Really great place for food. We went here for lunch and had a lovely burger. Service was excellent and we will definitely go back again.

Acanteen used to be my absolute favourite place to get brunch in the whole world. I always order…read morethe scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on bloomer toast with a side of hollandaise sauce. Their juices were amazing and the chai milkshake like a little cup of heaven. The interior decor was instantly recognisable - a massive wall of text telling a quirky story using local landmarks and food. Unfortunately Acanteen moved early this year to new, larger premises. Now it looks like an Ikea showroom. All the rustic charm of the old shop is lost, it's indescribably dark and the simplicity of shared benches with other strangers is ruined. The menu has been broadened to include a dinner menu and fairly bog-standard choices. The atmosphere is no longer laid back as you can feel the stress of the kitchen through the restaurant. I would always have given this establishment 5 stars. Now, I struggle to give it 1.

They do sandwiches, rolls, wraps, salads etc. They also have jacket potatoes with some very tasty fillings. I can highly recommend their soup also. You can also get the usual tea, coffee and juices as well as shakes and smoothies. They have a good tasty selection for vegetarians especially the wraps which are delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful and don't get annoyed when you spend ages deciding what to have! The prices may not be the cheapest but I think for the portions and the freshness and variety it is pretty good value. It's nice to treat yourself at lunchtime now and again.

Immediately, on arrival, we knew it would. Such a friendly welcome by the bar staff and front of house. Shown to our table, a nicely laid table, by a really charming young lady by the name of, we learned later, Eleanor. Drinks were ordered while we waited for the remainder of our party. Those drinks arrived promptly. When the entourage had arrived the food started to be served as our pre-requested, telephone, order. I would point out that Eleanor managed to serve the whole table and take drinks orders. A massive achievement. We had been to other establishments where two or three servers waited on us and still got things totally, disastrously, wrong. Not with this young lady, perfect. The food was fantastic, so compliments to the kitchen staff. Wonderful starters and as for the Christmas roast...delicious. Plenty of meat, stuffing etc etc and masses of veggies. Perfect. I missed out on a dessert as I was totally full but the remainder of the table tucked into plate loads of Christmas pudding and some had cheese. The whole evening went wonderfully well thanks to all the staff. People do forget those in the background that we never see. So thanks you to them. A massive thank you to Eleanor, the princess of The Castle.

They say that you should test a mattress as if you were going to sleep on it, and I always do that better on a full stomach. This place is just a quick walk from Warren Evens over a couple of 2 lane roads with cars lurching into and out of the roundabout. OR you could ignore Google maps, walk around the corner and cross as the pedestrian crossing and not take 10 years off your life. I really liked a lot about this place - the decor was something I'm more likely to find in the places I've visited in Dorset and Cornwall. Sadly, that's offset by the view out the front window being onto Argos shutters and it being located in a shopping center - still, at least it's self contained and you're not being gawked at by shoppers while you're eating. The staff were all friendly and no-one rushed us while we looked over the menu. Our orders were all correct (which I feel shouldn't be a value add, but increasingly is) It was the first decent breakfast I've had out in months - everything was hot and fresh, and cooked as expected. Drinks took a little longer to arrive than expected and only showed up half way through the meal, but they were tasty, hot and the perfect antidote to the rain outside. The do go a bit nuts with the toast, giving 2 large slices on a breakfast. But it was good bread and went perfectly with the eggs and beans. The sausage was quality - good flavour and properly cooked through without being burned. I definitely recommend this if you find yourself wanting a good cafe breakfast or afternoon tea and you're in the area!
