Oh--and they were known for their house Vermut which we wanted to experience. Great historical building with a nice, local neighborhood bar vibe. Very friendly staff seated us quickly and helped us with an English menu. We mostly wanted snacks before dinner so we went with chips, olives and cheese (which included tomato bread.) And vermut. In this place, the fact that they set down a plate with a bag of chips was fun and part of the experience. Love that signal that hey, we're a local bar--not a Michelin star snobbery. Cheese and bread were tasty, as were the olives. The vermut was enjoyable too. All in all, great place to stop and experience. No wonder it's been around for well over 100 years.

When I saw the calçots sauce on the menu of La Cerveseria Clandestina I assumed they preserved the special green onions from spring and made them into the sauce that would give me an idea of what they are like. However, after talking to the waitress I realized that it was just a typical sauce that came WITH grilled calçots and it doesn't actually contain calçots. Similarly to duck sauce in Chinese- American cuisine and eel sauce in Japanese cuisine it didn't actually have calçots outside of its name. They were out of a couple things I wanted to try and I ended up going with the croquettes sampler. There were 4 different ones: vegetable, mushroom, spinach-hummus, and mushroom-sweet potato. They were all delicious.
