The Good -- The PTA. It's improved. A lot. It's now run by a responsible group that is really committed to raising funds and implementing quality programs for the kids. The Mediocre -- The parents. With the exception of a few, the parent involvement is pretty lame. Same group of parents that volunteer at every event. The BAD -- The Principal. One of the worst I've ever seen. She attempts to run the school like a military base. She has her sights set on climbing the LAUSD ladder and, clearly, every decision she makes is geared toward furthering her personal goals as opposed to creating a nurturing, fun, inspiring environment for the kids. And this isn't just my opinion. Every teacher, parent and student hates her.

They constantly seem to turn their face or say nothing when students are assaulted. This lack of care by them results in more violent actions (just read recent comments). My child has been punched and I've been called and told that it's no problem and that the student that hit my child is actually in more pain because of the way they hit my child or that my should have not been near the situation so he wouldn't have gotten hit. Since when is a victim the aggressor? Seems wise to teach this. Recently, my child was choked in class and when the teacher was informed of the situation, nothing was done. This is the constant theme at Woodlake. If you care for your child's safety, it's best to take them to a school that will prioritize providing them a safe learning environment.

Woodlake Elementary Community Charter - Woodland Hills (LAUSD) - Safety Concern / Bullying Not…read moreAddressed I'm posting this as a serious concern about student safety. My 8-year-old nephew has experienced repeated physical bullying on campus, including being slapped and pushed, primarily during lunch and after-school/dismissal. Our family has reported these incidents and asked for meaningful intervention, but we have not seen effective action to stop the behavior, hold the offenders accountable, or prevent it from continuing. A school should be a place where children feel safe and protected, especially during unstructured times like lunch and dismissal when supervision matters most. Right now, we do not feel the school is taking the necessary steps to ensure a safe environment. We are asking Woodlake to implement clear, consistent measures immediately--stronger supervision in the areas where incidents are happening, a written safety plan for affected students, and prompt follow-through when physical aggression occurs. No child should have to worry about being hurt at school.

I will say, however, that Viewpoint is as close to "perfect" as a school could be. It is 6 stars in my book. I can't say enough about how the school is run, the individualized care, the facilities, the programs, curriculum. My son started in 7th grade and he is now is 11th and I literally have a smile on my face when I picture him being at Viewpoint. Easily, what stands out the most is the fact everyone in the faculty and administration seem to know my kid, personally...they are invested in all the kids..they aren't anonymous...my son feels like he is in a family type environment where people truly care about his welfare inside and outside of the classroom. That is a very rare characteristic for a school. I can't think on one single aspect of my son's education, from academics to administration, to sports, etc., that have not been handled with the highest level of care and professionalism. And, he has built a tremendous friend base at Viewpoint...definitely his second family. If Atticus Finch were to teach at a school...he just might pick Viewpoint. I will look back on Viewpoint and say it was perhaps the best money I have ever spent...and easily one of the proudest contributions that I have made to my son's young life. His mom and I got this one right!

The school is more than just a place of learning--it's a supportive, close-knit community that genuinely shows up for one another, especially during times of need. Father Steve and Mrs. Lutz truly make it feel like every one of the 600 students is their own child. That level of care and leadership is something you don't find everywhere. Over the years, we've seen incredible improvements across the campus--from beautiful new landscaping and enhanced safety measures to expanded programs in arts, music, and computer science. The addition of mandatory Spanish is another example of how the school continues to grow and prepare students for the future. The teachers and staff are deeply invested in each child's growth, both academically and personally. My older daughter built a strong foundation here that has carried her through high school with great success--she is now applying to some of the most prestigious universities in the country, and we credit so much of that to her early years at St. Mel. We are incredibly grateful to be part of such a caring and faith-filled community.

The second thing I noticed was their great security. From the outside you can not see the kids unless you are definitely on school campus. Upon meeting the director, Phyllis Schneider, and listening to their "mission statement" I knew they would be a perfect fit for us. Seven months in I still feel their philosophies are an extension of what we do at home. Learning happens through experiences and play, not sessions and lessons(boring to a toddler). At this age I feel it's important to make learning fun so the child will want to continue the process. That's what SM does. Their policies may feel stringent to some: no candy, no juice, no sweets, not even on birthdays. There is a protocol to dropping your child off and saying goodbye which is set to ease the children without mom and dad and establish a routine. To me, all this has been such a relief. There is a system in plan and a strong director to execute it. Without a strong director there is no strong program. I took Phyllis' STEP parenting class. It was amazing. It's made my relationship with my child much much better. Phyllis is strong but she also gives us parents the tools to be strong parents with happy toddlers/children. I've seen my child blossom at SM. There are days I see it from the time I drop her off to when I pick her up. The teachers are kind, helpful and attentive. The couple of times we've had bumps or bruises (bc kids will be kids) the teachers have a report ready and can tell me how it happened. I've never felt that my child is not looked after. We've really enjoyed the faculty and families at St. Mel Preschool.

Mrs. Lopez and Mrs.Sanchez are truly a dream team..they have this beautiful balance of warmth, patience, structure, and genuine love for the kids that is hard to put into words. The academic curriculum is incredible, our son is learning so much in kindergarten. He literally can't wait to get to class every morning And he's not usually that kid, which speaks volumes to me about how amazing this school is and how safe and happy he feels here. They offers so many clubs/enrichment opportunities, and fun events that there's always something exciting happening. This community is truly something special, the teachers are genuinely nurturing, and the staff goes above and beyond in every way. & Now that my daughter is in the preschool we're having the same experience. What also stands out is the sense of community. The school consistently puts on great events and activities that make the children excited to be involved and help families feel connected. It does not feel like just a school, it feels like a place where staff genuinely want the children to succeed. Go figure, here is also where I got classified as 'gifted.' I ate many a cupcake to celebrate my classmates' birthdays, crossed the Charlie Brown painted bridge that kept students from walking in the street to reach the ice cream truck, giggled with my friends during the Sex Ed lesson that presented me with my first maxi pad and deodorant stick, and got pummeled by hugs from my cheering female classmates after beating the most athletic boy in our class at a handball tournament. So basically, I had the typical generally wholesome educational experience you would hope your child receive in elementary school. To its credit, Tarzana Elementary had some of the most dedicated, genial and most effective teachers I have ever known. They were confidence boosters, taught values as well as math and handwriting and worked very hard to make learning fun and engaging. I stayed after school until my mom could pick me up and during that time there were always adults to facilitate a game of kickball or baseball and make sure nobody got hurt. An older boy decided to bully me after I first transfered and when my parents complained to the school he was immediately disciplined and still couldn't look me in the eye when our paths crossed many years later. That first experience was pretty telling about the involvement the people running and working in this school chose to have in the lives of their students and the environment they were trying to foster. I am happy to say at least with this little girl, the efforts had a lasting impact.
