Why 4 stars? Because they have many types of cupcakes and I want all of them. --- --- --- I've been driving by Babycakes a bit more than usual lately and I continue to say to myself that I need to pop in one day. And it's hard to keep me away from a good cupcake for long, so this fantasy was recently made into a reality. The thing that stands out to me right away is that these cupcakes are a bit larger than you'll find at some other places. I think it's because many (or all?) of them have some sort of cream filling, so they need to be bigger to have the room to house that goodness. We tried three of them and they were all quite tasty. The only wish I would have had is that the salted caramel could have been a bit heavier on the salt. But, it was still enjoyable. The Cookie Monster was also solid, but the Big Cheese was the best: it was some sort of chocolate with cheesecake filling and some other random goodies. After sharing three cupcakes with my wife and son, my blood sugar immediately skyrocketed to borderline unsafe levels, but that's probably more of a referendum on my age than the cupcakes themselves. I miss my younger days when I could basically eat an entire bag of sugar with no repercussions. For me, the best cupcakes in the area still come from Crave, but Babycakes is certainly not a bad option at all. They are markedly better here than from Smallcakes. And I don't think there's a single flavor I wouldn't be interested in trying during future visits. read more

There's one fatal flaw keeping this from being 5 stars in my opinion. I tried 2 different cupcakes here with 2 different verdicts. Was recommended to try this place months ago by some friends. Finally had a chance to check it out while in the area & had some time to burn. I got 3 cupcakes yesterday, the Pumpkin Pie, the Hepburn & the Lisa Marie. I ate the Pumpkin Pie yesterday while saving the Lisa Marie for myself & the Hepburn for my wife today. I thought it was amazing! The cupcake itself was perfectly moist, balanced sweetness and flavorful. The pumpkin pie filling was a nice complement. Good amount of frosting; perhaps slightly too much in the middle but not enough to ruin the experience. Fast forward to today, I had the Lisa Marie. I'll start with the good; the cupcake itself was moist, balanced sweet and good, like the pumpkin pie. However, here's the bad in my opinion: WAY TOO MUCH frosting! When I bought it, I saw that the frosting was stacked high but I thought something was under the frosting, on top of the cupcake; like more cake or filling. But the entire top was ALL frosting. I had to eat through mouthfuls of frosting before I even got to the cupcake; very distasteful to me. I HATE cupcakes that are more frosting than cake, the one fatal flaw of half of their cupcakes. I couldn't even grab it to snap a pic without messing it up for the pic yesterday. I didn't try the Hepburn but my wife said hers had too much frosting too while the cupcake itself was good. If I had the Lisa Marie alone, this would've been a 2 or 3-star review but I consider the Pumpkin Pie an easy 5-Star which balances out to 4 stars. If they learn how to go easy on the frosting, I could easily consider this a 5-star recommendation. read more

There's also regulars made for those who found something they loved and stuck with it. The jalapeño sausage kolaches are good too - usually get one as a driving home snack. {it's a nearly 30 min one way drive I happily make} It's especially awesome when you catch a buy two get two free special. And while I LOVE this deal I am glad it's not all the time because we'd probably only eat jumbo stuffed cupcakes in my house. Stopped by after going to B52 brewery on our hour long drive back to Houston and was not disappointed! We had a vanilla latte and a Cookie Monster cupcake and they were both fantastic. I sometimes debate getting a flavored latte since I'm not a fan of too sugary coffee but this one was just right.
