Once my friend and I found out The Hague had a beach, we walked for 45 minutes to find it, and once…read morewe found it, we were starving. We walked up to The Fat Mermaid to look over a menu and, honestly, when I saw the Fat Mermaid Breakfast, we were sold. Asked for a table right then and there. Service was a little slow, I did make a note of that. It took a while for someone to come ask for our order. We were content to lounge on the patio and we didn't have anywhere to go, so we didn't really mind, but if you're in a hurry, I'd warn you about that. The food, however, was definitely worth the wait. I started with a cup of decaf coffee and an orange juice and then got the Fat Mermaid Breakfast (which, as you can see from the photo, is a veritable breakfast feast) and my friend got the Fat Frenchie (French toast). I was super pleased with my meal. The eggs were fluffy, the smoked salmon (possibly my favorite food in the world) was homesmoked and great, and I liked the assortment of breads. It's also worth noting that this is an excellent location. Right up on the beach so you can watch the waves roll in and the restaurant is well-furnished with many places to sit both inside and out. I would definitely recommend The Fat Mermaid if you have the time, it's a charming little place with great food!

The…read moreJazz players are phenomenal, the crowd is a mix of young and old, locals and internationals and everyone's there to appreciate the music and have a great time with their friends. The space is quite tiny, which adds to the atmosphere as well as fill up the bar a little too quickly. One thing is true: It's Dutch 'gezelligheid' at its best. I might just have picked the best night to be here, in which case, you might not find this bar worth 5 stars on other days. To me however, the Sunday alone makes it worth it.

While I've only been to Societeit Engels once, and don't know much about the venue, I will say that…read morewe had a magical evening here! On the final night of their Americana season, we saw the world-class David Olney and Sergio Webb perform here. Because the venue is fairly small, you get a very intimate experience, and they let us put some stools right by the side of the stage. The venue is decorated with all kinds of jazz and blues figurines and memorabilia, and it has a very comfortable (gezellig!) atmosphere. The place is sort of U-shaped, which allows them to fit in more people yet maintain the sense of intimacy. Something about the feeling of this venue really helped people loosen up, and everyone seemed to be having a blast. Much more relaxed atmosphere than when I saw David and Sergio at another venue two days later. Staff at the bar, ticket office, etc. was super friendly, and the concert was amazing. One of the best nights I've had in a long time! PS: Didn't take us too long to find parking nearby, but keep in mind that the machine doesn't accept coins and doesn't seem to take foreign cards. We ended up getting a ticket !!
