We were in town from louisville for my daughters cheer comp and just had dinner at a nearby by broad ripple establishment and decided to go exploring. Overall, like an h of broad ripples public service Thai was bright, colorful and fun to check one. Good piece in a great area for public art fans.

This mural is actually a collection of four murals by Joy Hernandez. Hernandez uses an astronaut named Bean in many of her murals. This one is no exception. The mural in the front, titled Cosmic Dance, has bean the astronaut break dancing agains a pink background with yellow polka dots. On the side, to the left (with you facing the mural) is Hernandez's Voyager mural which depicts a satellite against a black background with blue polka dots. On the side, to the right (with you facing the mural) is the piece titled Pale Blue Dot. Spoiler alert, the blue dot is Earth. That mural depicts some colorful dots among an image that appears to be the sun and some planets like Saturn and Jupiter off in the distance. You will also see fading blue polka dots against the black background, which is a theme among these murals. The final mural, which is on the back is titled Sounds of Small Creatures and depicts Bean the astronaut spinning the 1s and 2s, against a pink, red and orange background with, yep you guessed it, yellow polka dots. The murals are not artistic marvels by far, but are Hernandez's classic style. They are very color and gives off a pop art type of vibe. All the murals on the structure go very well together and are seamless. You can find many of Hernandez's work across the city. If it is a mural and has an astronaut in it, then it is more than likely her. There is metered street parking within a short walk of this mural or you can just pull into the alley that the mural overlooks and park there to get a closer look. As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. But that is a stretch and very loosely linked to the company. It is now the Offices of Shook Reality Group, and fortunately they decided to keep this awesome mural. It was painted by local artist Christopher Blice and Jon Edwards aka Blice Edwards in 2014. Ok, now that I got my rant out of the way, this is an awesome mural. It is very life-like, be it a huge life. The mural is located off of a parking lot, so parking is not an issue here if you want to get out and take a closer look The mural depicts 37 common household tools that most people would have as if on an old-school pegboard. Now a days we use magnets and rails for that. The doors are incorporated into the painting very nicely, somewhat camouflaged into the painting. I like this mural a lot. It is very vivid and detailed. I can not imagine how long it took them to complete. As with most murals that I have reviewed, though, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 3 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area to maximize your time and trip.

"Hardware Pegboard" was added in 2013 by local artists Blice-Edwards (Christopher Blice & Jon Edwards). The intent was to create the look of a home tool wall (only a lot better organized than most I've seen!) Since Angie's List is a company that helps people find recommendations on home improvement services, the images of tools seemed an appropriate theme. The Stutz Sculpture is one of four auto-themed sculptures along the 96th Street corridor in Carmel…read more One of the "Classic Cars of Indiana," Stutz is one of my favorites in Carmel. It's possibly second to the Marmon Wasp - another one I absolutely love. All four classic car sculptures were created by Arlon Bayliss, a local artist whose design incorporates dozens of steel fabricated by Bo-Mar industries. Each vertical slice of steel creates an "ethereal light-permeable abstract form." At night, it's illuminated from within. The sculpture sits on a 5-foot Indiana limestone base. The sculpture is 16-feet-high and inspired by the Stutz's well-known "Ra" art deco hood ornament. I miss the days when we had really cool hood ornaments. The sculpture is inside the roundabout at 96th and Gray Road. I'm not one who's enamored with a lot of Carmel's public art, however, this is one I'll even drive out of the way a bit to go see. The sculpture was the last of the four "Classic Cars" to be installed and was completed in September 2024. I personally think it's worth the time to drive across 96th Street to catch all four. Plus, hey, think of all the roundabouts. Seriously, this is one of my favorites of the public art installations in Carmel roundabouts. It's definitely worth a visit or at least a drive-by.

They are back to back along 96th Street. This one looks like the hood ornament Stutz used and based on the sun god Ra. It is made of metal slices and pretty ingenious. I understand it also lights up, but I haven't personally seen it at night. I do enjoy looking at it as I circle it on my way through the roundabout.

With the passing of Dolly Parton, I had to stop by Amelia's to check out Muckrock's 2019 mural…read morelocated at the back of Amelia's in the Fletcher Place/Fountain Square area. The mural is of Dolly in her younger days, glammed up and tattooed with the tattoos reflecting a couple of Dolly's iconic moments - the award-winning film "9 to 5" and her famous song Jolene. It's hard to imagine anyone in Indy not knowing about MuckRock, aka Jules Muck, an England born street artist now based in Venice, California. Muck created the mural during an informal artists' residency here in Indy in 2019. Even with all the traffic issues in this area, it's pretty easy to be able to stop and check this out. It's a quick visit, of course, but this area has quite a few other places (including Amelia's) worth a stop. There are a handful of murals in Indy that really make me stop and smile when I see them. Dolly Door is most definitely one of them, and stopping today to check it out made me remember so much about her history and also a long ago interview I got to do with her during my college days. My family and I was in town from Lousiville on a weekend getaway while my daughter has cheer comp. Her competition was a few miles down the road at the convention center when we decided to take a post comp lounge at the popular Bluebeard and check out the public art in its surrounding area. On the rear of Bluebeard where the public parking is we seen this amazing piece. The artist did a wonderful job painting her likeness and the hit songs being tatted on the face was a fun and unwise touch very contrasting to Dolly herself. Overall we loved this piece. We seen a lot of public art while in town and this one will undoubtedly be our favorite and most memorable piece. I laugh every-time I look at it. Good stuff!

It is bright and blue, reminding us of Indiana's state flag. It covers the entire side of the building which is quite large. One drawback is that there are parking spots alongside this building causing the view to be obstructed rather frequently. Still eye-catching even with parked cars. I have stopped and taken pictures of my out of town friends in front of it and they love this little souvenir.

This piece is part of I-70's Corridor Public Art Project, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. It is the…read morework of then art student Kathryn Armstrong, who fabricated the piece in 2010 when the city was trying to get all pretty for the Super Bowl. It consists 34 pod-like forms of varying sizes and colors and is located off of I-70's exit 77 (Holt Road) . It is spread across the on and off ramps. This work was a collaborative effort between Herron's Center for Art, Design and Public Life, Eli Lilly and Company, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB). The table looking pieces are very colorful and Armstrong intended for them to naturally interact with the green space. The individual structures are made of Concrete and paint, anchored down by heavy duty steel cables. The grass around the pieces is somewhat maintained. I understand they cannot cut it every week, but the grass was high and was in need of a good trim when I was there. You can easily see the piece as you I driving down I-70 in either direction. It welcomes visitors driving from the airport to the city. The pieces are in good repair, but as you can expect with 12 year old painted surfaces, they are starting to lose their luster and fade. They are pretty sturdy. I was able to stand on top of one with no issues at all. If you desire to get a closer look, you could pull off at the exit, park on the shoulder get out and take a closer look. I would just caution you that it is an active road (be it an off ramp) and to be careful crossing the street. I had been by this piece many times and always wondered what it was and today was the day I decided to go in and check it out. This is a nice conversation piece that definitely demands your attention. It is a simple design that many of you may have past on a number of occasions. Anyway, as with most sculptures and art works that I visit, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. As I mentioned, please be very careful if you do stop. I recommend making this a part of a larger itinerary or visiting here on your way to somewhere else such as the airport.

I am unsure if visitors were very impressed by the effort. It does add a bit of color to the exit and I guess it is something different. The pretty pastel colors of these shapes remind me of Easter eggs. Especially since they are sprawled out in the grass. Like deformed eggs, or those that have been stepped on. I know that sounds bad, but I do like them. And isn't art anything that makes you feel something?

A collaboration between the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful was…read moresupported by the Lilly Endowment's funding to produce numerous art projects around Indy as part of the "Indy art & seek" program. One of the installations took advantage of some pre-existing concrete formations at the pull off near the Old GM Plant to look over the Rock Flat at White River. The bare concrete serves as a deterrent for motor vehicles from driving on the nearby trail (meant for pedestrians). When artist CS Stanley saw the raised rounded concrete shapes on the flat concrete surface, it seemed to resemble the shapes of a popular children's toy block/brick. So, the artist took advantage of the existing shapes and used primary colors to bring a lighter and brighter point of interest to the concrete and also help visitors find the observation area for overlooking the man made dam that creates white water on the White River. At the time of my initial review, I didn't understand the constraints of the art challenge which does not allow the modification of the structure. So the minimal artist involvement in creating the piece was not a lack of artistic vision, but restraints of the challenge which was to find existing structures and enhance them to call attention to their form and existing art. While I appreciate the brightness, I am not sure the artist did as much as he could to hold my visual interest . The primary color catches your eye, but for me, didn't hold my interest which was quickly drawn to the nearby view of the white water or the historical kiosks nearby with information. I would have liked the artist to add a bit more originality to the installation. I understand there were rules that the artist successfully followed. My rating is first to let know Yelpers there is a point of interest to check out and to give a sense of how I perceive the overall art when there are other pieces around town to check out if you have limited time. I appreciate when corporate and governments support art programs. Unfortunately, there are sometimes too many restrictions . I guess it is their money, they can do what they want. I get the sense that while appreciative of the funding, the artist might have enjoyed a bit more freedom to make the installation more original than it exists now. Review #3831

Since I sat at the Slippery Noodle watching the artists install this mural, I think I should give…read moremy 2 cents worth. Long overdue. I am one of those folks who know nothing about art and so I judge it by how it makes me feel. Generally I have three options, like, dislike and meh... This one falls into the like category mainly due to the colors used. I really enjoy this color scheme. It feels upbeat and reminds me of spring even so there are no flowers involved. It does brighten the underpass for sure. And every time i drive it makes me smile.

The mural gets its name from the 100 Rolls Royce employees that created it. It was painted in 2018 with the aid of local mural group, Big Car Collaborative as part of their day of volunteering. The mural depicts a repetitive, yet colorful Rolls-Royce jet engine. The mural is not painted directly on the wall. It is actually, painted on 24 - 8' x 4' foot wooden panels making the 60 ' x 24' mural. They were installed on the walls in 2019. It is a very colorful mural. The colors surrounding the center axis of each engine randomly shift. Those shifts in color are suppose to evoke a sense of the circular motion of the engine. Unfortunately, I did not feel it. There is metered parking near the mural or if you wont be long, there are spots reserved for IMPD, that are right in front of the mural, that you could probably pull over and get out and take a quick look. Unfortunately, for this mural, I have seen a ton of public art and compared to the bulk of what I have seen, this one is ok, middle of the road for me. Anyway, as with most murals I have reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 3 minutes. You should consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals and attractions in the area, such as the Major Taylor Mural or John Wooden statue, to maximize your time and trip.
