Scarlet Macaws are majestic birds residing in the tropical rainforest and amazons that exist in Central and Latin America. the Macaw's habitat is being threatened by deforestation. the macaw itself is highly prized as a captive "trophy bird". this also threatens it's existence. the military/police figure represent forces opposed to the macaw's existence. there may be other explanations. it's clear the macaw and the police/military are on opposite sides, literally and figuratively. creator: pablitosomething

Collectively, I spent hours waiting…read morefor the 22-Fillmore or the 10-Townsend (whichever came first) right in front of this mural; I know how quickly graffiti appears after it's removed, so total preservation is definitely a losing battle. What irks me more than anything is how faded the colors are. The original mural was vibrant, and I wish the artist would come back and restore it. Sadly, this building will probably soon be demolished and replaced by another out-of-scale and ugly--but painted pretty colors!--shoebox that our fair city likes to call housing, so even a restoration wouldn't save the mural from destruction. I think OJ Simpson used to be the football player pictured in the mural, and I'm not sure whether the characters that are barely visible now were originally there or were added later. It really was neat back in the day, but I was a nine-year-old kid living in Southern California when it was first painted, so I didn't notice it until 2010 at the very earliest, and by that time, it was a faded mess. The 22-Fillmore no longer runs on Connecticut; this part of its route has been replaced by the 55-Dogpatch (horrible name!), and the 10-Townsend is still suspended, so who knows whether I'll ever wait at this corner again as part of my regular life? If I do, I'll think about how the mural used to look: still bad but not as bad as it looks now.

This statue will make no sense to most people. That's fine. It's kind of weird and freakish and…read moredisturbing as a standalone menace on Haight Street. But if you rode the 6 and 7 buses back in the day, you remember spying the original piece of art nearby called Silly Pink Bunny. It had all the weirdness of Bronze Bunny, except it was pink and, thus, way more menacing. It reminded me and lots of people of the weird imaginary/real character from Donnie Darko, which, fun fact, was filmed partially at my high school. Fast-forward to 2013. They're going ahead with plans to turn the old UC Extension building into housing. Great. But Silly Pink Bunny apparently had to go to make way for construction. Knowing this, and seeing that it disappeared soon thereafter, yet its artistic niche remained, I believed and started spreading the neighborhood rumor that someone had stolen Silly Pink Bunny in order to save it from destruction, à la one of those Bob's Big Boy statues from further back in the day. And what do you know? Silly Pink Bunny actually had a funeral. It was demolished in this big ceremony that included music. I wish I had been there. Or maybe I don't. I'm a little bit sad that thieves didn't steal Silly Pink Bunny. I was kind of hoping it would be found in some warehouse somewhere. Bronze Bunny is great. Like I said, without all the history, it's a fine piece of art in its own right. But it pales in comparison to what it commemorates. Plus it's not in the exact location of its predecessor. I'm so glad they allowed it to be installed here.

I'm not sure how or why, but he created The locally famous Silly Pink Bunny on the corner of Haight & Laguna. It was eventually torn down, and plans immediately started to create a more sturdy, pest-proof permanent sculpture at 215 Haight, where the Haight Street Art Center is. Over $70,000 was raised via crowdfunding & the Bronze Bunny was unveiled April 29, 2017 to a large crowd of jubilant supporters. Afterwards, Jeremy signed posters at Fifty 24, the line snaking around the block. Not going to find this on tourist maps- so impress your friends with your insider's knowledge.

Man, haters gonna hate…read more There is one really harsh review on Yelp, but from what I've read, it's not entirely unreflective of public sentiment. ...OK. I can sort of see the viewpoint. The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is about as classic and old school as you'll get. It's actually modeled on another museum in France. I actually really like this piece. I probably like it at a four-star level, but I'll use this opportunity to give it some love because it certainly deserves some. The piece is very modern, and I think quite evocative of the red steel of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is meant to represent the wings of the goddess Nike. (Not the shoes, kids...) I love how it juxtaposes with the colors of San Francisco as you look at it with Downtown in the background. There is also a beauty is you catch it in the right light as the son is rising - it is possible to get the angle right so that the steel looks like the rays of the Sun. The sculptor's name is Mark di Suvero. He grew up in San Francisco.
