Gizmo the Papillon. A few years younger and with a lot more teeth.
Christopher Michael M.

With any business, not everyone is going to have a great experience. Sadly, we had a terrible one with this veterinary clinic. People considering Barrett Station as a care place for their pets might want to know what we went through. If your pet is going into a procedure where the full extent of the work is going to be determined on the same day as the procedure, BEWARE. You are not going to be updated as to what the full extent of the work is going to be until you get the bill. My father-in-law took our oldest Papillon, Gizmo, in for a new patient consultation with veterinarian and owner of the clinic, John Pletz. Gizmo was checked out and it was recommended that he have a teeth cleaning and that he would have some teeth pulled. No price was quoted at the consult since the full extent of the work was going to be determined at the cleaning. The cleaning was scheduled. Gizmo was dropped off. When my father-in-law went to pick up Gizmo, he had a $1,000 bill waiting for him. After reviewing x-rays, Pletz determined he needed to pull 17 of Gizmo's teeth. He then proceeded to extract the teeth. At no point was my father-in-law contacted about the extensive procedure that was about to take place. No one called to give a breakdown of the price for the exact work being done. No one checked to see if a veteran on a fixed income could even afford to have it all done. There was no explanation about what was seen in the x-ray that would cause more teeth to be pulled than was in the consult. There was no chance to ask if the procedure could have been modified, or if some teeth could have been saved to help mitigate the cost. There wasn't even a chance to consider rescheduling the procedure. Instead he went to pick Gizmo up and was in for quite a shock. He thought Gizmo was simply going in for a teeth cleaning. Thankfully Barret Station had our card information, so they billed us instead of him. Regardless of how minor or major the vet determines the work is going to be, Barrett Station isn't going to contact the owner and inform them of the exact price or the exact extent of the procedure they are about to perform. They are not going to update you about the scope of the procedure. They are simply going to do the work, whether you would have wanted them to or not. Whether you could have afforded it or not. And that works with procedures where the full extent of the work is known at the time of the consult. But if your pet is going into a procedure where the full extent of the work is going to be determined on the same day as the procedure, BEWARE. You are NOT going to be updated as to what the full extent of the work is going to be until you get the bill. Subsequently, my wife and I both reached out to Barrett Station and talked to Pletz. He didn't want to acknowledge our concern. All he wanted to do was tell us he was in the right. I think the final straw for us was when he told my wife about all the big discounts he gave us. In other words, if he wanted to, he could have charged us a lot more. And that's exactly what we were complaining about. Shouldn't the owner get to know the final cost before the work is done? Where's the transparency? And if the full extent of the work can't be determined until x-rays are taken on the day of the procedure, shouldn't the owner get informed about the exact extent of the procedure once that determination is made by the vet? Not according to Pletz. All we can gather from our experience is that Pletz thinks he has sole authority over what work gets done. Pletz has sole authority over how much he bills you for it. And he isn't going to disclose any exact details about the scope of the work or the price in advance. He's going to do the work without giving the owner the chance to say 'yes' or 'no'. And if the owners have a problem with that then how dare they question his authority after all he did for them. After all, if he wanted to, he could have charged them a lot more! I can't describe how badly this sours my wife and I on veterinarians.

Excellent care, no nonsense, they tell it straight, and fast. I really appreciate this kind of medical care for my doggie.

The team at VSS carefully reviewed her imaging and records, and after a thorough assessment, recommended surgery right away. The doctor took the time to explain everything in detail -- what the procedure involved, what to expect, and the possible outcomes. We never felt rushed or pressured, only supported. Our cat was ultimately diagnosed with a rare form of throat cancer that typically occurs in dogs. Despite the seriousness of her condition, the staff gave us hope and confidence that she still had a full, happy life ahead of her. The surgeon personally called us after the procedure to update us and reassure us that she was doing well -- which meant so much, especially since it was her first night ever away from us. Thanks to the skill, compassion, and dedication of everyone at VSS, our girl made a full recovery and is now healthy, happy, and very much the Queen of the Castle. We are so grateful and would recommend Veterinary Specialty Services to anyone in need of expert, compassionate care for their pet.

The front end staff is fine but not as interested or enthusiastic as the majority of similar staff we have encountered in other vet clinics. Getting in on the assigned appointment time is no problem. Our last appointment was for both of our dogs and we saw Dr. Stuart who is lovely. She is the reason this is a three star review as opposed to two stars. The reason we are not enthusiastic about SSVC is the following: The time it took at our last appointment was excessive - two hours for relatively outine exams. After the vet was done I stood at the front desk for more than 25 minutes waiting for a few simple prescriptions. During this time nobody came to the front and apologized for the duration of the visit or the insane wait to get the prescritions and pay the bill - which was $351.00. The bill itself was breath-taking but did not factor in on this review. In the past 25 years we have had 4 miniture schnauzers and 1 yorkshire terrier. We have lived in STL for all but 2 of those years and used 3 vet clinics in STL and one when we lived out of state. The time issues at SSVC are extrodinary as are the front end issues compared to all our other experiences. Would we recommend SSVC? Given our experience as lifelong (more than 110 years between my wife and I) dog owners we would not recommend the clinic though we really liked Dr. Stuart. It is our belief you can find better service and qualified care elsewhere.

UNBELIEVEABLE!!! We…read morehave been loyal to this place for some time now and when we bring our elderly dog in for blood work we leave with a limp, lifeless dog. They decided to take blood through the carotid artery which put him into a major seizure. We heard wrestling and screaming from the back. They come out with no sympathy for the mistake they made and handed us an almost lifeless dog and then proceeded to guilt trip us by saying "I doubt he will make it but you will feel guilty if you don't at least try to take him to the hospital" We get to the hospital and the doctor there said that "THEY MADE A HUGE MISTAKE!! They should NEVER of taken blood through the carotid at this dogs age. I BLAME WESTGATE FOR THE EARLY EXPIRATION OF MY DOG! NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS LOCATION OR THEIR SISTER LOCATION BY 24 HOUR FITNESS ON CLAYTON AND BAXTER!!! After all of this happens we try to call and get some answers from the owner of the clinic to see why they decided to stick a large needle in my elderly dogs neck. We were not permitted to talk with the doctor, instead we were halted by the extremely rude receptionist who insisted on saying they have nothing more to say and when she could tell the sadness and anger in our voice she made it all about herself saying she felt threatened. I mean get some customer service. The owner of this place is a complete moron if he is allowing someone like that to run his place. I am speaking about the older, much less attractive receptionist at the Ballwin location (Not Jessie-she was always super nice) How unfortunate, but I guess its life.... Please take this into your decision on which vet to go to....DO NOT make the same mistake we did.

It's no frills, which makes it even better! I'd highly recommend Westgate for all of your pet's medical needs.
