Fine Italian dining at its best! And yes, in Berlin…read more I enjoyed a late lunch here. I had walked past the restaurant on numerous occasions in the evenings when it is rather crowded. They offer seating both outdoors and indoors. I opted to dine outdoors. Nice atmosphere. The waiter spoke German, Italian, and English. He was professional and efficient. Complimentary warm, fresh bread and olives were served first. I ordered a Latte Macchiato and the Spaghetti Aglio Olio. The spaghetti was perfectly cooked, al dente. It was simple, not loaded with many ingredients, just garlic, roasted red peppers, Parmesan, and olive oil. Delicious. Reminiscing makes my mouth water. It was a pleasant expensive.

The restaurant sits along a busy street near The Gate. Atmosphere is nice enough...comfortable seating inside and out under awnings, crisp white table cloths, Italian wait staff straight out of "Central Casting Roma" who charm with Italian greetings and banter. But the good times end there. While menus were brought to our table immediately, taking our order took some time and a few hand gestures to make happen. Food, a pizza and some pasta for my friend, were bland and mediocre at best. Have feeling the orders sat a bit before being delivered as they were lukewarm upon arrival. The pizza was undercooked, under-sauced, and rather boring overall. Pasta was reported to be the same. When it was to go it took three asks to settle the bill. Our charming waiter politely suggested our tip was insufficient (it wasn't), and I left feeling much more like I'd been hoodwinked into dining at a tourist trap vs. having an enjoyable experience. I'm clearly in the minority compared to other recent reviews. Maybe it was just an off-night. But I travel to Berlin enough to know there are some really good small independent places to find great Italian food. This place is not one of them. Diners beware.

I asked the waitress to change it to Pizza Margarita bit this one tasted worse than a supermarket frozen pizza. The price range is 10 to 20 euro. The service though was good. Obviously local Berliners and savvy tourists avoid this place. Bad service. This was the main problem. We sat down and the server quickly brought us their dinner menus. Not a problem if it was 8pm, but a little too early for lunchtime! We asked him about lunch menus, and the look on his face was priceless. Obviously they don't like people to order from their lunch menus during lunch! After some back and forth, we finally got the lunch menu. We quickly decided on what we wanted, but the waiter disappeared for 10 minutes... This is Berlin, so not an abnormal thing. When he came back, we ordered and everything seemed okay. Cappuccino + Pizza. I almost fell out of my chair when the waiter brought my pizza and cappuccino together. If he thought I was thirsty, maybe he should have asked if I wanted a drink? I'm wondering if this is a normal thing at this restaurant... Don't ask for spicy oil! I was still reeling from the surprise of the pizza cappuccino when I tried to order some spicy oil for my pizza. The waiter argued with us that the pizza was already spicy enough and did not need anything else. After some more back and forth, he grudgingly brought some spicy oil! Don't ask for water! In the middle of all this chaos, I tried to order some sparkling water. This was the breaking point! The waiter said he didn't have time for all of our questions and that we were not the only customers in the restaurant and stomped off!!! New waitress saves the day! After our waiter's meltdown, he disappeared and we suddenly had a waitress who was friendly and responsive. The rest of the meal was uneventful, exactly how I expect lunch at an Italian restaurant to be! Average food. Don't come to this restaurant if you're a foodie. It was bland, but that's completely expected for any restaurant in the middle of a tourist zone. I do have to say the cappuccino tasted good, but I don't recommend drinking it with your pizza! Nothing special. The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice (besides waiters who have temper tantrums!) and has a faux-posh feel to it. I recommend you sit in the terrace in the back. It's nice on a warm day and is next to a small pond. That's it. If you're looking for some excitement during your lunch, give this place a try. But if you're looking for a quiet meal with friendly service, go somewhere else!
