Folks - take this review for what it is. I am a Platinum member of the SPG group and have often stayed at the Fairmont, Four Seasons and the Ritz. Unfortunately, there is no such establishments around Cebu and as per other reviews - this place was recommended to us.
Let me document what happened during our 4 days of hell.
This place is literally in the middle of the slums and construction. It was dusty and upon seeing what we were surrounded with, we regretted ever deciding to visit Cebu.
I'm not sure what happened in the Philippines but apparently, before you arrive inside the lobby, there is security "bomb" checking your vehicle. First and foremost, the guards just look at the sides and the trunk so quickly that if there was really a bomb inside a vehicle, they would NEVER know it. How could they? It is pointless. It is a waste of time and overacting.
Upon arriving in said lobby, you're greeted by a door that doesn't have an entrance or exit signage. You're supposed to "assume" that you'll enter yet another security screening like the TSA back in the US. Again I ask - is that really necessary? I've never step foot a "5-star" hotel which I had to go through security upon entrance. And by the way, no one is really looking through said system. Sometimes, per what my family and I observed, the locals (who most frequent this place) bypasses said security protocols and would just walk away. Again, 5- star right?
After going through security, you're again supposed to guess which way is their hospitality desk aka where to check-in - because there is no SIGNAGE!
Marsha was the one who checked me in. I asked her what other hotels they're a member of - she just said: "we're worldwide." I asked okay so what other hotel chains are you affliated with... silence. Brilliant. Oh and I paid for this hotel stay via travelocity.com and she asked me if she could make a copy of the reservation. I asked her why - she said for their copy. I told her shouldn't it be in the system already? Again, silence.
Upon walking into the lobby elevators - guess what my family and I found out: there is NO elevator indicator! WTF? So you're supposed to stand in the middle of the 6 elevators and figure out which one is opened and if someone is loud in the lobby, which happened to us due to the MRS. Country pageant - we couldn't figure out which elevator dinged.
We got to the hotel floor and upon exiting out, it was like a sauna in the hotel floor! What?! We got to our room and it was nice and clean but the view was of the cultural center destroyed. Nice. The bellboy brought our luggage and I gave him $5 - which I later found out, they have a NO TIPPING policy. Yet he accepted it willingly and didn't let me know of such policy. I will get back to this later.
My dad and I went to the gym, which was decent - and so after that, I decided to shower. I was actually quite excited to shower - rainfall shower and all. So I was deprived of a hot shower so I took one. I got out, and my floor was wet. I decided to bring the AC higher thinking it'll dry. NOPE. I tried ignoring - thinking the blower and air circulation of the room will work its magic. I went over to my parent's room and out of curiosity, I asked my mom to inspect my room b/c it smelled funny. She and I walked back to my room and that's when she said it smelled like MOLD. She told me to ask for another room.
I went to the main floor to talk to a living person and by that time, I was getting short in fuse. I forgot the woman who helped me but she told me that someone will check the room and help me out. I go back up to my room and I waited... and waited... and waited... (folks, this is a 5-star hotel!) Finally, fed up and over this treatment, I called room service and after another 10 mins, someone came.
I was already irate and I guess he was overwhelmed, he told my cousin that they're still testing out the AC of the building and so the air circulation is under observation. WHAT THE HELL? So if they're still testing it out, they shouldn't be open! They shouldn't have clients staying in their establishment!
They switched me to another room, but the mold smell stayed due to LACK of air circulation and blower in the bathroom.
Facts:
* they have a NO TIPPING policy which for the amount of work, especially in the buffet department, my heart breaks. They work hard and there were moments where I really wanted to give me $5 bills just to thank them but I didn't want to jeopardize their jobs.
* employees were NOT told of no tipping policy existed before they were hired so they're blindsided.
This establishment's saving grace: their staff members!!! And they're not getting tips!
