we wouldn't have seen the sign for 5pm. She told us they were closing & gave my husband a pamphlet of their inventory. I told her I already had looked at their stuff online & had a list of plants I was interested in, she didn't care, they told us to come back another time. We won't, in fact the next day we went to Riverbend & had the opposite experience. Riverbend has an incredible selection & fantastic employees ready to answer questions, it's a joy to shop at Riverbend!

You are way too smart for your own good guessing correctly on your first try. Well done you. The Barrel Shop in Lynchburg is adjacent to their main gift shop in the adorable little downtown (only area of town?) section. Inside you can find gorgeous items made from used Jack Daniels barrels. Just as a sampling they have - bar stools, mini bars, serving trays, pub tables, chests, wall bars, birdhouses, keychains, boxes, rocking chairs, coasters, and planters. I didn't find the prices to be all that bad either though a tad on the high side - $70 for a planter but keychains were just $5. Jack Daniels doesn't use their barrels twice so they have to do something with them! What better souvenir to get from the distillery?! Everything is very nicely crafted, I must say. If you spend $10 here (and at many of the other shops as well), you'll get a free Jack Daniels shot glass. Shot shot shot!
