I experienced what I can only describe as negligence and incompetence at best, and cruelty and callousness at worst. After months of building trust, she informed me that I would need to return to a residence where abuse occurred as a child in my adult life or "end up on the streets." She made this statement to an employed adult, earning a six-figure salary in corporate America, seeking therapy to address these painful issues privately. When I respectfully confronted her about her odd statement in session, she dismissed my concerns, accusing me of being "triggered" by her comment about living on the streets. I pointed out that I had never seen any research suggesting that therapeutic progress improves by returning to environments where abuse occurred. I also explained that if she didn't believe in me as a person, there was no reason for me to continue paying hundreds of dollars a month for therapy. I could easily find someone who believed in me--and wouldn't charge me for it. I'm sure I could also find people who didn't believe in me, for free. Her response was to scream at me saying "I made a mistake," and, only after the fact, admit that it was a mistake. I ended the relationship, but after much thought, I feel it's important to speak out. My hope is that others can avoid the anxiety, betrayal, and wasted time I experienced.

By the time I found Gateway on Montana, I had already had 10 treatments, so I was extensively familiar with the myriad benefits. After a series of situations requiring a temporary relocation to Santa Monica recently brought me to the neighborhood, I happened to stumble upon this beautiful facility one sunny day in July, and was warmly greeted by Zohreh. After a lovely chat, I immediately scheduled their next available appointment, and was able to get an infusion within two days (on a Saturday), at about half the price I was paying in the Bay Area, which was such a relief to discover. I am so grateful to have found this place, and have now had five sessions at Gateway Clinics. As someone who is very sensitive to all pharmaceuticals, and neither tolerates nor desires any traditional medications, I am thankful to have discovered ketamine on the advice of a functional (aka holistic) psychiatrist a few years back. I have since learned that Ketamine is a tremendously safe, versatile, and wonderful drug that has been used since the early 1960s, and may be administered at different dosages, in any one of three ways: as an anesthetic (for sedation, like during surgery), as an analgesic (to achieve relief of chronic pain), and as a psychedelic (requiring much lower doses, for mental health support). In my case, ketamine has been instrumental in helping me with all of the following areas of concern: depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, trauma, addiction, suicidal ideation, fatigue, sleep, cognitive performance, mental clarity, and even everyday functionality on a seemingly ordinary human level that so many of us take for granted (until compromise thereof occurs). Within one treatment, ketamine also gently washed away a lifelong fear of needles and IVs, and this annoying obstacle has never returned. I like to say that ketamine (as with most psychedelics) often quite dramatically improves one's capacities: to care for self and others; to move through the world of experience with greater ease, mindfulness, and attention to the present moment; to love more of what is; to gravitate away from the tendency to overcomplicate things, and rather toward a preference for simplicity; and in general to suffer less. It was by way of studying philosophy for 10 years that I discovered meditation and psychedelics. I would never have imagined that a deep immersion in academia would lead me here. Absolutely everyone on the Gateway Clinics team is of the highest caliber. Locally, Zohreh is phenomenal, and creates an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to come in and stay awhile. All of the Nurse Practitioners are phenomenal, and treat their patients with the utmost care, kindness, compassion, respect, and even joy. The founder, Clay, and his wife, Ariane, are both spectacular human beings. I am genuinely impressed with every detail of this practice. The entire organization feels very much like a family, and without doubt they are mission-driven to heal the world, one bodymind at a time. In addition to safe, convenient, and legal psychedelic therapy, Gateway also offers several vitamin infusions, B-12 shots, and a perfect array of products to go, such as: targeted wellness and supplement sprays; high potency medicinal mushroom tinctures (e.g. Lion's Mane and Shitake); raw superfood chocolates featuring adaptogenic mushrooms and herbs; and a nice selection of quality CBD products, including tinctures, gummies, and flower. Life is already struggle enough in so many ways. On my view, every being alive deserves the chance at a happier, healthier, more peaceful experience of existence if at all possible. Wholeness is a birthright; and psychedelic therapies are unquantifiably vital to the end of helping to facilitate precisely that. I highly recommend this "Gateway" to infinite possibility. We are so fortunate to have it here.

I consider myself fairly particular about whom I work with in any setting, but especially so in therapy, and I have no reservations about recommending Dr. Dicken wholeheartedly to anyone in search of counseling on the Westside, or even remotely. In addition to her strong fundamentals - pattern recognition, ability to link the past to the present, clear memory for people and events - Dr. Dicken brings both a calming warmth and a wry sense of humor to her work. She also possesses a broad range of intellectual reference points, which makes her a more universally accessible therapist. I appreciated how we were able to build a strong relationship - complete with conversational shorthand, vulnerable and honest communication in both directions, and the occasional (or even frequent) jokes. While working with Dr. Dicken, I made significant strides in several key relationships with both friends and family, as well as in my professional life. Obviously these changes were not her doing, but having her there to work through obstacles and concretize action plans was a significant help. I ended my engagement with her in December of 2019 because I felt confident that I could succeed in my short- and medium-term goals without additional therapy, thanks in large part to the work we did together and the tools I developed in those sessions. Finding a therapist is a very personal process, but I believe Dr. Dicken has a broad appeal and is well worth consideration for anyone in search of a down-to-earth and thoughtful counselor.

The first time I went as a walk in because I'd read somewhere that they accept walk-ins. That's ONLY if you're already a patient of theirs. Soooo, I spent an hour in traffic from Los Feliz and God knows how much gas driving to this place to be told they don't take walk-ins for new patients. The waiting room was empty. Thankfully, I read here on Yelp that they have parking validation because no one mentioned it and I would have been stuck with a $21 parking free. I asked for the validation, paid the $4.00 (not $2 as it says on their site) and wasted gas driving back home. But I was impressed with the neighborhood and how friendly the staff was (especially the receptionists), even as they turned me away. Second try: I made an appointment and went in. I only waited about 20 minutes, which was great. I encountered really nice employees leading up to my exam. I'd expected a bad experience as I've always had a private doctor and insurance until recently. I'd heard horror stories about clinics treating women like crap and being located in really scary neighborhoods. The physician's assistant who saw me was a bit gruff in her bedside manner and I've never had a GYN be so rough during an exam. She then told me I needed to stop squirming and pulling up on the seat. And she seemed annoyed when I didn't understand her blunt question, "Are you bleeding?" to mean am I having normal menstrual cycles. We'd been talking about fibroids, so I thought the question was in relation to fibroids, not menstrual cycle. Overall, she was the person there that I really would like to have exchanged for someone else. But I wasn't harmed in any way, so I just chalked it up to a clinic experience versus a private doctor. I was asked for a donation and I gave $20. The third time I went (today) was for a well woman's exam. I made an appointment for 9 AM and I had a work related event at 11:00. I fought the hounds of hell to get there in the AWFUL traffic along Santa Monica Blvd only to sit in the waiting room nearly TWO HOURS. What was the point of an appointment? I changed the work appointment I had to 12 noon. I went to the window three times to ask what was going on. A very friendly nurse came out and got me for my vitals, asked me for a donation, then sat me back down in the waiting room where I watched several women who came in after me go into the back to see doctors. I was baffled. But each time I asked how much longer, I was told politely I'd be seen soon and was given an apology. Finally, after two hours, I told them I could not wait any longer. I was so stressed and upset that I nearly burst into tears in the parking lot. Another woman in the parking lot asked me which doctor I'd seen and how did I like the experience. I told her I'd not seen a doctor and she was confused. "You were never seen??? You were there when I got there ." Exactly. I paid my $4.00 AGAIN for parking without being seen. They have a 15 minute grace period for patient arrival but I can sit in the waiting area for two hours past my appointment time??? Although I believe they mean well and they are very kind, I don't know if I'll go back. I don't understand why they'd double and triple book. Because it's low cost doesn't mean it's right to waste people's time. I'm so disappointed because I was very happy about this clinic and told a couple of friends how wonderful it was.
