Dan dan noodles are a must. They are sweet, fast and reasonably priced. Dumplings are yummy too.

It's not a fancy place, it's cramped and there's little room to sit apart from awkward stools, but for me that's by the by because the noodles are amazing. I've never been a fan of noodle dishes because they've struck me as boring. It was in equal measure out of laziness and hunger that I walked in here a few days ago, as it was peak hour and I just couldn't face the checkout queues at the store to pick up something for dinner. I ordered one sweet box and one hot box (or similarly-named dishes, I don't recall exactly), and I was wowed. Maybe it's in part the fact that this is a new(ish) dish for me, but the flavour just sucked me in (don't mind a lame pun). The hot box in particular had this tangy, spicy sauce going on, kind-of 'soy-saucy'... it was just divine. I couldn't stop thinking about it so I went back for more this evening. I'm no authority on dishes of this kind, I don't have much to go on by way of comparison, and I'm sure there are probably better noodle dishes out there... but these ones really hit the spot for me. I see this being a regular dinner option for some time to come... possibly until it develops into a minor issue ;)

Good because they don't have to turn the table for the next group that's already waiting at the door. Bad because I have to question if everything is made fresh today. For today though. I ordered my usual selection of yum char musts. And the beef tripe is probably the most flavourful that I have had in Auckland. That been said, everything else were all just on par with everywhere else. The price is also very reasonable. I am sorry that I can't give you a breakdown, because I don't even know what they cost individually. Lol. But I paid $38 for a mix of 7 yum char items. So it works out to be 5 and a bit per? And if you know yum char, then that's 1 top, 3 large and 3 medium selections.

There were at least 20+ types of dishes that was circulated around. For four people, we ended up spending $80 for 13 items (incl. 10% holiday surcharge). Overall, the parking was convenient, the variety definitely there, and the cleanliness and atmosphere were good! I'd come back again if I'm on the shore. The egg tarts were good, and the shiau mai was good too. Also, unlike the other yum char places in Auckland, the portion is four items! (other places only have 3 portions) Price Breakdown: Tea $1 per person Medium is $4.80 Large is $5.80 Special is $6.50

It has changed since we had been by before, but never gone in, and was now open under new management, name and only just it's 4th day. To celebrate the opening they had decorated the entry with floral arrangements which was a nice touch. Once in the restaurant , one will notice a quite sizable tank for lobster etc, a very clean and tidy interior, a few other ornaments like vases and the unusual one of a grandfather clock....I have never seen one of them before in a chinese restaurant. Something different .....a little strange but for me did not ruin the interior outlook at all. Service was good, with greeting on entering and quickly presented with menu at table. We ordered the Taiwanese soy sauce chicken ( 三杯鸡 ) and the Hong Kong style fried fish ( 避风塘炒鱼 ) . Soup of the day is bought to the table when you first sit down. That's nothing flash, soup with veges and meat bone . Is common to give such soups to patrons in cantonese restaurants. Our food came out , was up to scratch...so much so that we nearly never had to takeaway the left overs. The price is a little high though. But still worth the expense. Chances we would come back

However, if it's damn tasty Chinese food in massive portions for sweet bugger all money, then you've definitely come to the right place!! Judging by how full this place gets these days, word of mouth has spread - plenty of people are down for cheap and cheerful! Gather your friends or family, bring a bottle down (BYO only, no drinks menu - no corkage!!!), and get a few of the big dishes to share. Everything's great (and nothings more than $10-$15), but I recommend the salt and pepper squid, the beans, the satay beef (comes out sizzling!) and the sweet and sour pork. Awesome awesome place, just make sure you book ahead on a Fri/Sat night and don't expect great service or ambiance.

This place is a regular for me (they're literally just up the road from where I'm currently…read morestaying), and over time I've sampled the better part of the menu. It's a bit difficult to give an overall rating, as I have varying opinions on their different dishes. But on the whole I feel they deserve a solid 4 stars. We're currently going through a fried-rice phase, so that's dinner at least several times per week. They do a good job of it, generous portion sizes and succulent cuts of meat, particularly the chicken. I do find some of their fried-rice options a tad bland (easily remedied with a dollop of soy sauce, which we always have on hand), but their curry and satay options have more flavour to them. When I'm planning to eat with my dad, as I often do, I opt for the Singapore noodles, which are his favourite. They're very tasty, I find. As for their 'standard' noodles, they're also flavoursome, and certainly very filling, though a little too much so for my liking. They're quite heavy and 'gloopy'. Be prepared for a food-coma if you overindulge! But the flavours are certainly there. It's a good, hearty dish for the wintertime, though I feel I'll be giving it a miss in the coming months as it's just too heavy for a summer meal. We also occasionally opt for their fried options (fish and chips, et cetera), which are fine, well executed, nothing to write home about either way. I tried their sweet and sour pork a couple of times, and came away underwhelmed, which was disappointing as this tends to be my favoured option at places like this. It was decidedly more 'sour' than 'sweet,' with an unpleasant 'tang' to it. And... no rice!! I would think it'd be standard for s/s dishes to come with rice, as they're sorely in need of something to 'cut' their rich flavour. Other places I frequent all provide rice as a matter of course with s/s options. Service is always pleasant enough, somewhat matter-of-factly but then this place is always bustling and certainly doesn't need to pander to customers.

But they have dived in here with something quite awesome. Artwok is split over two floors. The downstairs area is more casual and where you would head after work as you climb up on a barstool. Where upstairs has a very cool large aquarium and more formal seating. On a busy night is just as cool as downstairs in a different way and at least you can hear your neighbour speak. I love the calligraphy brush wall and how the whole upstairs on a balmy night opens out onto a deck with more tables to make the most of this short NZ summer. Having only 5 in our group worked well in that we got to sample the whole menu as the waiter (who was very tentative) suggested us sharing at a cost of $40pp. Great value and I really was full when I left. Complimentary Sliced potato with chilli was a good starting kick. The Szechuan pepper flavour of the tender Wakanui beef was not my favourite dish personally just because of the flavour but others loved it. The north eastern sweet and sour pork is popular, and great -- crunchy batter dressed with a palm sugar syrup. Other dishes we had were Vermicelli and pork salad, Wontons and dumplings, Pork belly in flatbread, chicken with cashews with chilli's you are not supposed to eat. The Hand pulled Chinese cabbage was something I have never tried and was lovely and fresh with its ginger punch to clear those other strong flavours. Pork belly and eggplant were the only things on the menu we didn't try and so alas I have to go back to Artwok to sample them. Such a shame! I'm not a beer drinker but had to try the Good George Brewing Sparkling Ale which I actually loved and what made it more novel was the science beacon it was served in. This place is worth the trip to Takapuna for sure.
