Octopus Garden is radiating with positive vibe. When we checking in the front staffs were super nice and friendly. This is the first time we visited the studio wanting to use our passport to prana but we were advised that the first class is FREE!! and we are more than welcome to come back to use our passport again for another complimentary class! Sweet The Restorative Class was at the maximum capacity on this Sunday afternoon. Mat to Mat and don't even think about personal space...but since it is a restorative class and most of the poses are passive so it was ok. Tons of props: blankets, cushions, straps, blocks, eye pillows... and ACUBALLS!! This is the only yoga studio I experienced the Acuball (http://www.acuball.com/)..and it feels so good and relaxing especially on this cold winter day! I was snoring as usual...Zzzzz Zzzzz.. it was that relaxing! The change room though small, with 2 washrooms with no showers.. but is bright and tastefully decorated. Since there are not lockers, students are encouraged to bring their valuable into class. Teaming with Urban Herbivore providing Vegan and healthy food choices for yogi, Octopus Garden really become more than a yoga studio but becomes a complete lifestyle experience!

In my opinion the best quality of yoga instruction anywhere in Toronto…read more The studio has been in operation for more than 30 years, and it hums along like a well oiled machine. The senior teacher is Marlene Mawhinney who was recently described by Sweat Equity magazine as "a national treasure". And deservedly so. The studio teaches Iyengar style yoga, a classical style which focuses upon rigorous alignment and great attention to detail. Iyengar teachers are among the best trained yoga teachers, and the Iyenger style is widely respected by its various peer groups yoga styles. BKS Iyengar himself is still alive at age 93, and continues to practice yoga every day at his home studio/retreat in Pune, India. The studio (and Iyengar yoga in general) doesn't indulge in much of the artsie new age elements of yoga. There will be no incense or drum circles here. Just great quality yoga instruction. They also have various programs for those with specific needs, (back problems, heart problems, etc), and they take a very principled approach towards their responsibility towards those who have physical limitations or ailments. I've been attending classes here off and on for 15 years, although not as frequently as i would like recently, as I live further away. Highly Recommended.

It also helped that this studio was recommended to me by people in Calgary who had been here and had taken classes from the owner/teacher (Marlene M). If people know of your studio provinces away, than it must be pretty good. This studio is very clean and just the right amount of space to not be overwhelming. When I arrived, the front desk person was very friendly and helpful answering my questions and helping me get set up with a pass. Some studios feel intimidating when you enter them, not this one. I felt welcomed and comfortable. I attended a number of classes with a few different teachers who all seemed to be well trained and had a great rapport with students. I felt a sense of community and was pleased when I would see teachers chatting with students after class and answering questions. Also, the prices for drop-ins and such seem to be on par with other studios around. After some time, I noticed this studio had programs for different ailments, such as the Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis and Cardiac Program. I don't know much about them as I didn't inquire, but I think it's great classes like this are being offered. I have since moved away from Toronto, but visit frequently, so when I'm in town I like to stop by here for a refreshing class in my favourite style of yoga.

I have never practiced kundalini yoga before, so this was a great treat to an early morning. The pictures from the site reflected the space, it was tidy, and clean. The studio had yoga mats, blankets, and pillows for participants to use for free. Shivalee was the instructor for my class, she was very descriptive in all the moves and it was a very smooth transition from one move to another. The class itself was an hour and a half. The location is very accessible by the spadina streetcar and it is walkable from the spadina subway station (about a 10 minute walk). Although I had a great time, this type of yoga is definitely not for me, but when I do purchase the passport to prana again next year, I will make sure to come back again.

Feeling very urban and brave for having slept at my boyfriend's condo in Toronto's West End, I…read morechose this morning to venture further out of my comfort level and actually tried a different yoga studio. Now, there is a marked difference between the people living in midtown Toronto (myself not included since I am a Winnipeg girl at heart) and those living in the West End; that is, the denizens of midtown make lots of money, prance around in designer clothing and flashy sports-cars and probably live outside their means, whereas West-enders have recently begun to earn money, walk around looking like paupers, and probably live beneath their means. Now what does this have to do with yoga? Well being from the midtown, I was afraid the West End Yogis would smell the stink of St. Clair on me and resent my presence. But Yoga Space is a relaxing environment, with friendly staff and a very yogi clientele. Everyone is welcoming, or at least leaves you alone. For the most part, the instructors are good, but the classes are often taught by students since it is a yoga school as well. The best part about Yoga Space though are the calming efforts the teachers make to relax you into your final pose -- Savasana -. Each end to the class is different, anything from bean-bags on your eyes to a foot rub to a eucalyptus scented blanket is used to let you close your practise in complete comfort. Yogi or not, one thing is certain, no Good Life gym under the Sun would offer you that kind of treatment at the end of a workout.
