I went down to see my uncle who was not doing well on a Sunday. I must say I had a hard time finding a parking space but most importantly, I did not know how to get inside of the building when I got there. I asked several people and no one could tell me that I was standing right in front of all the construction, but there was a walkway. Finally, I got inside went to the security desk and they gave me my uncles room number, and one of the other security guards escorted me up to the room and even offered me a chair inside the room . Horrible experience from a-z. Today I decided enough is enough and have written the following letter to "whom it may concern" because this VA can't even list who the actual Director of this hospital maybe. It is time for all Veterans to stand up and raise our pens and write about the lack that exists in a system that exists because WE raised our hands to defend this country. Stand up Veterans, call to attention this travesty that exists and it's not due to money , no this about hiring administrative workers who expect to keep their jobs for life without working. The letter is as follows: I'm writing with a two-fold complaint regarding the Baltimore VA Medical Center. While I had hoped for a smoother introduction to the system, my experience so far has been more bureaucratic maze than medical care -- and that's putting it gently. First, on May 11, 2025, I called the hospital to request the names of the patient advocates. I was given two names: Curtis Berry and Nikita Berryman, along with two extensions. Unfortunately, neither extension was actually associated with the advocates -- a frustrating twist, especially when the main VA website lists extension 57099, which doesn't even allow you to leave a message. With all the talk about improving service and budget concerns, one might expect that knowing how to reach a patient advocate would be basic information. Apparently not. And in another surprising twist, the website lists Jonathan R Eckman, 410-605-7016 and the voice is clearly not a mans voice, It also lists Diane Choi, as the Associate Director for Patient Care, 410-605-7041 and the voice box hasn't been set up. Secondly, I enrolled in the Baltimore VA earlier this year and met with a nurse on April 21, 2025. During that visit, I was given referrals to the Dermatology, Eye, and Dental Clinics. I called and left messages on April 30 for all three, and again a few days later on May 5th when I received no response. Sadly -- and I say this without exaggeration -- I wasn't even surprised when no one called me back. It's disheartening when disappointment becomes the norm. Now, I'm not calling any more clinics. I've left my number (xxx-xxx-xxxx). If someone feels inclined to do the job they're paid to do, I'll be available. As a veteran, I understand staffing issues and cutbacks -- truly, I do. But I also understand the power of a well-placed letter. If I haven't heard back by Friday, May 23, 2025, I'll be forwarding my concerns to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C., as well as to my congressional representatives, along with D O G E to help this hospital become what we as Veterans and taxpayers should expect with a hospital that serves VETERANS. Maybe they can help remind some folks in Baltimore what their job titles actually mean. And just to top it off: the day I enrolled at the Baltimore VA, two women were sitting at the enrollment desks. Both were on their personal phones. Despite seeing two veterans standing there filling out intake forms, neither paused their conversations to acknowledge us. Eventually, one of them ended her call and called me over -- but not before I had a sinking feeling I should've taken names then and there. Appointment was at 1:30, checked in at 1:25, went back on time. Waiting room is tidy and clean. Not sure why the escalator is not operable. Women's clinic was very nice and I was seen promptly. Provider was very thorough and made sure I had resources to contact other departments as needed. Nearly no line at the pharmacy. 5 min wait for labs which was more than reasonable for 2 phlebotomists only. They were also as helpful to guide me to another location I needed. Out front the Security dude smoking *RIGHT* in front of the no smoking sign under a camera is crazy though. Should probably address that- especially if he's the same one who scolded me for being a civilian trying to park. (Crazy thought that people can be pregnant after their military service- I know.) That's where the two stars go. Especially since I've seen another reviewer stating the exact same thing. Another issue is how no one from the county services will take you to the VA? (Cops, emts, ERT) Why is that not even a thing? They will take you to the opposite side of the county but not the VA that's in the center. Should probably review that contract... read more

Dirty, dark building and the cafeteria and dining areas stink of grease. The staff seem half asleep, eating breakfast at their desks when I arrived for my sked appt. They acted as if I was interrupting them. This is not the first time this has happened. VA is supposed to be about service. Scheduling an appt is a real chore; was passed around to six different individuals and no luck. read more

I'm a veteran. Almost Every experience/ I've had with this hospital has been subpar. I went to this facility due to having difficulty breathing due to a faulty gas pump. I had breathed in gasoline fumes. I have a portable nebulizer, however my breathing issues got worse. I called a Nurse named Jo at the VA, who stated I needed to go to the hospital for relief and since I now had excess phlegm..she noted that I was asthmatic and with the phlegm and wheezing, I needed to be concerned about pneumonia or other respiratory issues. No one was available at that time to take me so I drove myself with all the windows down and tried not to stress. By the time I got there, my breathing was shallow and I was approached by a concerned security guard who offered a wheelchair since I was not steady on my feet. I gaspingly told him of my distress and was directed to ER. On the way I was asked to use a mask they gave me as opposed to the one I came in with. I complied. I told the receptionist I was having breathing difficulties. She stated I didn't know what was going on unless I was triaged and to have a seat I would be seen after registration. When I again stated I was having breathing difficulties she stated she was a nurse and for me to have a seat. WTH! I've been in the system since 1994. I asked that they check for a note in my file from Nurse Jo who had advised me to go. She said again I had to be triaged first. I have had to go to several VA Hospitals for breathing difficulties over the past 30 years. Everywhere else I was immediately taken back to get assistance. Not Here. After 20+ minutes sitting shallowly breathing..I needed to get some air. As soon as I informed them that I was leaving they stated that they were just about to triage me...and that if I was truly having difficulty I should wait. I was in disbelief, struggling to breathe and didn't have the words. They trivialized my symptoms, did not check my notes that Nurse Jo put in and basically discounted me. I said as soon as I was able to talk I was complaining. I called the patient advocate office and left a message. No response after 24 hrs. My advice to any other veteran, go to DC, Walter Reed, or anywhere else but here. They did not seem to prioritize or care. It's just a job. The phone operator stated..I should have called an ambulance if it was a Real emergency. besides..he said he could barely understand me. read more

Came to the VA Clinic today for the COVID vaccine clinic and it was amazing. From the parking to the check in, to getting the vaccine, all of the staff and military working did an amazing job. The staff were positive and even with the high volume, we were in and out in an hour. Definitely a five star visit. read more

This facility is huge and secured with punctual security which is necessary for a VA facility. If it's your first time there, the security will sure know and will help you find where you need to be in the building. Its clean and majority of the people I have encountered are respectful. read more

So there I was, back in December I found I had a rash. The kind of rash that would really restrict your social calendar. The kind that's going to make beach season awkward. Well, fortunately for me December was months and months away from beach season. Unfortunately I needed to depend on the VA for care. I needed an initial appointment to get a primary care provider. 4 months to wait for that and even then she didn't want to look at my rash, I would need a separate appointment. Fine, I make one. 6 weeks later I'm getting pictures taken to send to a dermatologist and 8 weeks later here I am, finally getting treatment from a dermatologist on July 30. I have to say that my expectations weee pretty low for this place, based on reviews, etc., but I will say that almost all of the staff my veteran dad and I encountered when I took him there were very friendly and helpful. It would have been nice to get a referral to the cotrect person when I was told I had to speak to a social worker about getting assistance with caregiver suppott, buit other than that, I was pleasantly surprised with the parking and navigating this big building that seems like a maze. The lobby bathrooms had clearly been redone, so that was nice, bec. this is bldg. is architecturally a monstrosity. Lol The caferteria was dismal, but at least it was an option for us, and the Asian food was welcone as a healthy alternative. The vet staff member who shared a table with us was very pleasant. I do want to say thar the woman who was servicing the drink ciounter was pretty rude to me, even as I applogized for spilling a little soda or whatever. Her attitude was pretty nasty. My dad was literally dying of cancer, and his care was pretty overwhelming at the end. He served honorably during the Korean War, and it was very risky for us to even be in that faciility, esp. due to his age and medical fragility. I think some people need better training, bec. they literally would not be here, if it weren't for the effiorts of our veterans and the families who support them. At least with my dad gone, I won't have to worry about going dowm there again, sadly. read more

If dealing with providers who don't listen to concerns, hang up on you, blurt out your health information in hallways, keep you waiting for hours just to get medicine, speak disrespectfully to veterans, and don't care to hear your complaints about how you've been treated is for you, please visit this VA. Very unpleasant experiences with this facility. It's a wonder how some of these providers have been given the honor to work with some of the finest soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coastguardsmen. Will definitely speak to Patient Advocate department once break is over. I can't even go to get the treatment I need until then (or even later) because every time I go people are rude as all hell. I came here three years ago with a back injury,I was X-rayed and fitted for a back brace in about 1 1/2 hours .I was very impressed compared to the hell thats at DC VA hospital, but today I have been waiting over three hours to see a dr for my foot injury and has yet to see one .In the near future I hope to never come back here again Dr and Nurses are all just huddled up talking and not helping the people that needs attention... read more

My nurse was terrible and ignored my questions the entire night, my fiancée is on my paperwork and called, they told her they couldn't help her, it took 4 hours for my next of kin to be allowed to see me after being asked by the security guard to leave, two md's figured out my problem: I've been sick for 5 months now because my Lithium level has been toxic for less than 1 month, couldn't give me any good answers or treatment except for salt water ... need I go on? I've talked to patient advocate over 6 times in the 15 years I've been in the maryland va system and they've never once helped anything. Talking to patient advocate concerning not being able to understand my doctor even resulted in another doctor who was even worse when it came to understanding them. I asked what they were hooking into my IV, they said salt solution. I asked if it was potassium cl and, annoyed, they said just salt. Potassium cl is a salt. So is CaCl. I now literally have run out of all logical treatment options. read more

Don't let this Baltimore facility and experience forever ruin the VA for you, is what I start with for those new to the VA... but holy hell, this place and service is atrocious. I received great care and assistance through other locations such as San Diego VA, or even the ft Meade facility was decent. Then transferring to this monstrosity has been abysmal. And some of the worst offenders of being responsive are literally the patient advocates. Yep, calling y'all out for how many times I've left voicemails but you don't call back, and still play the recording of not in office because of Covid haha! What a joke. You'll deal with 4+ months for a dental or vision appt. Can't get an updated PCM or appt. As someone who retired after 25 years of service and used to bureaucracy, I pray for those that only served a few years and are trying to get care here. But hey, they can be counted on for shit parking you have to pay for on the street and making sure you wear your mask on inside. read more

So much for healthcare the VA is suppose to provide to our "Hero's". My husband was suppose to have surgery on December 14,2017 to stabilize his spine. We received a call the night before and the person told him to be there at 10am. My husband and I showed up at 9:30 and checked in. I was told they would be prepping him and his surgery was scheduled for 12:00 and they want their patients there a couple hours before in case someone doesn't show up. We were still sitting at 12 pm, the Surgeon came out and said they had a emergency that the patient could be paralyzed if he didn't do it right away and that there was a chance that my husbands would be bumped up and that staffing in the OR could be short and it might have to be rescheduled. At 12:45 the surgical nurse head of the department came out and told my husband he would go back at 1:30 . My husband said I will definitely get it done today and she said yes. He was finally taken back to be prepped for surgery and all three surgeons and the Neuro Dr told me that my husband would be in the hospital for 1-5 days since it was an invasive surgery so I had to book another night at the hotel. My husband was told he was going back in a few minutes and they were just waiting for the patient that was in the OR to wake up. The Dr told him the patient was awake and my husband was ready to go.. the next thing we know the nurse was back in his room and said the surgery was cancelled because there were not enough OR assistants. We were furious ! We had sat all day long waiting for his surgery to be done. We were sitting from 9:30 thru 3:30 and my husband couldn't eat after 8 the night before and the day of surgery. We sat from 9:30 till 3:40 pm and oddly enough it also happens to be the time that employees are headed home. We traveled 2 hours from home because the type of surgery he needed done had to be done here. It's a shame that our Veterans are subjected to this kind of care. I only gave it one star because I had to in order to post this. We had talked to a lady while we were waiting for surgery and she said that this happens all the time and she also had this problem with the VA. It's sad this is what they get ! read more

Please make sure you check facility map before you go there. This was our 1st time. We had difficult time finding parking garage which is on Lafayette. The facility was very nice. We waited less than 10 minutes to be seen by orthopedic surgeon, Dr Leung. She answered all our question about upcoming surgery and feel blessed to have her for MD. We have been very happy with services at VA in Richmond, Martinsburg and Baltimore. read more

Called the VA Baltimore to talk to someone about adverse reaction to prescription, but could not get past operator #2 on 1/31/2018. He asked how he could help me and I told him I needed to talk to the person who gave me the prescription. He then began talking down to me telling me he didn't know anything about who prescribed the medication and that he didn't have access to any patient information. So here I have called the VA and the person who is supposed to help me get to the services I need berates me for what he cannot do even though he represents the interface between me and my medical services. Maybe he was having a bad day, it was only 10am, but he sent his bad day to me. Thanks a lot. Hope he is able to find a job he can do. The next operator was able to help without a need to unload on me. The only other negative is that the phone tree is misleading. read more

Vetting into the Baltimore VA after 10 years not using the VA system. From the time I stepped off elevator I was greeted with friendly and willing staff to accommodate my needs. The eligibility office was fantastic was a little issue with the system saying I was not eligible for services. Mind you I am a Combat Vet of OIF. The representative picked up the phone made a call and within a matter minutes it was resolved. Went to the 6th for OIF/OEF spoke with the counselor and had an appointment set within a week for the PC for OIF/OEF Vets. All of staff, and receptionist were great. Very informative and helpful. I can only hope come Tuesday with the PC it will be just as good. I know from personal experience that not all VA healthcare is the same. Parking was ok but they are starting construction, keep in my they do have valet parking free of charge. read more
