Not that I consider myself a bookshop connoisseur as such, but I always love to check out second-hand bookshops when I travel. This is in my top 3 bookshops I've ever visited (the other two, in case you were wondering: Shakespeare & Sons, Prague, and The Last Bookstore, Los Angeles). This place had thousands of books, with that old book smell that I love. The store seems to go on forever, and there are so many nooks and crannies filled with more books! I particularly loved the old books section; we got some classics (Jane Austen, DH Lawrence, Charles Dickens and Victor Hugo) that were editions published in the early 1900s for £3-£5. My husband raided the sci-fi section while I raided the general fiction and we came up with another 9 books between us, all between 99p and £3, and all good quality. We were only able to spend 1 hour in there. It wasn't enough. I felt rushed. I needed more time! Living in London, Rochester is only 45 minutes away. I'll be back. The guy who I believe is the owner, was friendly and sweet. This is such a great find. FYI a lot of Rochester high street is filled with little independent stores, it's a really lovely place to visit! read more

If you are a book lover and do not mind the must smell of used/read books you can always burrow into the depths of the ever so many shelves at the Baggins Book Bazar. The shop really has a very vast collection of secondhand books and the prices are quite reasonable. They have books (mostly in english) from all sorts of topics and these line shelves on both the floors of the shop. The staff are friendly and help you serch for a book if you can't find it. You can order certain books or invest in greater serch but personally I think the price of such a serch is rather high and I would rather spend time online on ebay or Amazon to get it at half the cost. read more

The first thing I can say about this place is that - it is huge. I think it may actually be one of the largest second hand book stores in the country - or at least I remember seeing that advertised there. Its an original book store, very much not in the same vein as all the the more clinical well known brands such as Waterstones. It is very in fitting with the fact that it is a second hand store. You can find it along Rochester high street (more towards the Strood end) opposite the cathedral. They seem to specialise in natural history and books about the area, however this is not to say that they dont have a huge array of books on other subjects. The staff are very helpful - I had trouble trying to find a particular book and they were great at trying to help me source it. read more
