Do not hire Lewis Williams or Flexer Law. I hired him for a family law matter in Davidson County,…read moreand in my experience it was the worst professional service I have ever paid for.
His paralegal drafted and filed a 16-count contempt petition in my case under his name. It was obvious to me he had never read my parenting plan or the contempt petition his own office filed: 8 of those counts had to be withdrawn. When I pointed out what the plan actually said, Lewis wrote to his own paralegal, "If this is what the parenting plan really says, and we're going to have to change that language in the petition again." Half the petition was gone by the time it was amended. That's what you get at $475 an hour.
The drafts they sent me to approve had basic facts wrong. I went through every one line by line and sent back annotated corrections, correct dates, documentation, and timelines. Then they called me again and again asking the same questions. It was clear to me nobody read a word of it, and most of my corrections never made it into the filings. I was doing my own lawyer's job and paying him for the privilege.
He pushed me toward things I didn't want to do and never explained why, including asking for more than I was ever seeking. In my opinion that made the case uglier, dragged it out for months, and cost me a lot of time and money.
One count was thrown out because his paralegal put the abbreviation of a resort on the petition where my daughter's initials belonged. He then tried to blame me for his paralegal's mistake. A legal citation was wrong too, and opposing counsel used it to try to get every count dismissed. Nobody at the firm caught either one. All 8 counts were dismissed.
The worst part: I gave him the key evidence in my case, records from the U.S. State Department, at our very first meeting. They directly contradicted statements made to the State Department. He sat on them for five months. Twenty-one days before the hearing his office told me they couldn't be used without authentication and asked ME to handle it. Nine days out, his paralegal wrote that she didn't know how and there wasn't time. I googled it and sent them the exact process the same afternoon. It took me five minutes. I called and asked him to move the hearing. He didn't. The evidence was never used.
He asked me how to pronounce my daughter's name, which is two syllables, then got it wrong for an entire six-hour hearing. He asked again before the next hearing and got it wrong for four more hours. When things went badly he sat there with his arms crossed. To me he looked like he had already quit on my case.
Opposing counsel, Rachel Upshaw of Miller Upshaw Family Law, was prepared, organized, and professional, and she ran circles around him. Watching the two of them side by side, I knew I had hired the wrong lawyer.
After losing, he moved to withdraw. While he was still my attorney of record, he told me in writing he would not file anything else for me and that I should file it myself. So I did, with no lawyer, and I got my daughter's initials right, something Lewis and his paralegals could not do.
He bills $475 an hour, and over the course of this case he billed me almost $30,000. In my opinion his work wasn't worth a third of that. If you need a family law attorney, hire Rachel Upshaw, Morgan Smith, or honestly anyone else before Lewis Williams. You know a law firm is terrible when I'm recommending my ex-wife's lawyer over Flexer Law.
