Is it possible to be a produce nerd? I'm not a vegetarian, though I do love my fresh fruit and vegetables, and I do get pretty excited when faced with rows, bales, and baskets of tomatoes, carrots, and pears (oh my!), and other glistening and/or juicy and/or just plain delicious foods. Oh well, there are worse addictions to have. At least this one will help me keep my girlish figure...
Avery's is my favourite place to shop for local produce, with the possible exception of the Brewery Market downtown. Their wares are always fresh and tasty (significantly more so than at one of the chain grocery stores I would say, but maybe I'm a produce snob too...) and they provide a great deal of variety. Prices tend to be fairly inexpensive too.
Aside from the fruits and veggies, they also sell many other items. Their homemade fudge and baking are excellent (though not so good for the girlish figure...). As well, they offer a selection of snack foods, such as nuts and candies, which they package themselves, and an ice cream counter during the lazy days of Summer, when you need a scoop of something cold and sweet to cool you down. Also available are gardening supplies and a few rows of items you would find at a typical convenience store (cans of soup, toilet paper, over the counter pain medication, etc.). They even have a freezer with your basic kinds of meat and some frozen berries.
Oh, and they rent movies, if you want something to watch while you munch on your homemade fudge and ice cream...I mean carrots and broccoli and other healthy treats... read more
