Our favorite places to camp in VA are state parks and this is one of our very favorites. We've been…read morehere several times and even have a favorite spot :). This is one of only 2 state parks in the state with full hookups (I wish so many others would get on board with that). That being said, make reservations early! Most sites are fairly level and all have fire rings and picnic tables. Most sites also accommodate larger RVs, especially the C loop (the one with the sewer hookups). We drag a 32' fifth wheel and have no problems, and we've seen several larger rigs (including big class As) get in and out with no trouble at all. The beautiful thing about this park is all of the many activities it offers. There is lots of history here (research the concrete ships - they are amazing). Several well marked trails cross cross the park (and most all are level and rated easy to navigate) - our dogs love them. During the season, there is a nice swimming beach and you can kayak out to the ships. Fishing is big here as well and the boat ramp is well kept with ample boat trailer parking. Again, one of the nicest VA state parks and a good home base for adventurers on the ES. Do yourself a favor and skip the KOA down the road (they are packed in like sardines) and book here. Just do it early!

The site is notable for some abandoned ships offshore that look like interesting ruins to tour by boat. I experienced no great difficulty getting in and this is one of a finite number of parks on the bay side of the Eastern shore, so it is a good place to check out.

Totally worth the hikes, but the beach trail down to the waterfront with all the breakwaters is about 250 stairs. And STEEP! It looks like they are building a road down to there right from the campground that will take you right there. You can drive down on an actual road but where's the fun in that? The camper sights are nice and mostly level. In campground A, most face into the forest so you don't see your neighbors. And it's the closest to the beach trails. Not all sights in campground A have water and electric so check b4 booking. We had site a26 and it was good. But the a sites (1-7) are the best. We did both hikes in one day, so there isn't much of anything else to do. Unless you love to just hike. In which case there are plenty of other trails. The staff is very friendly. There are no public restrooms close.

When I was driving in I noticed campgrounds but unsure if there are cabins. They have a nice playground and bathrooms close by. Near the visitor center there is also a Discovery Center however we did not stop by. The ranger let us know that they have more things to look at. We came to check out the Fossil Beach and found a small shark tooth. The rangers were very helpful and kept my kids very engaged while sharing all about the cool things this park has to offer. Inside the visitor center you can find snacks, water fountains, restrooms, air conditioning, a neat gift shop, turtles, and snakes. Ask about their Jr. Ranger program/booklet. It is very kid friendly even for older toddlers. Definitely make a day trip out of this park. In addition to shark teeth hunting you can also swim in the river. Many people were here with umbrellas and towels. It is about a 0.5 mile hike to get to Fossil beach.

The path to the beach was so beautiful that I was looking at the surroundings more than I should have when I tripped and fell. My ankle was hurt and I couldn't put any weight on it. A big thank you the woman who helped me on one side while my husband was on my other side to the cart than could t make it to our location. A big shout out to the ranger who came in a cart that took us back to our car. Unfortunately, we didn't make it down to the beach, but looking forward to returning upon my healing. It's a sprain with a fracture.

The beach most…read morepeople go for is small with "muddy bay sand", and you're not supposed to go below (or above) the cliffs. That said: there's nice photo possibilities along the wetlands, and much more diverse topography than on the eastern shore. Near the parking lot are picnic areas and a playground, and there's a lot of trail mileage (better for runners than hikers IMO). Other than the boardwalk along the wetlands (final segment), try to skip the red trail - that's where all the families will be trudging, many whom haven't walked 4 miles RT in quite some time judging by the expressions I saw. You can easily combine trails for some variety or more distance. The trails are a mix of sandy-natural, gravel and boardwalk, grass, or natural dirt. Their design seems an after-thought (more for access, less for "enjoyable hiking"). Note the colocated hunting club at the north end of the park, and wear a safety vest hiking if it's hunting season. If I lived nearby, I'd be here regularly. Lots of parking. There's no gate, so no worry about being locked in at dusk. Places to go for dinner afterwards in Solomons. But as a destination, it was one-and-done.

Much more availability of parking is at the Mariners Museum. The Noland Trail is not on public land, it's private and donated for public use. The trails snakes around the James River with beautiful scenery of woods and water. The trails snakes around is well marked. Every bridge has a marker, there are a lot of them. What impressed me the most was the trail is engineered. There is a massive amount of drainage to keep it dry. The elevations have wood ties to help with climbing. It's the most engineered trail I've ever hiked. You have options with length, but it's approximately 5-6 miles. There are no trash cans, or restrooms. However, the Mariners Museum has both and they welcome hikers. When talking to several friends about the Noland Trail they are unaware of its existence. Don't snooze on this trail and enjoy with the warmer weather.

Whether you're biking, walking, or just looking to unwind outdoors, the Noland Trail is a gem!
