Then one day we drove right by Grants, made a speedy u-turn, and trundled up to see what the deal was. At the front, there was a farmer's market of sorts with pre-picked produce at a slightly higher price, but with marked convenience. We were told it works by weight, and were handed baskets for raspberries, and buckets for blueberries, so off we went! The raspberries were first, with encouragement to taste as we went. The raspberries were plentiful, juicy, sweet, and soft, just bursting with flavor. After our baskets were full, we went to the blueberry enclosure, and had a great time picking the plump, tart berries in handfuls from the forehead height bushes, just teeming with the blue gems. There was also pick your own tomatoes and strawberries, but we were so excited to get home with what we had, it was enough for us! For two completely full baskets of raspberries, and a giant bucket of blueberries, it cost us a mere $7something. It would have cost us twice that at the market for just the blueberries! Cash only but a great price, and a super fun time, I would highly recommend it. Family friendly, easy access, and a perfect way to encourage healthy local eating, Grants is the best!

We stopped by this adorable family owned farm on a mini getaway to New England in search of some…read morefall weather which wasn't happened back home yet. We set out to pick fresh floral stems and pumpkins. We were greeted with so much more....The sweet playful house pup who immediately brought us an apple for a game (or 25) of catch. He made this whole experience so much sweeter for my girls! We had a blast chasing him around the gorgeous rows of vibrant flowers and filled apple trees. We could've stayed for hours playing with him alone!! We purchased mini apple cider donuts the girls gobbled down in two seconds flat. They LOVED these! $4 for a bag of a dozen, fresh and hot off the press sugary, perfectly snack sized donuts. They also offer grass fed beef, pork and chicken. We met the owner who kindly poured us samples of their delicious fresh, raw cider and showed us the original mill which is housed in their awesome, simplistic barn. (If you're traveling, remember to bring a cooler with ice as the cider is unpasteurized.) She also suggested I purchase a "Long Island Cheese pumpkin" which I had never heard of before! Have you?! She gave me instructions on how to bake it and make what she said will be the best pumpkin pie ever! (I'll keep you posted). She also gave me some local suggestions on things to do (Old Sturbridge Village, Mass) which we did and had a fantastic time! Thank you!! Prices we thought were very fair and it feels so good supporting small, hardworking business owners. This farm is on the smaller size, but it's absolutely full of that unmistakable pure New England charm and quality goods! We would come back here in a heartbeat and had a VERY memorable, awesome first trip! If you're in the area or maybe looking for a weekend escape, this fabulous farm is located in a quaint town that offers so much, yet is so far away from it all. You won't be disappointed making an entire trip out of heading this way.

The produce and baked goods and eggs they sell are not cheap but you get what you pay for. The tomatoes are fantastic- no way you would buy one from the grocery store if you tasted these. I bought scallions and squash and lettuce and beets. The beets I just roasted and peeled and they are yummy. Take your kids do they can see a quaint family owned farm. I believe you can sleep over in the guest house, too. I attended their " Dinner on the Farm" event in August and it was spectacular- definitely go next summer if you can. It's a benefit dinner that all the food comes from either this farm or other locally sourced farms and fishermen. If you can't grow your own- go to White Gate.

As far as I know, it is not certified organic, but the prices are higher than organic at stores like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. A very small cabbage was over $4. A bunch of radishes was $5.50. A 10-oz tomato was $3.99. The prepared foods are equally pricy, and vary widely in quality. A small tub of their "schmear", a mix of dairy and scallions that I add to potato salad dressing (it works well) is $8.50. A very small (for 2) peach galette was $8.95, but delicious and perfectly baked. A berry scone ($4.50) was a heavy lump of underbaked dough, a huge difference from the light, flaky, golden scones I get from Dagmar's in Old Saybrook. A ginger-pecan scone was better. A raspberry thumbprint "cookie" fell into pieces when I placed it in my pastry box ($4.95) -- it tasted good, but the texture was more like a lump of cold oatmeal. A single slice of house pizza ($7) made me sad -- the concept was good, but the broccoli was burnt and chewy. Most of their baked goods are too heavy and underbaked. The staff is friendly, warm, and welcoming, as well they ought to be. The parking is hideous -- cramped and inadequate, with no handicapped that I could see. The actual farmstand building is small, hot, and crowded at peak times. To sum up: I think most people assume the produce is organic, but there are no signs to that effect. The refrigerated prepared foods are generally tasty. The baked goods are a crapshoot, and at the prices, it's not worth the risk of their not being worth the money.

I bought an ice cream flight, two cookies, Silver Queen corn and heirloom tomatoes. I'm primarily reviewing the ice cream side of the business, but I'm factoring the other things in as well. Ice cream is always tasty, but I'd say the ice cream was about average for CT ice cream places making their own ice cream. I ordered a flight of Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Blueberry Cheesecake and Cow Palace. The flight came in a cup, rather than some sort of flat container that would keep the flavors separate. I feel like I had a good chance to try the Chocolate Peanut Butter (which reminded me of a Fudgesicle) and the Mint CC (which was kind of standard). The flavors below the top two, kind of blended into each other by the time I got to them. I picked up some cheesecake flavor and berry flavor and chocolate chips. All good. A highlight was the two cookies (a chocolate chip and a peanut butter chip). The kind person who helped me with my ice cream said she made the cookies that morning.
