My mother has dementia and is severely impaired but both my parents strongly resisted needed care. Things peaked to a crisis and we had to have our mother admitted to the hospital until we could find her safe care. Freedom Point was the first place we toured and we were stunned at how beautiful, the facility and how engaged the residents appeared. They were able to admit our mother in just a few days and from the minute she walked through the door, she hasn't stopped smiling. The worked with us on every step and were patient and caring. They claim to be 5 star,…read morebut if you actually research it, they have a 2-star staffing rating, which staffing should be the most important factor if you don't want your loved one sitting in their waste for long periods. Their staff rate turnover is 71.6% which is "significantly above the national average"; 18 health code violations and $30k in fines paid. There are some amazing staff members, but unless your loved one is in their section, it's probably not going to be good. I visit weekly and have heard a lot of complaints amongst staff. They are over-worked and under-paid\under-appreciated. It honestly makes me sick to my stomach to have witnessed\seen what actually goes on. PLEASE research closely before believing the 5-star rating.

Staff are expected to work extremely short-staffed while receiving no help from the management team. Residents are forced to sit in their own feces for hours. They do not have the proper supplies to provide adequate care. Staff are told that they are using too many supplies, so they are instructed to provide in continence care with one ply toilet paper. For some reason, the director of nursing, Sarah, seems to think she can override a doctor's order to send a patient to the hospital who is in an unstable condition. It's all about the mighty dollar with this place. Just ask the Administrator, Sabrina, she loves the phrase "it's a business". Nurses show up to work drunk, CNAs show up smelling like a weed farm, and they sweep abuse under the rug like it's nothing. Allowing staff members who physically & verbally abuse residents to continue working. I pray that the people in charge of this place never have to experience the kind of care they give.

I strongly encourage anyone looking for a GOOD job, to come to Onyx. We have MANY employees who are amazing to work with. We are a true "family" in every sense of the word.

We had an agency for a couple of years that was absolutely horrid! I knew they were awful, but kept hoping they'd improve. Finally we had enough and I happened upon Onyx. I can not express how thankful I am! This agency is all I had hoped for and more. The owner is a wonderful lady with excellent credentials. Unlike the last agency we had, she puts her caregivers through up to date training, and they are all so reliable and professional. When I call I'm treated with respect, so unlike the last agency. They were always unpleasant and hurried. They are nurses at Onyx, and their experience in the field certainly shows Her aide has been outstanding, and works extremely hard to help my mom. The last agency all the aides wanted was to be taken to a restaurant or watch television. I have been desperately hoping for a little help with my mom, and Onyx has provided more than a little, they are life savers!!!

I've got to say I was quite impressed at the level of care they are getting. Their clothes were clean, hair was washed, they looked well-groomed (haircuts and shaved), and they got new glasses. When I arrived, I was surprised to find that they weren't even in their room. They were out on the porch enjoying the scenery and landscaping. My grandpa was telling me about all of the birds he's been watching for the past few weeks. I haven't seen them so happy in such a long time. I'm forever thankful for Oakwood Garden of Deland. PLUS: This is a very secured nursing home. There wasn't a single exit that didn't need a code to get through. This is wonderful since my grandpa has dementia and is always talking about "Escaping Jail." The Bad: The aisle ways are constantly crowded with residents, carts, and personnel. Its a challenge to walk through.

Tammie was truly amazing, patiently explaining all of the bureaucratic monstrosity that is the American health care system, from HMOs to Medicare. She was highly knowledgeable, resourceful, and extremely personable. I honestly don't know what I would have done without her; she walked me through all the steps I needed to get the home care set up and was compassionate about the many obstacles I faced due to my father's terrible HMO. She helped me with getting my dad into his primary care and assisted me with all the steps needed to get his home health referral. The rest of the staff at Choice Matters is also excellent; my dad loved his physical therapist, Allen, who helped him get back on his feet, literally. My dad is a misanthropic curmudgeon who doesn't like most people, but he looked forward to his visits with Allen and was able to walk again with his support. The name of the agency really reflects that "Choice Matters" when you choose a caregiver. I highly recommend!
