Why 5 stars? Because you get ice cream and a show here…read more --- --- --- My sister-in-law and her kids came here before and raved about it, so we made it a stop during our time in Galveston. When we initially walked in, they warned us that it would be about 30 minutes, which was shocking, but appreciated. In the meantime, we just sat at the bar, mesmerized by the process of watching them turn liquid into rolled ice cream, time after time. My concoction was vanilla ice cream with oreo, cookie dough, cherries and caramel. I have to say, I think this combo should be a part of the suggested menu, because it was, as they say in the UK, A-1. I wouldn't want to wait that long for ice cream on a regular basis, but we were in no hurry and there was no way we weren't going to wait, given how much it had been a topic of conversation with the family over the course of the week leading up to the visit. And it ended up being really great!

The original store was once ran by Michael Cordray's family a century ago. I think it was his great grandfather's brother. Nonetheless, it's now an amazing ice cream shop with all the vintage feels to it. I should specify that it's a rolled ice cream shop and the perfect treat after a day at the beach or a stroll through town. Lots of mix-ins to choose from to help make your rolled ice cream treat as delicious and unqiue as you are.

I got a t-shirt too that I wore for years until it was ultimately retired. I actually wrote a Yelp review about it that I deleted. In it, I said "The smell of the waffle cones filled the place with smiles and enjoyment. I knew I wanted a waffle cone." What a terrible critic. He will never be Yelp Elite. I haven't been back to Hey Mikey's since then, just because I haven't really been back to Galveston in some time, but my memories of the unique ice cream flavors and toppings remained. Heading back to Galveston for a cruise, I wanted to try and make a stop there again for nostalgia's sake. Instead of heading to the Airbnb, my girlfriend and I drove straight to Hey Mikey's as our first stop in Galveston. We got there around 8:45 pm, which was 15 minutes before they closed (our fault). This is no diss to Hey Mikey's, but almost everything else on The Strand on a Thursday night closes way too early, so it felt like everyone was at Hey Mikey's. The line was extensive in front of us and behind us even after it closed. After waiting through the line for quite some time, I got a waffle cone with their cereal milk ice cream, which had Fruity Pebbles in it, topped with Lucky Charms. They gave it to me with a temperature-changing plastic spoon that turned from yellow to purple when cold. The ice cream was sensational. What an incredible flavor. The only downside was the waffle cone being a little stale, but I fault that to it being a waffle cone ordered right at closing time. The next night, I returned with my cousins and ordered a cup of cereal milk ice cream with Cocoa Puffs as the topping instead. Fantastic stuff. Once again, being there too close to closing meant we had to wait, and we didn't get our ice cream until 9:30, a full 30 minutes after they closed. It was nice that they still served us though! One thing I did notice, which I don't know if it's a normal thing, is that since Hey Mikey's is the only ice cream shop open past 8 o'clock on most weeknights, they seem to get a lot of foot traffic after that time. Their menu is pretty large in its offerings. If it were just scoops of ice cream, the line would move fast, but so many people were ordering shakes, which are a lot more labor-intensive and removed a staff member from their assembly line to focus on the shake. I don't have any advice on how they could easily move the line in the later hours of the night, but man, those kids are working their butts off for everyone to get their late-night sweet treat. Hey Mikey's, you are just as good as I remember.

I've been visiting since I was a little girl, and coming back reminded me exactly why it's such a staple on the Strand. This place has been part of Galveston for generations, and it still delivers that same magic. It's always busy, always full of energy, and there's truly something here for everyone. The candy shop alone is worth the stop--rows of old-fashioned sweets, fresh confections, and that nostalgic atmosphere you just don't find anymore. The divinity is divine, and the ice cream is just as good as I remembered. I had the lemon custard (so good!), my brother got a scoop of chocolate on a cone, and my friend ordered cinnamon. My mom insisted she didn't want anything...until she tried my friend's cinnamon. She loved it so much she immediately went and got her own, which says everything. And for $5 a scoop, two could easily share. This is one of those must-stop places when you're on the Island. Whether you're there for the ice cream, the candy, or just the experience, it never disappoints. A+.

One scoop is $5. Visit on a Sunday afternoon, it was quite a crowd, in January. Taffy man was making fresh taffy and still throwing it to the crowd. I love seeing this. Glad to see they're keeping old traditions alive.

On a nice sunny day walk on over to Rita's for a cool, refreshing, and delicious treat The interior is clean. It did have an older almost diner vibe. Or maybe more like like a beachy Dairy Queen, but more vibrant, and not depressing. There's both interior and exterior seating to choose from Their core competencies are Italian ice and custard, and there's plenty of varieties of both. They have a menu, and there's also plenty of offerings advertised on the walls of the interior The staff were friendly, the service was quick and solid. I also think their offerings are fairly affordable Some tips: There isn't much in the way of parking, but we snagged a spot near Doc Holidays (next door). I would recommend the Gelati as it's a combination of custard and Italian ice. There's both sugars at the bottom and top. We got the mango gelati, and it was the perfect blend of creamy sweet with refreshing mango. As I mentioned, the beach is just across the way, so, take your treat to go and walk along the beach. But eat quick before it melts! Cheers!!

Sounded good to me, sign me up. After a brief search for parking, we hopped out and got in about an hour before closing time. This is one of those joints that serves breakfast and lunch, the closes. Noted for my next visit. We walked in and were greeted promptly and seated. This place gives off a general store with an old diner type vibe. I was digging it, feeling very nostalgic. The nice waitress took our drink order, and we perused the menu. With an hour left to close, I prompted my party not to take their sweet time. The menu has a lot of delicious looking breakfast items and some yummy sandwiches. In the mood for brunch, I focused on the breakfast portion, as did most of my party. All, with the exception of my wife ordered the French toast with bacon. I ordered my bacon crispy. The wife ordered a BLT of some sort. The food came in good time. We all got to work quickly on our plates so we fill our bellies, and let these nice folks go home. One of my kiddos complained their bacon was too crispy. Looking down at my bacon, it looked a little limp. I took a bite and my bacon was like rubber. Well crud. The waitress mixed the orders up. I could have just got their bacon, and they could get mine, but I do not like fingering someone else's food. That was on me, but if you do not like chewy bacon, ask them to make it crispy, and not mix it up. I started on my plate and woofed the French toast down. It was pretty good. I will admit I had higher hopes and it was a bit underwhelming. Tasted more of the griddle than I wanted it to. That being said, it still was pretty good. We all finished our plates, looked around the store briefly, paid, then were gone in a flash. Overall, not a bad experience. We will be back on one of our future trips to the strand. There were a lot of menu items that I would like to try. As I browsed at other entrees of other patrons as I walked out, I got a better idea of what to order next time. I would recommend Star Drug Store for sure. Enjoy!

It had way too much vinegar in it, and it was not edible at all. The waiters explained to me that it was garlic slaw. It was not it was vinegar slaw. As far as the ribbon sandwich, let me say if you went to the store and bought sliced pastrami, put two slices on a piece of bread, literally and a couple tablespoons of sauerkraut with some thousand Island dressing on a cheap piece of rye bread that was probably from oral wheat or a store-bought brand. That is the explanation a total joke of a sandwich and it was $15 for the sandwich so disappointed I will never go back there again. I think it's a place for the tourist not the locals at all.
