The mining pumps are amazing to see from the beginning of the era to the modern industrial era. I enjoyed learning about diatoms, the Permian Basin, shooters, and the difference between fracking and drilling. There are many classic race cars on display, and fun games to reinforce learning. I did not know that the U.S. produces the most oil in the world. I also did not know that Midland is the birthplace of petroleum and natural gas as well as the largest oil field in the U.S. The museum also has art on display. The restrooms are clean, the museum is bright and colorful, and staff are friendly. The museum is also kid friendly. Check it out!

Honestly, I do wish we could have spent more time here because there's so many different sections and the displays are beautiful and full of information that people of all ages will enjoy. While there's obviously a heavy lean to only discuss the pros of oil and gas and the extraction of these resources (and sometimes the propaganda is painfully obvious), the detailed information in the different sections still makes it highly educational and we were very impressed by how many interactive displays there were. If you have any kids with you (or you're a kid at heart) make sure to go on the "ride" near the middle of the museum where you get to pretend you're on a flying ship to steal resources from the ocean and other countries. It's wild but very entertaining to press the touch screens and experience their little story! Just don't focus too hard on how you're shooting a laser into the ground of an independent, populated country to "claim" resources lol The best part of the entire museum for us was actually the mineral exhibit. Absolutely breathtaking samples from across Texas and around the world, and as big rock nerds we would have willingly spent a whole half hour just walking through the gorgeous room and looking at all the displays. Don't miss it! There's also beautiful art in this area, and that hallway winds around to the exhibit on race cars, which was a very fun way to end our tour of the museum. I'd recommend at least 1.5 hours to see everything, but you could probably spend more time just having fun and enjoying the interactive displays! A great museum that captures the history of oil and gas that built up this area of Texas, and so much of Texas' economy in general. Worth a stop for sure!

It was a great way to spend a little less than an hour before lunch. There was nothing political about it and our tour guide (Kaylee?) was excellent and knew so many of the facts we asked her (she had also given us fantastic suggestions on where to eat and what else to do nearby). We walked through restored areas of a living room, kitchen, nursery, George W's childhood bedroom, bathroom, photos of the family, a history of Midland, a baseball room, and a recreated outside area. We received a tour as a homeschool group. The lady who showed us around (I cannot remember her name…read morenow) was fantastic! She knew the history well and made the tour a real treat. Some of the furniture pieces used to stage the house were real elegant and fun to see. They have an original bedroom set to the White family made of wood, in pristine condition, incredible! The rotary phone actually works and my child was able to make a local call on it. The house sits on the highest natural point in Odessa and grows pretty much anything they want to plant. The house has suffered some vandalism and made me long for simple days of the past where people had work to do and didn't go around cutting up other peoples trees and damaging property. All in all I loved this field trip offered to us and highly recommend going if you can. I know the city doesn't want much to do with this historical site, which is a real shame. If the city became involved this historical site might be here for future generations of people. I know they are struggling to keep it as it is. It's a real gem.

They did a great job recreating it (at a smaller scale, of course) but it's still amazing to see up close, and you're allowed to walk through the pillars here, whereas in the UK you can't get anywhere near the actual Stonehenge pillars. We were on a road trip and when I heard about this place, I knew we had to swing by and experience it for ourselves. It was only about 15 minutes out of the car, but when you're driving across the massive emptiness of West Texas, every cool stop is worth the chance to stretch your legs. The old CAF headquarters building is closed and is not being maintained by anyone because the city of Midland has taken over it. The hanger has many planes in it including an AT11 that was stationed at the airfield during WWII and Fast Eagle 102 which is an F14 and is the first F14 to shut down an enemy aircraft.

Members have free admission at the Western Heritage Museum at the New Mexico Junior College. Please, someone, encourage the NMJC to put out a remembrance bulletin board of our beloved Dr. Steve McCleery ASAP. I am disheartened that nothing was displayed anywhere on-campus on 4.6.2025 when my daughters and I visited and again when I walked my brother's dogs on 4.8.2025.
