YMT isn't exactly where I started Muay Thai, but I learned most of the art from PC Ilir at York…read moreUniversity Muay Thai (YUMT), who is also one of the main instructors at YMT. The reality is that the YMT/YUMT/ Kru Yai Jen's firm approach to getting the foundations right will make you a far better fighter than people from other gyms who started around the same time as you. After two to three years of regular training at YMT, your skill level and the finesse of your movement will far surpass those of fighters from other gyms with similar experience. I spar at different gyms from time to time, and the difference in fundamentals is obvious, from footwork and handwork to kicks (especially the kicks). Krus and fighters at other gyms have often mistaken me for someone with experience in the ring, which couldn't be further from the truth The one thing I wish YMT did more is share knowledge with members who aren't on the fight team. Sure, many people are there for general wellness and conditioning, but to me, understanding flow and fight rhythm is just as important to the art as foundational movements. Some gyms let people who aren't fighters to join fight camp level classes, and they tend to produce fighters with more experience reading reactions and playing the game. Too many folks can throw a one-punch combo but can't react once they get barraged. That said, what I got from YMT and YUMT was invaluable. Even after a year and half away from training due to constant moving and many injuries, I've had no trouble shadowboxing, sparring, and training again. With the strong foundations YMT gave me, Muay Thai really is like riding a bike: the skills and the love stay with you, forever. Beyond the amazing PC Ilir, YMT has an amazing team of krus and PCs, and it produces elite competitors in MT competition. It also offers a wide range of programs, including women-only and family classes, which is always a green flag. If you're looking for a great workout and want to learn the real foundations of Muay Thai, YMT is definitely the place to go. You'll fall in love with Muay Thai, and before you know it, you'll be booking a flight to Thailand to train.

I only intended to sign up so i could do something during the winter months, but i enjoyed it so much I ended up signing for the whole year. Great way to loose some unwanted weight too and keep it off. Lost 20+ lbs . Dont take my word for it, give it a try!! cya there, BJ :)

Definitely a great place for a beginner who is looking to shed some lbs and is bored of the traditional gym, but definitely not a fight gym. Or if it is a fight gym they need to re evaluate their levels for classes. Very little technique but more about warm up, and cheesey burn out at the end. If the 90 min class maybe 30 min was actual pad work and it was beginner stuff. 3 punch combo with push kick. Would have got a better work out on a heavy bag at a local YMCA.

Cons: - You really do need to buy gloves, even if it's a trial class because the equipment (spare gloves) smells really awful. And no, it's not the smell of sweat, it's a scent that's rather indescribable. - The claim for TKMT is that no one is judgemental however the instructor said I looked horrible. I don't think she meant it to be offensive, but I was embarrassed since the whole Level 1 class turned their heads to look at me. I think the word was just a negative connotation is all. I suggest you bring a friend for the first trial for a comfortable experience.

Every class requires boxing gloves; you can either bring your own or purchase/rent them from Her's. Gloves go for $32/pair and rentals are $2 per class. Each person has a punching target (Bob) used to punch and kick during the class. The instructors are very motivating and encourage the class really well when we go through the moves. They are also aware of that everyone is coming into this class is at a different level and accommodate with modifications for the moves. There is a lot of importance given to form, footwork and using the right body parts to increase power in your punches and kicks (to prevent injuries). Each workout class is 45 mins and during that time, the instructors take you through a warm up, full workout including cardio and strength training as well as a cool down. The cardio and strength components vary depending on which workout you choose. The website describes each workout really well and also tells you what level of cardio and strength is in them so you're prepared before you start. There is a mix of cardio (jumping jacks, burpees) as well as strength training moves using weights in each workout. One part of Her's that I really enjoy is the online booking system. Their calendar view of classes is really easy to navigate through and allows you to book classes up to 1 week in advance. I'd definitely recommend Hers if you're looking for a fun switch to your regular workouts!

Do Not enter a long-term contract with these predators!…read more I paid a one-year membership and started training in the gym last Sep. Unfortunately, I got a bad knee injury during the training just less than a month out. I had to rest for weeks before trying again, and just realized that I could not continue. Hoping that I could recover soon, I did not cancel my membership as they have this "save time" allowing members to carry over the missing training time and extend after the contract expiration date. This was a HUGE mistake. In Mar 2023, I knew that I had to move out of Toronto in May due to a job change, and started contacting them for a refund by email and phone. I contacted them in the next month, none of my emails was replied, phone calls were rarely answered. In frustration, I went to the facility in person. To my dismay, the admin person accused me of showing up without an appointment, and their manager Joshua show no compassion after knowing my situation. Despite having trained for only five weeks in total, they refused to refund me for the entire duration, claiming that the "save time" policy didn't apply to refunds. They only agreed to refund me for the months after I left Toronto, which was four months since May. I have trained in multiple MMA gyms before, and I can confidently say that this is the worst one I've experienced. The only saving grace was the wonderful coaches, but they cannot compensate for the gym's predatory practices. I am utterly disappointed and feel cheated. I sincerely hope others do not make the same mistake I did and steer clear of this gym.
