No one came back by to check on us so I walked inside and the guy bar tender looked at me, turned away and made a joke with another guy at the bar. These guys are jerks. Don't go here.

They're cheap and usually really good. Got to chatting with a French couple with two kids. They had lived in the US for a few years and were shocked that we both spoke French. We needed to be practicing our French, they wanted to practice their English so we mixed it up during the meal while their kids ran around. Cafe culture ... Good spot.

They seated us and menus did have some English which we appreciated ( although we also have translator programs). After a 10 min wait a server came by and frantically told us the kitchen is closed and would not open until 6:30 PM. Not sure then why we got menus but maybe for drink list. We politely said we were going to leave. An employee ( manager?) asked if we'd like to order drinks and told us no other places serve food between 6:30 or 7PM). We thought this sounded fair and returned to our table. No one ever returned to take our order so we left quietly for a second time. Never to return. Was this a language barrier issue ? We're a quiet , polite group of professionals who travel frequently. Hope it wasn't something dumb based on misconceptions of our nationality. Plenty of places to eat and drink in Arles. An unfortunate mistake wasting time at this one.

We shared a dark tapenade (olive-y and fishy) and a mixed cheese/charcuterie plate with the requisite cornichons and pickled olives. They had two nice reds by the bottle, personal faves of mine - Vieux Télégraphe and Trevallon, at around €90, which is what they cost in a wine shop in New York anyway. Would happily come back.

Although the menu was limited at this hour ("You like boeuf, no?"), the execution was superb. Much to our delight, we were presented with two exquisitely prepared filets of beef, cooked rare with a red wine sauce. Trés bon! After desert, the server delivered to our table two glasses and a bottle of liquor filled with some kind of clear spirit and various fruits (it reminded me of moonshine). The server just left the bottle and beckoned us to help ourselves--and there was no charge for it on our bill at the end of the meal either. Throughout the evening, we felt 100% at home and at ease, as if the entire restaurant existed just to serve us. The restaurant was filled entirely with what looked like locals, without a word of English spoken (except by us of course). It was a magical night, and we highly recommend it!
