They seem to have scaled back in their remaining stores, including this one, going back to the basics of coffee and cake, with good service, which is what they seem to do best. Sadly, this seems to mean scaling back and removing most gluten-free options. Sandwiches and Afternoon Tea options are also available. The male staff member working on my most recent visit was very friendly, although the members of my party did mention they found the coffee to be too strong. Prices were reasonable and in line with most other chains in the area. The interior seemed small but comfortable, and they did have around 2-3 tables outside It wouldn't be somewhere I'd return to, but a useful business to have in Leeds city centre, and I hope things do turn around for them as it would be sad for them to have to shut more branches. 3*

The food menu seems to have grown since we were last in. Bit pricey for cake and coffee but the cooked food prices seem good value. Will have to try that next time.

I'd heard a lot of good things about Bagel Nash, so myself and Friend decided to explore. Actually…read moreFriend was one of those people I'd heard good things from, so I decided to say 'aye' when she suggested we go there for mid-shopping replenishment lunch. Tucked away neatly in the Thorntons Arcade, it's almost hard to notice, save from the midday hubbub and rush that leaks out of the place. Staff were super friendly, nice greetings, got a little impatient with me when I couldn't decide which overpriced bagel I wanted, but hey I'll let it slide, I mean 4 quid for a bagel, it's a sandwich with the hole missing for Pete's sake, half the filling oozes outta the damn hole. Anyway, after a steady stream of pondering I decided a bagel wasn't for me, and opted for a chicken panini, I was told to go fetch it from the fridge, hmmm, and so friend and I made purchase of our food, her's was a cream cheese bagel without cucumber and chives £2.50, now I might sound like a tightarse, but £2.50 for a bagel with some Philly on it? I pulled a fruit juice outta the fridge and friend got a coffee, it was either just shy or just over a tenner for a bagel a sarnie, a bottle of pop and a coffee. We were told food would be brought over. Friend's bagel was instant, mine took about 10-15 minutes to arrive, despite ordering way after the dinner time rush. When it did land in front of me it was piping hot, score, but the taste was none. Not second to none, but plain none, nothing there, nada, it was the beige-ist thing I'd ever eaten. Ok never sit near the magazine rack in this Bagel Nash, instead of waiting for us to finish our food, a member of staff thought it would be ok with me if she leant over and grabbed a mag, armpit and panini, nice! Another bod, think it was delivery or some sort, decided he wanted to put stuff in the rack, again not waiting for us to get up and leave, or leave a stack with the staff so they could put it up, but once again leant over me to put stuff in the rack, and obviously with the jaunty angle he attempted to stack, it didn't lead to stability, and then the whole ruddy thing fell on me and into my lap. Taaa daaaah. As funny as this was to female member of staff behind till, I wasn't feeling particularly amused at this point, and barked a nice 'back off' at stupid man with stacking intentions. Surprisingly he did. Overpriced for what it is in my opinion, and when you do actually pay inflated prices, you expect quality or taste at least, clutching at straws you'd think staff and atmosphere would play a part in positive experiences, but aside form small moments, of this there was none. I wasn't impressed at all. Nope.

Not the kind of dirt which builds up over a busy days trade, but the sign of neglect. I expect behind the counter to be messy if they have had a busy day but everywhere you look - it's properly dirty. Even the leather wipe clean cushions in the window were very dirty. When we arrived all the tables barring one needed to be cleared. They were still needing to be cleared 15 mins later when we left and they were not busy. The staff either need a good kick up the bum or the owner needs to get a cleaner.

It's stalls like this that make a wander through the market such an enjoyable experience as you get a real sense of the history and character of the place. The stall has a traditional bakery counter displaying bread rolls and tasty looking cakes - I'd definitely spend my pennies here rather than at the Greggs in the lower section of the market (rather cheeky I feel - opening a chain store, of which there are already more than ten in Leeds, in a market populated by independent retailers, many just getting by. And I'm sad to see market customers queuing in droves to get their Greggs pastry fix when they could support an independent bakery selling very affordable sandwiches and other baked goods a short walk away. Bracketed rant over. ) They also have a range of pre-packaged brand name bread - a little odd when they bake their own. Their cake making display is a real treat to browse, with many a creatively-iced cake that any kid would be overjoyed to see candle-lit on their birthday. They also make wedding cakes with three working days notice. Great for a spontaneous wedding party, couples who haven't been particularly organised or when previous wedding-cake plans fall through. As Amelia mentioned, they offer egg-free cakes, but do they do vegan? As they have considered those who don't eat egg I think it likely they could stretch to include vegans...so it'd be worth asking if you're looking for a vegan cake-making service.

All cakes have to be ordered but can be made within three working days - pretty good if you consider the quality of decoration. There's a sign saying that all cakes can be made eggless if required but does this mean they can also be made vegan? I'm not sure. The plastic-covered Warbotun loaves seem strangely placed next to these and the floury baps and loaves also on offer but I guess that's what you find in a market like this - peculiar variety.
