I happened upon this friendly shop a few years ago and on my first visit I mentioned to the lady…read morethat my dog was fussy with the food she would eat, so rather than advise me on which food to buy she gave me a load of samples and told me to see which one she liked and go from there. My dog took to one, which she still eats to this day. When returning to buy the food she also offered me to join the mailing list for the brand and said I would get offers through the post, which I did. I also tried to groomers recently and have now gone to them a few times. My dogs coat is extremely difficult to maintain and if I don't get to do it daily it gets matted very easily. The groomer there also said the dog has a very difficult coat so would be best to keep is as short as possible. I prefer her head a little longer and the groomer has always done her best to keep it longer than the body. A great personal service, they remember me when I go in store and are friendly and helpful.

A wonderful, friendly, approachable vet practice who will go out of their way to help. They are…read morevery gentle with the animals and the receptionists' telephone manner makes you feel really welcome. They make regular visitors feel so at home, as well as new visitors, welcome. Parking is easy, right next door in the pub car park, and the practice is opposite a pet shop, which makes visits far more convenient. They also provide many many leaflets and information on all sorts of animals. Visitors can also buy most of the vet recommended food products which can make the trip a very efficient one.

Hall 20 is quite a walk from Birmingham International railway station but I knew where I was going to it wasn't so bad. Lots of lovely animals to look at great for kids to see pets they might not have pestered their parents for previously. It looses a star for being far to warm in the hall but I presume the building doors can't be opened in the same way that they can for regular events. Was glad to see lots of water available for the animals to try and correct this. Well worth a visit for an afternoon!

I love animals, but living in a one bed flat (and being almost constantly out), my lifestyle doesn't lend itself to keeping a pet at home. The National Pet Show was being held at the NEC in hall 20. If you've been to the National Exhibition Centre before you'll know it's a bit of a labyrinth. Hall 20 is right down the other end of the centre from the train station, so it's about a 10 - 15 minute walk from Birmingham International. Outside the show was a small desk where you could enter a competition to win lots of different prizes, however these were all orientated towards pet owners (free food, bed etc), so we gave this a miss. Once in, there was animals everywhere! Lots of cats, dogs, rabbits to the more unusual lizards, Degu's and chickens! We did a bit of a circle around the hall and checked out the ferret rescue, before making our way around lots of different pet related merchandise. We ended up seeing donkeys, ponies and alpacas before and getting to the dog shows. There must have been around 30+ different breeds of dog to stroke and admire. After this section was the cats! There wasn't as many different types of feline, but they were all totally gorgeous and very friendly. The owners of all of the animals were brilliant; answering questions and giving insights into the quirks of each breed. After the bigger pets came the "small furries". As a huge rat fan, I was pleased to see the "National Association Of Fancy Rat Owners" were in attendance, as well as a showing from guinea pigs, rabbits and degu's. As well as the furry side of pets, there was a lovely stand from the "National Chicken Rescue" where little chicks were happily chirping away and "Wierd'N'Wonderful" who had bought along a brilliant selection of lizards, scorpions and spiders to look at. I have to admit, it seems as though we missed the cheese, wine and other bits and pieces that have been mentioned in the reviews! We did catch some of the "rabbit show jumping" (Which was quite a sight) before calling it a day. I had a lovely hour and a half petting the animals and chatting to the owners, but this is definitely a show geared up towards small children and pet owners. Don't get me wrong, I would revisit; but if you're a pet person or have small kids - this is a must go!

Was obviously dubious about handing our housekeys to complete strangers but were happy and comfortable from the start. Our cat was happy sat between them on the settee and showed no signs of hiding away. All the details were meticulously written down and Tigers medication details. We received a couple of texts whilst away which put our minds at rest and on getting home read the 'cat diary'. We were surprised to discover that our cat was more capable of things than we thought! Being here all the time we are constantly up and down letting him in and out! We have discovered that he is quite capable of jumping through an open window if the need arises! We also expected him to have lost some weight but this clearly has not been the case and I think he has had a week of total pampering!! I would definitely recommend and use again when the need arises. Thank you very much.

I am a proud owner of one very sweet, very pampered greyhound - he's currently called Dave but…read moreprior to that he used to race at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium, under the moniker 'Magical Climate'. He was actually quite good - although this is a bit of a surprise to me and my Mom, as he now spends his retirement loafing about on the sofa, begging for tripe sticks and being tickled under the chin. We got Dave from Daybreaks Kennels which is home to the Perry Barr Retired Greyhound Trust and which is run by an amazing woman called Ruth Boswell. Dave was a bit of a state when we first laid eyes on him - without wanting to lay on the schmaltz too much years of racing had rendered him threadbare of tail, gammy of tooth and with what one could only describe as a 'lean and hungry look'. However, with Ruth's care - and lashings of tripe sticks, Dave made really good progress and although I'm obviously biased I think its fair to say he is a really handsome, jolly dog now. As for Daybreaks itself - the kennels are open daily and you can arrange a viewing by phoning ahead. If you're feeling particularly soppy you can also check out their website where you will be greeted by photos of dogs who need a home. This is a brilliant place run by a dedicated, extremely lovely team - they are always happy to offer advice on homing procedure, guidance on the right sort of dog for you and will happily talk to you after you've taken your dog home. As well as the kennels there's a shop that sells collars, leads, beds, food, toys and well...all sorts really.
