Russell's Cafe is a small independent cafe in Rochdale, located in the Wheatsheaf Centre, it is one…read moreof two of their locations, the other one also being in Greater Manchester in Bolton.
The overall setup and layout is like your typical cafe but with a twist, for example, they even have a piano at the front of the cafe as well as pictures of the owners of the restaurant with Gordan Ramsay, after they went on some sort of his catering course, however from watching Gordan's TV shows and learning his hatred (which I share) of putting photos of the food on the menu, I'm surprised they did this here.
One thing I was surprised and delighted with is that they offered a gluten-free menu, which very few (if any) cafes of this type do, options mainly include naturally gluten-free foods such as omelettes and jacket potatoes. Sadly, they were out of jacket potatoes when I visited and they didn't have any sides to go with the omelette as the chips were not gluten-free, a cheese and ham omelette would have been expensive here and came to around £5.50 with a charge of 75p per filling after the original £4 charge for a plain omelette.
For my food, I ordered two gluten-free cheese and ham toasties, the portion size was small and it was highly expensive at £4.20 each, especially for the size of the portion, gluten-free bread is normally small and expensive, but the price here was shockingly high.
The quality of the food was satisfactory at best, it was sadly one of the best things I could eat on the menu due to issues with the stock of jacket potatoes and not having any chips which would be suitable for my gluten-free diet.
The staff seemed nice enough, but not overly friendly.
I also ordered a banana milkshake, but it just tasted bleachy, foamy and wasn't very nice at all which was a shame, it was quite cheap for a fresh milkshake at £2, but still, the cheap nature is irrelevant considering the awful quality.
I came here about 3/4 of an hour before they stopped serving food, and I felt rushed because they seemed to mention and stress the fact they stopped serving food at 4 which was a shame.
With so many places shutting down it is becoming harder and harder to find a decent meal in Rochdale, the town-centre does not even have a Mcdonald's anymore which also surprised me, so based on them actually having a gluten-free menu and the location this place doesn't deserve a one star rating but issues with pricing, quality and other factors mean Russels Cafe at the Wheatsheaf sadly deserves nothing over a mid two-star rating.
