Bash-Pepper left a lot of debris around when they put a new roof on my house, but otherwise, the roof is fine. The problem is the customer service and communication. After they sent me a proposal, I asked some questions about it, but didn't hear back for weeks. Months later, they finally came and replaced the roof. I asked them for a receipt, which my homeowners' insurance company requires before they will renew my policy. Absolute radio silence. They haven't responded to a single one of my e-mails. When I call on the phone, I always reach a call center. The staff there are perfectly nice, and have taken multiple messages, but the actual office at Bash-Pepper has never called me back. I even stopped by their office mid-morning on a Thursday, and nobody was at the office. I hope nothing goes wrong with the roof, because I doubt I'd ever be able to get ahold of them for repairs. read more

Absolutely Horrible! Do not recommend. They were fast to come out and give us a full gutter quote and over two months later the job is not done and we did not have the courtesy of being updated at all. When I inquired multiple times, the last time I was told "oh I was told that job was complete two weeks ago." Wrong, no one ever came, called or cared. I wrote a previous review of Bash-Pepper, about how they charged me $500 to nail in a nail into a single shingle. So they ended up negotiating with me and the owner of the company, and at the end of the day, after much discussion about ethical behavior, the owner knocked the bill down to zero. I think its only fair to say that. However, I seriously wish that in nailing down the nail the worker, Marcus, had not jumped heavily -- full weight -- repeatedly on our old roof, telling my husband that there will "surely be more nails rising, needing to be fixed." And he added, of course, that we need a new roof, and it would cost $15,000. I suspect that we will need a new roof much sooner that we would have before meeting Marcus. read more

Bash Pepper put a new roof on our home in Dec 2020, and did an excellent job, great communication from Kent Pettyjohn from start to finish. Then in June 2021 we had a large tree crash through our new roof. Once again Bash Pepper came through in a timely manner repairing the roof sheeting from the multiple holes, then completely re-roofing half of the house, and put up new gutters. Even with all the supply and labor issues that are out there, the job was completed in a timely as high quality manner. Be careful when using Bash Pepper. When bidding the job their owner/manager will be charming and will likely be the low bid. But for us, they did not deliver. Our roof was damaged in the hailstorm of July 2020. The new roof was installed in August 2020. The contract specified replacement of the metal drip edge, but they did not do that work, instead leaving the old material in place. When I caught that error, they returned the next day to replace the drip edge. The contract specified removal of the old shingles and nails and they did pick up the materials on the ground, but did not clean the many loose nails on the new roof, so in the weeks following nails fell time and time again from the roof to the driveway. They removed the old damaged gutters in August 2020, but have not yet - a year later - returned to install new gutters despite my many calls and letters. One full year and the job remains incomplete. read more

I used this company three times: to re-line the built-in rain gutters of my Victorian home, to re-coat the porch roof, and to build a cricket around my chimney. Their prices were competitive, but I was not satisfied with two of the three jobs. My first call to them was about leaks in the porch roof gutters. Re-lining the gutters and re-sealing the roof was their prescription. It cost $1000 but the leaks continued. First they denied that it was leaking, suggesting that I needed to clean my gutters more often. (Huh?) Then they offered to do my other roofing job (building the cricket around my chimney) at a good price and to fix the first job at no charge. The estimator said they would do "whatever it takes" to get it right. As it happens they didn't do anything. They did the chimney cricket but never touched the porch again. Then they didn't return my messages. Now I have had two other roofers out to try (again) to fix the leaking porch roof. Both of the other roofers are skeptical of the materials chosen by Bash-Pepper for the job in the first place. One asked me why I chose a cheap roofing material that wouldn't last -- this was suggested as the best strategy by Bash-Pepper. The other asked why my re-lined gutters had big gaps in the lining. He put his finger into a gap to show me. I'd stay away from Bash-Pepper. read more

My insurance company assigned Bash-Pepper Roofing to me to tarp my roof after it had been damaged by a falling tree. When the team arrived, I asked them to wear masks because I have some health issues. Jesse told me that "he didn't have wear one because he doesn't have to wear a mask if he is outside". One of his colleagues pulled his shirt over his face, and the other just stared at me. None of them wore masks while they were on my property and Jesse consistently got closer to me than 6 feet, even when I tried to back away. When I tried to show them where the job was, they ignored me and immediately set up a ladder on the wrong side of my three-story house. When they climbed up and saw that they were on the wrong side, I tried to talk with them again, and they ignored me and took the ladder to the other side of the house, but they couldn't find a place to put the ladder because of tree debris. . Finally, I YELLED, "Excuse me? You are on my land. Can I show you something?" Jesse made a rude comment back, but his coworker told him to listen to me. I then walked them around to the back of the house to show them where THERE WERE STAIRS that provided direct and easy access to the project. Jesse looked momentarily embarrassed, but pretty much ignored me again after that. They got the porch tarped. I went in the house to get my credit card, and when I came back out, they were gone. I never got an invoice or any contact information about who to call to get one. I can't help but wonder if they ignored me because I am female. While the Bash-Pepper Roofing team was on my property, the (male) tree cutters I have been working with stopped by to drop something off, and Jesse was very respectful when he spoke to them. One of the tree cutters told me that he was shocked at the way I was being treated. After they left, I called my insurance agent and told her that I will not allow anyone from Bash-Pepper Roofing on my property ever again. read more

We've had several roofing companies come out to "repair" our shingles over the last year. We live out in the country and have trouble with high winds/storms blowing our shingles off. During the last storm we ended up with some water damage and needed someone to come out fast. I called and left messages for all of the local roofing companies and Bash/Pepper was the first one to answer the phone and schedule an appointment. They were able to come out the next day. We had a leak into our garage attic. I called Cord Schroeder. He not only works for Bash Pepper, but he lives nearby. He came that same evening on his way home. He quickly identified the problem, caulked the area where flashing was missing, and walked the entire roof to see if anything else needed attention. He found one area where some shingles had slid, but it is not bad enough to be a problem right now. He offered to drive by periodically and keep an eye on it, which we are more than happy to take him up on. We had a previous experience with him when some shingles blew off the day we bought our house. The shingles were old enough that we couldn't match the color. He was able to take shingles from a less visible area to use for the patch, then put new shingles where they can't be as easily seen. We are very satisfied with Cord and will certainly keep calling him whenever we have an issue. read more

We had them put a new roof on about five years ago. They were great when we were buying a roof. We thought it was great and liked them but it started to leak during this last rainy season. We went into the attic and found that it had been leaking for a long time. The sub roof and insulation were moldy. We called and talked with office staff they said he would call back but he never did we tried to reach him for nearly a month. Calling multiple times with no return calls. They always said he would call us back but never did. Finally we talked to him and he said he said he would come out but he never came out. So we called a different company. They said that when the new roof was put on that they roofed over the old flashing around the chimney and that was causing the leak. I hate to leave negative feed back but we tried really really hard to give them a chance to at least talk to us about the problem. You can tell the integrity of a company by how they handle problems. I live in Chicago and needed someone to fix a small leak in the roof of my elderly mother's house in Champaign. I found Bash/Pepper on Angie's List and called them because of the consistently positive reviews there. The person from the company (Cord) showed up at the scheduled time, called me in Chicago from the roof, and quickly found the problem in the membrane roof, which he described to me and was able to solve with some caulking. He also walked me through his observations about the general state of the roof, and said he saw no reason for any major work in the immediate future. (He easily could have tried to push a bigger project, because the part of the roof that had leaked has been untouched for roughly 40 years.) I asked how to handle the mechanics of the bill, and he said not to bother, and that they wouldn't charge us because it had just taken a few minutes -- he just asked that we keep them in mind if we decided to do work on the roof, or that if we sell the house we let the buyer know that they had recently taken a look at the roof, both of which I'll happily do. read more
