pretty average, will do if you need somewhere to pop in but it seems as though they have had the same food menu for years and years

The cinnamon bun/scroll is HEAVENLY: think soft, pillowy, buttery layered brioche swirled with sugary, cinnamony deliciousness. I recommend getting up early in the morning to get one of those babies nice and hot out of the oven - I did and I did not regret it. The service was impeccable: I told the guy behind the counter that I was in a bit of a hurry and the food was brought to the table in less than 10 minutes. Everyone including all the waiters I chatted with were lovely. Will definitely come back when/if I am back!

There is usually a busy atmosphere in there these days as it's become a deservedly popular spot to meet friends and colleagues for coffee or lunch. The brunch menu is good, with enough vegetarian options, and the cooks will also make non-meat versions on request, which is great. The cabinet is full of interesting salads and nice cakes too! Service is prompt and if you don't like your coffee they will remake it without being grumpy about it - as real baristas should. Unfortunately, the coffee does not appear to be Fair Trade - it would be great if this could be looked at, as then the Good Oil would deserve a 5 star rating.

Fuel for the Soul Before the Summit…read more We stopped into Vanessa's Cottage Café in search of a quick bite and a caffeine fix before the 3-hour drive to Mt. Cook, but the moment we stepped inside, we were swept away by the warm, nostalgic aroma of pot pies, quiche, brownies, and fudge. Our caffeine cravings were quickly replaced by pure sensory bliss. The meat pies were sadly sold out (clearly a local favorite!), so we went with the gluten-free bacon, onion & cheese quiche, and WOW. Buttery, flavorful, and melt-in-your-mouth perfect. You could taste the care (and the cheese) baked into every bite. Then came the sweet temptations. The dessert case is beautifully displayed and gave me the sense that this is where Vanessa's heart truly shines. We grabbed a chocolate chunk brownie and a blueberry banana dark chocolate muffin to-go, and both were absolutely divine. Moist, rich, and perfectly balanced. For coffee, we ordered a long black, a double shot of espresso with hot water (think a bolder Americano). The beans were decent - not the star of the show, but more than good enough to sip alongside all the baked goodness. If you're heading toward the mountains, make this your fuel stop. Stock up on real, homemade food that feeds both your body and your spirit. Vanessa's isn't just a café...it's a cottage full of comfort, care, and culinary charm. Safe travels and we'll see you down the road! MLA

Along with having a prime location along the pedestrian only strip of Jetty St with easy parking along Vogel, it has great art just outside and also inside the courtyard area. The fact that paint buckets and scaffolding had been set up inside didn't deter people at all from collecting inside Heritage, a testament to the effort put into designing the cafe. Our experience was determinedly efficient yet friendly. As a full service cafe, Heritage offers all your caffeinated needs along with a solid pastry, sandwich, and salad selection. Still and sparkling water are self-serve, but all other in-house orders are hand-delivered to your table. There's a range of seating options too: outdoor tables, a long counter perfect for people watching, and booths. Somehow everything fits neatly into the space without seeming patched together. According to the website, booths can be booked in advance too. My family enjoyed our Flat Whites and a Mocha (served with two marshmallows). The Friand had raspberry filling inside, and actually tasted more like sweet rice flour than almond flour - delicious even if it wasn't what we were expecting. I haven't been this excited by a bathroom for a while, but hopefully once you've made the trip you'll be excited too. Look for the door that's perfectly camouflaged along the wooden wall of the courtyard to find three separate bathroom stalls. Amongst the sparkling white furniture, something seems amiss. Before you drip your washed hands all over the floor, check behind the mirror for some truly efficient use of space (and paper towels)!
