I am in my 50's and having been an avid listener of classical music, wanted to learn to play so I could appreciate it from another perspective. I started my lessons with Barry in January of 2019, and am very happy with the way I have come along. Here are some specifics: Studying an instrument as an adult has its challenges, balancing family and work. Barry has accommodated my needs perfectly, and I find it has worked better for me in practice time and improvement. Barry doesn't miss a thing: I don't know how he finds that one base note I missed among other mistakes that I know I am making! He is refreshingly old school, sticking to principles, while not being pedantic. I think that's a fine balance that is hard to find. Another: he knows exactly where we left off at the last lesson. That shows his engagement and care about where I am in my journey. Accessible: he always encourages to call him any time with any question during practice at home. I have done it a couple of time and he has always returned the call with an answer. I see some others have complained about playing with him. I actually think it's kind of a test to be able to play along, in rhythm, and satisfying when you can! I look forward to continue to learn with Barry in the coming years! read more

FANTASTIC!! It's difficult to put a review into words, as Mr. Lusted has turned my interest of playing (a hobby of sorts) into refined art with masterful skill. He is by far the most passionate and knowledgeable teachers with whom I've ever studied. He sequences all of the material very well and his pedagogy is very similar to other top-notch teachers I've taken lessons from for other instruments. I've taken with him for quite some time, and each lesson just gets better than the last. He sometimes plays along with you, which allows a more strict tempo as I'm learning a new piece. This also allows me to hear a superior interpretation of how the music should sound and some suggestions for artistic decisions. He also teaches how to READ MUSIC and learn all of the musical notes and symbols so that I learn my music faster and well-informed, allowing me to see the music for the first time with a critical ear and eye. I can, with no reservations, recommend Mr. Lusted. If you want to learn about the guitar, music, and beautiful art, he is hands down the best there is. The only negative I can say is that I wish I would have started taking lessons earlier with him. read more

Barry is an excellent guitar teacher! I took lessons with him quite a few years ago, and while I was not the most dedicated student, I still benefited greatly from his lessons. He focuses on teaching classical guitar and some music theory, which helps develop a strong foundation for all styles of guitar. I've recently taken up guitar again (more seriously this time), and my new teacher was quite impressed by the skills I already had thanks to Barry! Another reviewer mentioned that he was annoyed that Barry would play along with him during lessons, but I found this very helpful. Having to keep tempo with another person really forces you to know the piece well. If you haven't practiced well enough then you may be able to muddle through while playing solo, but you won't be able to keep a steady beat while playing with another person. This is a necessary skill if one ever wants to play professionally or in a band. Barry has a very unique personality but is extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and I certainly recommend taking lessons with him. read more

I have been studying with Mr. Lusted for about 7 years now. I began with classical music, which was always challenging, but the challenge made me a much better player. Each week I was able to play the songs I was practicing along with him. I got to see and hear some of his techniques, which I could then apply into my playing. I have moved on to even better songs now, and I am currently working on a song by the Beatles, along with the Old Piano Roll Blues. He has given me the chance to play many genres and develop a personal like for different music. I have truly loved my time learning with such an incredible guitarist. His passion for the guitar inspires me in my practice, and he genuinely wants you to learn the ins and outs of the guitar. I hope to study with him for as long as I can and would recommend him to anyone who really wants to learn the guitar. read more

Barry Lusted is the most experienced guitar instructor I have ever had! I have been learning classical guitar with him for the last seven and a half years. He had me reading guitar music in the first six weeks! He goes at the pace of each individual student's learning abilities and is very patient. He plays along with each student, in order to correct each student by showing them their mistake each time they make one, and how to correct it. It is by doing this, over time, one can develop the ability to hear their mistakes and correct them. He selects each song for a reason; each song provides a new, and fun challenge that gradually brings you to a higher level of playing over time. I now play advanced classical guitar! If you are looking for a excellent instructor of guitar, Mr. Barry Lusted is the one I hope you will choose! read more

For many yearsI had always heard about Barry Lusted being a superb classical guitar teacher. So I called him, set up a lesson, and have been amazed at his ability to teach me to play classical guitar. I must say I have gotten very good. Barry is always encouraging , positive , patient , and fun . My family has really been amazed at how far I have come in a short amount of time to be able to play songs I had only dreamed of playing. Barry truly truly loves teaching and playing guitar. The last couple minutes of my lesson I've been asking Barry to play me something on his guitar. Watching him play takes me to another place and inspires me so much. He truly is a gifted master at classical guitar. Kirk S. Prairieville La. read more
