Let me tell you in the past several years (even before COVID) I'd go to a barber...explain my hair cut...get a hair cut...get home and then have to trim or fix something. Seriously! Today was the first day that I've been to have my haircut professionally since before the pandemic. I was going to go to another barbershop in the neighborhood but they were closed. I made a Sunday appointment at Barberology as my usual snipping haunt was booked full and the barbershop was close-by (adjacent to the neighborhood dry cleaner.) I showed up for my session a few minutes prior to my appointment time and was greeted first by the shop pupper, Maisie(sp?), an adorable white french bulldog and Michael McGinty, the barber and proprietor. He warmly welcomed me and then seated me in the barber chair. Before we got into the specifics on my cut, I hijacked the conversation to compliment him on the shop decor and ambiance. I had seen the space under construction from time to time when dropping off my clothes next door and was ecstatic to have crossed the threshold into the finished setting. It was like a rugged lodge crossed with a modernist sensibility; lots of salvaged wood with sassy fixtures. The space is bright but not hard on the eyes as the dark wood tones complementing reigned it in enough to not be distracting. Michael was pleased with my appreciation of his efforts to transform the space into one aligned with his vision. After our chat, Michael and I consulted on the specifics of the cut I was looking for and my expectations thereof. I told him I wanted to clean my mop up a bit and asked him for his professional opinion as to what avenue he would suggest.He made a few spot on observations I hadn't considered...you know how it is when you stare at your own mug for too long, it's a challenge to be objective! Then we got down to business. Top observation during the cut; Michael is focused and incredibly precise. For the clipper cut I was getting he carefully considered each application of the device, standing back periodically to assess and evaluate the next move. It was pretty awesome and I was confident I was in more than capable hands. At the end of the cut we headed over to the sink for a shampoo and remove any stray thatch that remained on my head. The mini head massage was really added the spice to the cake! We then went back the chair and we discussed my styling preferences to which he asked which direction I normally part my hair. After telling him, he suggested to reorient the part in the other direction as my the whorl of my hair (the spiral with which hair grows out of the scalp) would be better suited for that. No more top of the scalp cowlick for me! He made some product suggestions and then instructed me the best way to apply it for my hair very fine hair type. After he did a bang up job getting my new coif settled and asserting that I was happy with the outcome, he produced the card swiper and we got all the remuneration settled up. The prices was super reasonable ($40 or $45, if I recall correctly) for the services rendered I was very pleased with the results... which I hope the tip I left expressed! I will definitely make a return visit to Barberology; As a matter of fact, it will be my new go-to. 5 stars. read more
