The dentist was great too but he did remove his mask towards the end while standing up and explained my treatment plan. He did maintain distance but was still in the room with me so that made me a little uncomfortable. I also wished they could elaborate more on preventive measure for future reference in addition to treatment. He actually read me the riot act!!! There was no medical concern at all. Zero compassion, empathy or even ask if I was in pain. I just called and wanted my antibiotics refilled until I could get to my appt in August. (The staff got me in the next day). He refused to refill it and when I asked if he was going to even look at the abscess, he said " No, why should I". If you are not here for the procedure (surgery) I just inconvenienced him and his staff and wasted his time, someone else could have been in the chair instead of me. No one told me that I was to have surgery right there and then. They called at 9:30 and told me to be there at 4. I really only asked to have him look at it when I called. I was totally clueless and then they canceled my August appt. and made the next surgery date for October. They can keep it. I will not be back. I highly recommend that you find someone else. He is not pleasant, no bedside manner. You are just a process that he hates evidently. Every minute must be dollars to him. After he spoke to a patient the way he did to me, I would hate to see how he treats his family and staff. By the way, the staff was very understanding and sympathetic.

In early September 2025 I was at my remote lake house in Hiles, WI with discomfort from food trapped under a molar. No dentists nearby were available so I searched Wausau, Wisconsin and found Dr. James S. Kim who advertises "all phases of dentistry." Called 9/4 and explained that food kept getting caught causing pain. Staff told me to take Tylenol/Aleve for almost two weeks as the earliest appointment: she booked was 9/16/25. No mention of cost. This was obviously NOT an emergency visit and should not have been charged as one. I was trusting they would offer me a standard of care required by the profession at standard fees for the area. The day before the visit they called and informed me I had to pay $379 for the appointment with no explanation of what it included. As a new patient, I assumed it would cover x-rays, exam and cleaning from a dental hygienist. I trusted they were ethical. I drove one hour. The staff took x-rays and set me in a room. Dr James Kim examined my teeth and told me there was a cavity. I asked about a teeth cleaning and was told there would be no cleaning - that it costs an additional $142 and they were booked out until November. They told me they have no hygienist to clean teeth - that Dr. Kim does all cleanings. Dr Kim explained I had a cavity and his treatment recommended was: Two crowns - the tooth with the cavity and the one next to it Wisdom tooth extraction - (it was not cracked or causing me any problems whatsoever) Night guard Total cost - $5,593.00 for treatment for 1 cavity. I inquired about doing a filling but Dr. Kim claimed a simple filling was "impossible." I was leaving Wisconsin at the end of October so I did not book anything with Dr. Kim. I believed and trusted him when he said I needed all of this recommended treatment for $5,593. He asked me what I did for a living which I found odd. He did not ask me anything else about my life. I immediately made an appointment in St Louis with a general / cosmetic/restorative dentist. I did not tell them about my experience or diagnosis with Dr Kim. The soonest they could see me was November 19, 2025. Diagnosis after new X-rays: a cavity and treatment was routine filling needed -- $185. No crowns, no extractions, no mouth guard - no SCAMMING! For reference, my St. Louis new-patient visit ($400) included for 1 year - two cleanings, 2 fluoride treatments, full X-rays, and 2 exams and discounts for treatments. Far more than the nothing I got for $379 from Dr. Kim. This felt like classic predation on a senior in pain far from home: delay care, spring a big fee, then scare with thousands in unnecessary irreversible treatment. I've demanded my $379 back and filed with the BBB. Small-claims court in Marathon County is next if they don't refund by December 10, 2025. Seniors and out-of-towners -- AVOID DR KIM and this office. I am considering filing a complaint with the Wisconsin Dental Association & American Dental Association

We tried a few others in the area and we finally landed upon Northwoods Dentistry in Wooddruff (Minocqua). Although we are pretty good judge of our personal needs---this was a huge mistake. While customers of this dental clinic---and not for a very long time---we were charged for mistakes (a filling on my wifes tooth fell off---2 times) ..the first time the dental clinic took care of it. But the second time they wanted us to pay to reattach it---so i complained about that and said I didn't think that was right --they subsequently reversed the charges. Then one day-- I had a bad tooth ache--real bad---and I felt abandoned---no help for my pain. It was up to me to find relief. So I searched and searched and found a Dentist in Park Falls that gave me relief. But the real kicker---I had another tooth that was bad---I mean really really bad --although i am not a woman...I would have preferred giving birth than dealing with this pain. Again--i felt abandoned by Northwoods Dental Clinic of Minocqua. So I searched and searched on the web and landed upon Szmanda Dental Clinic in Wausau--it was about 6:30 pm and somebody actually answered the phone. I was treated with so much respect and empathy---they fit me in the next day and I was finally put out of my misery as Doctor Nichols and his staff --on the spot--- extracted the tooth that was giving me so much agony--thank you Szmanda Dentistry. More to the story: We decided to move all of our dental deeds to Szmanda Dentistry and Doctor Nichols-- my wife is kinda woosy when it comes to dentistry stuff---they treated her with kid gloves--she was very relaxed when we left.
