Elevated tee box on hole 15. When we got to the fairway, there were 2 large elk just chilling at the 150 yard marker

This is quite a golf course. I have had the opportunity to play some some of the top 100 courses across the United States and the Banff Springs course ranks right up there. From the first tee until the 18th hole, just about every tee shot is framed by the Canadian Rockies. While Hole #4 is deemed the "signature" hole, you could say that 10 or 12 other holes would qualify just the same. In fact, I found myself bringing my cell phone camera to the tee box on just about every hole -- it was that beautiful. The golf conditions were great. The fairways were in great shape and the greens were nice as well. We saw the cart girl a few times and they had a good selection of snacks, beers, and hard liquor too. As a bonus, when we were on the 15th hole, we saw two large elk in the fairway. The elk eventually made their way onto the green and tried to eat the flag on top of the pin. It was crazy. The first review on this course (from Mr. B in 2013) is absolutely correct -- this course is probably one of the best in the world. If you make it to Banff, you should make every effort to play 18 holes here.

They were gas powered and one was even slower than the other. They had NO ice chests or golf ball washers. When we finished and returned the carts, we noticed that many of the carts were much better. We complained to the staff in the pro shop who offered us a raincheck, but we flew to be there and won't come back. They offered to have their pro Chris Cooke call or email us and he never did, no surprise. Great views, but I wouldn't go there again. Kananaskis, about 35 minutes away was a far superior experience.

The clubhouse is a nice setting, the washrooms were upscale and clean. Heading out on the course the signage was relatively clear even for first time players of the course. There is a canteen and starter hut at the clubhouse as well as a canteen midway through the front and back 9. The staff were all friendly, and we didn't find them the least bit pretentious. (There are also many weddings and receptions held here) Bring your camera to this course and play when they are less busy, as once you make your way up the mountain side, the views are spectacular. Playing twilight with the sun setting behind the mountains made the scene even more incredible. There are sme nice designed features that make the course more beautiful again. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in rather good shape for the time of year. The cart paths are crazy winding and often steep. The electric carts have no trouble making the round, but you need to drive cautiously. There were plenty of animals along the course that added to the setting, For a not very skilled female golfer, I enjoyed how forgiving the fairways are. The hills funnel my bad shots back into the fairway. The fairways were wide enough and the tree lines cleared well enough, that I only recall losing one ball all round. This may not be a great course for a highly skilled strategic golfer do to the hills and funnel effect, but it was a fun course and I would love to go back again!

There are two downhill par three holes with dramatic elevation changes overlooking a gorgeous river with the Rockies in the distance. Since the sand oil business seems to be set up at the base of this course it has marred the view but this is easily overlooked and ignored. 0.5 deduction. Routing and shot values 4.5: I walked the front nine. This is very doable. The shot values and aim lines are very good to generous fairways on the front nine. This is where you want to score. The par 5 2nd is reachable and the elevation changes aren't overly taxing for walkers. The back nine is NOT walkable. The pro-staff was helpful and made sure we took a cart for the back nine. Long walks between holes and Steep terrain make the back nine cart necessary. Golf carts are gas powered as necessary on hilly courses. The back nine plays down into a valley for several holes and you lose the majesty of the Rockies during that time. The houses that border the course come into play more than I like. The back is much more demanding and narrow so be prepared and avoid the big number. 0.5 deduction for the houses. Staff 4.5: friendly in the pro shop and cafe. Cart guys look exhausted and were just helpful enough; Very perfunctory. 0.5 deduction. Also the pull carts they have are the giant wheel type that too over with regularity on hilly terrain. They would be best served by having 4 wheeled push carts by Clicgear of Sun Mountain. Greens 4.0: they were in good shape but starting to get overrun by poana grass. Hence several putts were knocked offline by flowering poana; a weed that is a curse to all golf courses. I'm a 6 handicap and had played banff springs and heritage pointe on this trip. Perfect greens in both instances with heritage taking the prize. Pace of play 5: played in 4:25. No rangers on this go around but no issues either. The foursomes in front of us kept pulling away, playing fast. Much appreciated!! Overall, this course deserves 5 stars because it was a joy to play. My advice is to walk the front and ride the back nine. Enjoy the scenery and play for the spectacular shot!
