I kind of pledged to take a break in between writing a review of this radio station and the last one, because I don't know if my stomach can take it. (There's so much bad music out there if you're looking for it; writing about it isn't as bad as listening to it, but it's getting there.) I figure a cup of coffee outside in a relaxing environment should help me get into a more objective frame of mind when reviewing B105.
Nope, I'm back from my coffee break and B105 still sucks. I think. The Brisbane summer sun has kind of fried my brain and vision, and everywhere I look inside is obscured by a bright light on my retinas... or so it feels. Then again, I would prefer this feeling than having to listen to the DJs talk on B105 at any given time of day.
I don't want to come across as some massive music snob. I'm not. I'd probably quietly rock out to Destiny's Child if I was by myself in the car. My main issues with radio stations in general (exemplified by B105) is the excessive unfunny jostling between the DJs, the constant advertisements and the apparent desire to play one song over and over in spite of "no repeat" scheduling promises. (When Rihanna first hit it big, I can see the B105 guys and radio DJs all over the world gleefully scrambling to organize each day into three separate ones so they can play "Umbrella" thrice in one day without breaking any in-house rule.)
With radio stations, the vibe of the website best sums up the target audience. B105's website prominently features an On Air Now section, with the current track being Galaxy by Jessica Mauboy. This indicates that B105 is a) a kiddie-friendly pop music station and b) is upfront about it. (Indeed, all of the daytime music is in the kiddie-friendly pop genre; night time is just plain pop genre for the most part.)
B105 still has its eye on pulp culture, with entertainment reporters on the radio and stories on celebrity happenings on its website. It kind of makes me think that B105 is to radio what NW is to magazines. read more
