With one child born with cerebral palsy every 15 hours, it is one of the most common physical…read moredisabilities in Australia. Currently the government gives approximately 18 CENTS of support per week to each family with a child who has cerebral palsy. It can be hard on the family, especially for the hip pocket. Supporting someone with cerebral palsy can cost up to $100,000 per year. Sometimes even more, depending on the level of care the person needs. The Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland are the first port of call for a lot of families and individuals living with CP and other physical disabilities. They are able to provide carers, social services, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and specialised equipment for those in need. The Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland run art workshops and other social events too. If you've ever heard of Picnic In The Park, you're already familiar with the The Cerebral Palsy League. Because The Cerebral Palsy League is a not for profit, it also needs funding, which is where you come into things. They don't have the volunteers to door knock, or set up stands in shopping centres. They fundraise over the phone and via the post. Give these people your money. Even if it's a dollar, it all counts. With ongoing support, those with cerebral palsy have made leaps and bounds. We can help those with no voice to speak, we can help those who can't walk take their first steps. We can help to create a caring community. If you would like to donate to Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland (and you should), please call 07 3358 8096.

Of course with their growth came the need for a HQ and here, amongst Arts Queensland, Helen and her team have found a nook to call their own. While the majority of the time it is home to their business operations they have started to host a series of workshops with BrisStyle members and on any given occasion you can, for example, attend a charm bracelet workshop led by EachToOwn, take your little ones along to a craft workshop, or learn the art of modern calligraphy. Whichever way you come across BrisStyle, our city is a little brighter and more vibrant for their dedication and passion for the hand made!

As part of their vision, they run community projects like the silk scarf painting workshop coordinated for women in Kelvin Grove's Afghan community, in effort to develop and empower diverse communities. As a fashion based collective, they explore how to create inclusive and sustainable communities through innovative fashion design, exhibition and curation. They have a whole bunch of really cool events happening on a regular basis- the current one being 'life drawing with clothes on', where women model kooky combinations of threads and have an audience draw them. It's beneficial to everyone- to the artist who gets to draw something different than naked bodies, to the amateur fashion student who is learning how to speedily sketch an idea, to the model who may be testing life modelling waters out in a less confronting manner than what is otherwise offered, to the clothes that get a fine coat hanger to display themselves on. This is how the Stitchery works. It is one of my favourite new artist run initiatives to come out of Brisbane. Check out their website regularly. There is an abundance of cool things to join up for here. How to make LED bikini's, upcycling workshops and more.
