Booked a viewing that we attended, the letting agent then asked for a ridiculous amount of information to the tune of 2 character references, 2 landlord references, 2 employer references and everything else. We were then left with almost no contact for 2 and a half weeks and we could not contact them (kept going to voicemail or they would answer and say they were still processing the information- the property was for 3 people). Only to be emailed out of hours to inform us they had let the property to another set of tenants, after I had cancelled viewings with other houses. There are very few estate agents that I recommend or would say yes they are professional and won't try and rip you off. Barbara Rees has a small team of people who are friendly and follow up with great service. The only problem is they are in the wrong location to capitalise on the student market. Most students will walk into the first place they come past and gladly give up the fees without even confirming a house. It's a shame that Keylet, Pinnacle, Taylorsimpson and others have failed to have high ethical standards, from withholding bonds and failing to repair houses. A reputable business should expand to fill the dubious business practises of these other companies and keep high standards to be a trendsetter and benchmark, Barbara Rees and Co. may be just that. read more

As far as letting agents go, Barbara Rees are like the anti-thesis of CPS, Pinnacle and Keylet. The shining knight taking on those three vicious, thieving dragons. They are the contrast proving that letting agents don't have to be inconsiderate, conniving liars in order to provide their service. A year after leaving the Keylet incident behind, and fresh off the Pinnacle debacle, my housemates and I managed to find a wonderful place that was absolutely perfect for us. Barbara Rees took us through it, let us talk about everything, answered our questions frankly and honestly and told us repairs were scheduled for a short period into our proposed tenancy but we'd be paying reduced rent for that time if we were happy with it. We were. Upon getting to the office, Barbara Rees contacted the landlord who told him CPS were handling that property for him now. Alright, this was fine; apparently it's not uncommon for two companies to handle one property. We went down to CPS, paid the agency fee of £260 and waited. The agent then informed us that the landlord was mistaken and Barbara Rees was handling the property. Annoying, yes. But manageable. Can we have our money back to go pay Barbara Rees? "No." Grumblegrumblegrumble. Went back to Barbara Rees, explained the situation and was told they'd handle it. To cut it all short, Barbara Rees did everything they could to help us and went way beyond what we'd come to expect from letting agents, even negotiating a lowered price when one housemate had to drop out of the tenancy. I highly, HIGHLY recommend Barbara Rees to any students looking for a house in Cardiff. They realise that tenants are actually people, rather than giant bags of money with a list of easily ignored complaints stapled to them. read more

Barbara Rees was yet another letting agent that we used to try and find our house for next year (I did warn you right at the very beginning that there were A LOT of agencies! We wanted to make sure we got the right one!). We were impressed by every aspect of our experience with the Barbara Rees team. They were friendly yet professional. They had a really good range of houses available, in a wide range of areas and under a number of different budgets. Going to view houses with them made us feel comfortable and appreciated as customers due to their excellent service. It also made us feel safe, in that they seemed to know all the individuals in every house. That made us feel like they were involved. Would not recommend Barbara Rees to my worst enemy. Absolutely awful service. Staff are downright rude and condescending - often showing up to the house unannounced or with about 20 minutes notice and not bothering to make conversation/be polite. Before moving in there was bad damp throughout the house that we were told would be removed prior to us moving in. This was not followed up whatsoever even 8 MONTHS after living in the property and having to buy our own expensive dehumidifiers. After the microwave that was in the property when we moved in had broken they stated they would not replace it as it "wasn't part of the property beforehand". The property has had multiple problems with mice, leaks, an out of date fire alarm, lack of fire blanket and power cuts all of which have barely been sorted out and when they have it is a task to get in contact with the agents as they regularly ignore emails. They make you feel like you've made them go out of their way to provide services which should be a given. Shame on you Barbara Rees. read more

Barbara Rees are one the worst estate agents I have encountered whilst living here in Cardiff; the staff are horrible and take every advantage of tenants. For example, they will rip you off by charging you ridiculous fees from the start to the end of the tenancy. I would recommend that you avoid letting with B rees. I'm not a big fan at all to be honest. I find their methods old fashioned and not very accommodating. In order to sign the contract we needed a lot of information and it snowed around the time we needed it, affecting the postal service. Apparently email in the eyes of Barbara Rees lettings isn't good enough to send documents to the appropriate parties to expedite matters. And when certain bits of information were delayed they went against their own processes anyway. As a modern house share in Cardiff, I expected to pay my bit of the rent, but again, they insist on one lot of money from one source. Now I understand the reasoning behind this, I am not unreasonable, but it just highlights how out of touch these Valleys troglodytes are when it comes to most modern house shares in Cardiff. So, with all the money coming from my account, I thought once we'd set everything up things would be great. But some odd things were happening to my the amount taken from my bank account - some times the amount would vary, then no rent would be taken. This indicates the DD set up (not a SO) like most places was being manually processed each month! When I sent them a letter to highlight the fact no rent had been taken, they wanted me to march into the bank to set up a new one! Excuse me? Sort your office out. Does not appear to run a Tenant Deposit Scheme, something I think is illegal now? Which brings me to my next massive down side. I am still waiting for my bond to be returned having left the property two months on and confirmed everything in good order. The reason, the new person taking over my bit of my COMPLETED contract has not paid his bond! Disgusting is a word I like to use in this instance, I'm fairly sure I can take action on this. One good point, they did sort maintenance work out when needed. In summary: Difficult, unreliable, old fashioned and probably slightly illegal.I wouldn't recommend if you like clear contracts, flexibility and intelligent staff. Great for a family though, the situation would be better in that instance. read more

Our experience with Barbara Rees Estate Agents has been the worse we have ever had with an agent. From the start they have been money grabbing, even creating charges in ever inventive manners. They do not answer any question as soon as they get your money they do not care at all. There business practices sseem unethical, they seem to feed all money to Mar-Ray Estates and run the LTD company at a loss. We paid our rent on time but were treated appallingly. I had a torrid time when it came to that age old problem with unscrupulous letting agents - getting your deposit back. To cut a long story short, Barbara Rees took £110 of our deposit, with a list of 5 spurious reasons for this daylight theft. The house was IMMACULATE when we left it, but Barbara and her cronies supposedly had to bring in a vastly overpriced cleaner. And although the garden was not mentioned in the initial contract, and despite the fact I cut the whole bleeding lawn with a pair of shears (there wasn't a lawnmower provided!), Barbara deemed that a gardener was supposedly required (and judging by the price that she quoted on our bill, it must have been a landscape gardener!). This was nearly 2 years ago now, but I still feel queasy at the injustice of it all. read more
