Vrooooooommmmm!!!! This was my first time at a boat drag race. Honey wasn't kidding when he said…read moreI'd be able to feel the ground rumble even though the boats were in the water. Crazy! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/hEtAe4sTl769tOxWn_CDnQ?select=Zmyjho7UUTkITxhYATYIDA We arrived around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 22nd. The qualifying was Saturday and the finals were Sunday. The entrance fee was $15 per day or $20 for both days. Parking was free. They didn't allow glass containers in the park but said we could pour our beers into plastic cups. They also let us bring in food, chairs, and our rolling ice chest. And there are quite a few shade trees to sit under for shade. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/hEtAe4sTl769tOxWn_CDnQ?select=1Ydp8p3gqGJpIb_ffwZOzg We could hear (and feel!) the teams warming up their boats. Even though it was a short race track of a quarter mile, the boats would get up to speeds of 150 mph or more. And Lake Ming doesn't really have a beach - the grass goes straight to the waters edge, so we were very close to the boats. Everyone kept telling me to never turn my back to the boats racing because they've been known to skid out of control and up onto the grass. Yikes. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/hEtAe4sTl769tOxWn_CDnQ?select=YU-MbjfMsgWCsrdW4jPAZA There were t-shirts for sale for $20 each and they let you choose the size and color and then silkscreened them right there. The food was calorific. One of our friends had a deep-fried hot dog and called it The Gut Bomb. The bomb went off on the ride home, unfortunately. I have to admit that I liked the bigger, faster, louder boats the best. My adrenaline was pumping just from watching the boats fly across the water. And the team names and boat names were funny and clever too - F-Bomb, Wake Up Call, Comfortably Numb... It was a fun new adventure!

Really cool event - These guys put on a great show. Good announcer keeps the action moving and…read moreplenty of shade trees. Bring an ice chest and plenty of snacks

Tulare Little League Park - Game time

It's rare for the youth of today to have some decent outdoor facilities. Tulare, despite needing…read moresome desperate infrastructure upgrades in general, seems to have gotten something right when it comes to this sprawling complex complete with at least six ball fields. I usually come to watch my wife's nephews. It's a great joy to see these once-little tykes grow into their bats and start knocking them toward the fences. As a spectator, you can usually find some shade beneath the trees lining the fences, but be sure to bring your own seating as the actual bleachers fill up. Here, more than most places, it seems like people come out in droves to watch the kids, which really shows some great community support. There are some improvements that can be made to the field and it can be quite distracting when the train rolls through every hour or so, but overall these kids have it made. Baseball is alive and well in Tulare.

Most of the Tulare little league park has decent fields. They finally take credit card payments at…read morethe snack bar. A majority of the scoreboards work. Parking isn't great and is particularly horrible if you have a game at the North end of the park. Lots of homeless people around. The league doesn't help coaches find decent practice spots. 2022 charge to play for 10-12 y/o was $150 for registration + $17 for your kid to get a drink/snowcone after their game + an estimated $20/$30 for an end-of-season trophy and pizza party, + each child is required to have an adult work two separate 2-hour sessions at the concession stands. Try not to deal with the board members as they are entitled pricks and pick-n-choose which rules they want to enforce. At the end of the day, my kids have fun out there playing ball with the other kids and every now and then you get some great coaches who volunteer their time.
