And then you open it, tomato sauce everywhere.

Unfortunately the last time I went to the County Arms I and my family felt the food was not as good as it once was. The burger I had did not seem to be cooked all the way through and we did have to ask for them to take it back which they did so and gave a new burger at a reduced price. The waiters/waitresses are usually helpful and do a good job. Overall I think the County Arms is a decent restaurant for the money you pay.

If you are looking to get away from more touristy Marazion or Penzance, make the drive to Porthleven and eat here. We started with the bread with hummus and olives. The bread had a warm fennel flavor and the hummus had great texture. My friends had the warm seafood starter and I had the Porthleven crab. It was everything crab should be: sweet, fresh and juicy. For mains all three of us had the same dish: hake filet with sautéed greens, pea shoots, lemon, anchovies and capers. It was a perfectly balance dish and the fish was cooked perfectly. Dessert was a creme brûlée with rhubarb compote and ginger ice cream. Quite lovely. Service was excellent. Beware, it's a small place and very popular. You will need a reservation!

All the locals were a bit against the place at the start because it replaced a hardware store which had been in business since the 1950s. However, once they tried the food they were completely converted - and so were we. Everything here was fresh, locally found and made from scratch. My starter was the daily special: freshly caught and simply grilled mackerel. It was full of flavour and tasted great. I then had Cornish steak with hand cut chips. The meat was served perfectly with just enough truffle butter to bring out it's taste. The chips were crispy and delicious - almost as good as Fernandez and Leluu's ones! The rest if the menu was mainly fish and looked as good to eat as everything I had. We finished with a dessert of vanilla panacotta and two spoons. It was so good that we had to order a second. I can't recommend this place enough for anyone passing through St. Ives - or make a detour if you're close by.
