A 6100-acre navy base (with a big golf course nextdoor). The base is a Spanish Navy base, however it is a main active duty destination for US Navy and US Air Force service members, and civilian employees.
Despite family military connections, it was not appropriate for us to visit the base on a leisure trip, so we got as close as we could. There is a lot of information on YouTube about service members' experiences at this base, and their time in Rota.
We saw Americans throughout Rota from time to time, presumably most of them were from the base, because it was off season when we were there, and they were often in groups of 3 to 6 people. My husband identified un-uniformed US Marines one time. Point is, there is a little American presence in Rota, and the US flag is flown at a number of hotels, beside the Spanish and Andalucian flags.
From their website: "NAVSTA Rota plays a crucial role in supporting our nation's objectives and defense, providing unmatched logistical support and strategic presence to all of our military services and allies. NAVSTA Rota supports Naval Forces Europe-Africa, 6th Fleet and COCOM strategic priorities by providing airfield and port facilities, security, force protection, logistical support, administrative support and emergency services to all U.S. and NATO forces."
"...NAVSTA Rota provides cargo, fuel and logistics support to units transiting the region, supporting U.S. and NATO ships with three active piers; U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force aircraft with a 670-acre airfield; and the largest weapons and fuels facilities in Europe, all located within a single, secure fence-line. Under the guidance of the Agreement on Defense Cooperation (ADC), the U.S. and Spanish navies work together and share many facilities." read more
