I have been working with Laura for about six months now, meeting weekly. I couldn't be happier with…read morehow my treatment is going. When I first called her for a phone introduction and assessment I had two specific things I wanted to address: some private issues and a very unhealthy dose of low self-esteem, in addition to the certainty I wouldn't last in treatment because I've always had a hard time sticking around therapy. Fast forward six months and I count the days to my next appointment with her, I feel confident and mentally stronger, and I've learned amazing techniques to cope with my main underlying issue. It's work in progress but she makes me never want to stop working on myself. What I love about Laura's approach (and mind you I've worked with at least 5 therapists along life so I've experienced all sorts of personalities and techniques ) is how she challenges my pre-conceived negative and unhealthy beliefs about myself and situations. In a way that ALWAYS sends me home thinking "mmmm for 36 years I've believed this to be the absolute truth but maybe it's not". She pokes my thoughts. And I absolutely love it. When I run out of words (which is rare), Laura comes in and fills in the gap with teaching and compassion. I have never felt judged and I have never felt like she was telling me what to do. Her opinions come only if I ask for them, which in all those years in therapy, I've found to be quite rare. She's compassionate and I have this strong sense she genuinely wants to help. I recommend Laura to everyone looking for emotional support and guidance in the madness called life.

That said, as skilled as she is in numerous areas, she does have a particularly strong knowledge of medications used in the mental health field. Just as important as her knowledge and experience is her genuine compassion, warmth, understanding and ability to truly engage with patients. Kim is that rare combination of casual and professional- this she is able to make one feel at ease when discussing even the most awkward of subjects by creating a comfortable and relaxed setting, whilst at the same time fostering a true sense of security and confidence with her sense of professionalism. There are only a couple of medical professionals I would recommend so highly, and amongst those none quite so emphatically as Kim.

I've been struggling with debilitating mental health issues for a year now and was ready to take control of my life. After I called the office the woman who answered me was very dismissive and patronizing towards me. I generally understand how my health insurance plan works but I still wanted to verify the details. Every time I've gone to a doctor's office I was told the amount I'd have to pay upfront before I schedule and am able to see the doctor. The woman told me they don't do that (verifying insurance details) and to call back when I figure it out and was quite eager to get me off the phone, treating me as if I had asked her something completely absurd, irrational, and uncommon. I was only referring to the amount I needed to get in the door, I can handle any bills sent to my address at a later time, I just needed to budget everything so I could seek treatment. I understand that doctors and other medical staff deal with a lot of patient abuse and harassment and I'm empathetic to the fact that it's not an easy trade to be in, hence why I haven't and still never disrespect, argue with, or harass healthcare workers, but regardless--when dealing with mentally ill individuals in a health care setting there has to be a level of empathy when communicating and treating them, especially because a good portion of patients seeking psychiatric treatment have a history of being bullied, abused, neglected, and/or experienced psychological abuse at one point in their lives--if not their entire lives. Her snarky tone towards me as well as her eluding to me being unreasonable and unintelligent by asking about insurance details and upfront payment felt like a 3 minute humiliation ritual.

She's helped me heal and learn tools that have made a difference in my career, my relationships, and how I feel day to day. I feel more confident, more capable, and genuinely at peace. If you're looking for a therapist who's highly skilled, truly cares, genuinely herself, and who will respectfully and supportively encourage you to grow, Dr. Burruel is it. I've been working with various therapists for the last 3+ years and while I've had several really great ones - Dr. Burruel's expertise, honesty, and genuine compassion is unmatched. I originally started therapy because I had no one else to talk to about deep or important things, but have stayed over the years for much more. In the last year I've been able to talk through major career changes and plans, relationship struggles, mindset changes, healthier and happier life choices, and honestly sometimes just to vent and talk to a highly educated person who is an excellent listener. I've never felt judged, uncomfortable, or pushed in any direction. Lastly, another very important variable for me is the quality of the admin work - or the people/team responsible for billing, questions, and general communication between sessions. Golda and the team at Achieve Counseling and Wellness are the gold standard! Golda has always been very helpful, responsive, and has done everything for me from rescheduling, fighting billing with insurance companies, and answering any questions I have. I've left a lot of great providers because of the incompetency of the support staff - that is certainly not the case here. If you're new to therapy, I can't think of a more safe and welcoming place to start. If you're not new, stop wasting your time and switch to the hardest working, most thoughtful, and well organized professional in the state of AZ!
