Cousin D & I ended up @ Bagel Shop because:
A. It was open on a Sunday, when most other food places/businesses in the neighborhood (Cadet) were closed
B. I'm a fan of "Shabby Chic" design
C. We had just flown in from Barcelona, & D was hungry
D. We were unfamiliar with the neighborhood & were unsure of the proximity of the next open food place
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon & 2 girls sat outside Bagel Shop, smoking & talking. D & I walked right in & went over the menu. She ordered a bagel, & I got a brownie....still not sure why I ordered a brownie from a place called Bagel Shop. I was maybe feeling rebellious, or already ate lunch, or it didn't register that it said "Bagel Shop" out front.
We never really talked about D's bagel. While she didn't have any complaints, I also think that if her bagel had been spectacular, she would've said so. I thought my brownie was just "OK" (this is the part where I try to stop myself from comparing food from 'X' Paris food place to Ladurée), & tasted like any brownie. I remember doing some mental currency conversions & thinking it was a bit expensive (it's Paris, after all), for something that was nothing special. Our server was a young woman that turned out to be very nice. She said "yes" when I asked, Parlez-vous Anglais? This is a relief for folks like us that don't speak French.
Under similar circumstances, I'd probably drop by this Cadet Bagel Shop again. Maybe next time I'll have enough sense to order a bagel, because I actually really love them - plain, sesame, any savory flavor, what have you. Just not a sweet one like blueberry or cinnamon raisin because against any random dessert, a sweet bagel is a sorry bagel. Thing is, if you're craving something sweet with a hole in the middle, you're better off eating a doughnut.
This Bagel Shop is quaint & is worth checking out if you're in the mood for bagels, don't mind spending a bit for a bagel & a "boisson" ("it means drink", a nice French lady told me) & happen to be in the neighborhood. read more
