I had a great experience working with Matt at Axeman Guitar. Realizing how short life can be, I am unquestionably having my mid-life crisis at 50 years old. Not having played for over 30 years, I bought an ESP Kirk Hammet KH-602 and an ESP James Hetfield Iron Cross and a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier. I couldn't decide between the guitars, so I got both! I play a fairly broad set of styles (60s rock all the way to occasional death metal) so I asked Matt to set up my tele with action that would suit both standard and drop tunings as best he could (using 10 gauge strings). I figured going in that neither would feel quite as nice as my initial factory setup in E standard but it would be a good compromise. But he had enough high quality equipment that people dropped off and he was very laid back so any unease was put to rest. I haven't played guitar since before Covid due to health issues and other reasons. My guitars have sat inside their cases for the last 4/5 years unplayed with the strings on tight pulling in the truss rod. Anyhow I needed my Acoustic (Yamaha CPX-15W) and Electric (Ravelle Deluxe) restrung, setup, and cleaned up. Every guitarist can relate to the daunting task of seeking out a reputable shop to handle their instrument for set-up or repair. Even more so when it's your main Axe. Do you spend $90-$120 at the big shops? Do you use your due diligence and research local shops all night like I did? I'm more than comfortable doing my own setups to some degree, truss rod work, action adjustment, intonation, resoldering a pot here and there. But when it comes to my mains' I go to an expert, a true craftsman.
